Nail salons are to women pretty much what a massage parlor is to men.
Except at the end the women get waxed before they get off.

Kinda funny really. Women love getting their feet messed with as long as there's no sex afterwards. As a card-carrying foot freak, I feel discriminated by this.

I'm a female and I can never really get into the mani-pedi thing. When I walk past them in the mall the smell kind of gags me. Is that really safe? I feel like they should open a window but they don't have any.

/needless to say, my nails look horrible

The smell is horrible, as is the being held hostage for an hour plus. I can hardly bear that much human contact. I like my hands and feet to be well-groomed, but it's not that difficult to do myself. Actually I do a better job on my hands than they could do. Without being talked about in a foreign language.

As a male, I should point out that the phrase "wow did you see the beautiful nails on that chick?" has never come out of a guy's mouth.

On the other hand, no pun intended, I have remarked as to how over the top gawdy, a females nails are. Not to mention high maintence and how costly the chick must be.

Nope, but I can guarantee there has been a reference or two of gnarly feet. One of the things that attracted me to Mr. MMM was his well-manicured hands although he works in a service industry using primarily his hands. He has gorgeous manly hands. But I digress ... I cant imagine anyone thinking calluses and snaggly nails are sexy.

Anyone who doesn't understand the joys of a good pedicure is obviously some kind of communist. How is it not delightful to sit in a massage chair and have an Asian woman kneel before you and give your feet a jacuzzi bath, a soothing massage, and a thorough grooming? I always feel like a shameless capitalist imperialist pig-dog when I do it. In fact, I had a pedicure this afternoon, and I haven't felt so oppressive in years.

Men don't know what they're missing.

/As for TB, my dad's father died of it. He always tested positive for it but never had symptoms and wasn't contagious. My mom, brother, and I all test negative. It's really not that uncommon.
//A proper nail salon autoclaves the instruments between uses. It's just like getting a tattoo -- if you don't ask about their hygiene practices, you're an idiot.

Oh god, don't get me started. My last boyfriend said he didn't have to cut his toenails "because they break off cleanly."

I get pedicures because they're pleasant and I get a kick out of knowing that under my big stompy boots, my toenails are colorful and sparkly. It's something I do 100% for my own pleasure, and no one else's.

I'm as gay as they come.  I find over made up guys to be a major turn off.  Manicures, pedicures, waxing, shaved bodies, fake tans, make-up -- leave it for the drag queens.  I'm not saying I like slobs and that men should be slobs, but when a guy puts too much time and effort into his "look", it comes across as desperate, vain and/or someone trying to make up for deficiencies in other areas.

Wait a minute - aren't most of us vaccinated for TB in the first place? At least in the United States? But then I know about the anti-vaxers and then I understand.

Awesome.

Ladies, if you are in a relationship with another woman where she pours hot wax on your genitalia and then rips out your pubic hair you aren't at a salon, you're paying to be the bottom in an S&M situation.  But your nails look so pretty.  And no straight man is looking at your freaking nails.

There's no vaccine. You're normally tested during school physicals, when they sign off on your vaccine record, too, so that's probably the source of the confusion.

They prick you, circle the spot, and then either make you come back in a few days or give you a postcard with pictures where you mark your reaction and drop it in the mail.

Vaccine.

Not common in US, though

This.
Maybe I'm missing something, but if it's not contagious, how did the clients get it, or is that the point?

As others have said...yes, there is a vaccine but no, it's rarely used in the United States. I suspect the reason is threefold. First, a successful TB inoculation will leave a scar somewhere between the size of a pencil eraser and a dime. Second, you absolutely cannot pick on the scab, wash it, etc. It requires a bit of care and I don't know that folks are up for that sort of thing. And third, once you are vaccinated for TB, you run the risk of giving a false positive on the skin scratch test. I can't imagine the nightmare that would present of health authorities.

Why are those not deterrents in Europe? Because of open borders. The bar for travel is much lower. You can get infected people from a poorer or low-compliance country randomly popping up as workers or tourists and then have a bit of a crisis. Especially with the multi-drug-resistant strains that are showing up.

What you're smelling is the acrylic resin used to adhere the artificial nails to the nail bed. Pedicures don't generally utilize that material.

Don't they also use acetone in some procedures?  removing old nail polish or something?

I love good calluses on a man's hands. I grew up in the country and had them myself all the time as a kid, and still get them when summer comes around and I'm working outside in the yard. It's a sign he's not afraid of hard labor, can fix and/or build things himself, and knows how to handle his tools. Don't get me wrong--clean and well-kept hands are a must, but a little bit of character on them never hurt. I tend to date a lot of engineers; to find an engineer with brains AND well-used hands is the jackpot.
