It'll all be okay everybody. Just like everybody before him, Ben Affleck was cast because he has the chin for the role.

Think about it. Did Michael Keaton convince you that he was a millionaire? Hell no. But he pulled off wearing the batsuit because of dat chin.

So you're saying "Relax, don't worry, he'll probably commit suicide over this," submitter?

Affleck is a very solid actor/filmaker.  He pursued a strategy of taking big paydays making shiat movies to finance the lower budget projects he really liked.  The unintended consequence was that it ruined his reputation.  He went away for a while then directed three (and starred in two) really good to great movies.  While I loved Nolan and Bale's take on Batman, that's hardly the only approach that could work.

This is totally different because we're right this time!!!!!!111

Again, the only solution to ensure everyone loves his take on Batman is to kill him before the release.

/Will this be the 3rd greenlight saying the exact same thing?

Well, since I hated that whole Batman series, maybe this'll be good.

Well, with classic comic book adaptations like daredevil under his belt, how could they go wrong in choosing him?

Fear not Affleck, here are seven unpopular casting decisions that worked out well

Heath Ledger -
The Joker Fans quickly forgot their 'In Nolan we trust' mantra when the director announced his decision to make Heath Ledger his Joker. Cue Brokeback Mountain gags as numerous as they were lame and poorly spelled complaints about how this would ruin Batman forever. Of course, Ledger's performance, which he didn't live to see, was not only the highlight of Nolan's trilogy but the only performance in a superhero movie ever to win an Oscar. After that, suddenly everyone remembered thinking it was a good idea all along.

Why the internet just needs to calm down and reserve judgement

Then there's Heath Ledger. The internet absolutely was around when the late actor was cast as the Joker by Christopher Nolan in The Dark Knight, and the initial reaction to that news was not positive. That is a bit of an understatement, in fact. Have a search around, and there are still traces of just how badly the news went down. Ledger would go on to win an Oscar for the role, and create one of the definitive big screen villains of recent times, comic book movie based or not.

Seriously mods, a 3rd link saying the EXACT SAME THING?!

Ledger was one of the best method actors of our time that comic book fans didn't like because he did a movie about gay cowboys jousting in medieval England.  Ben Affleck  is Matt Damons Robin.

Little bit of a difference there.

So Ben will die before the movie is released?

Idunno, man. Keaton was an unexpected surprise, but Affleck? Also, Keaton was getting a lot of coaching from Jack Nicholson. It's going to take a lot of coaching to make Affleck believable. I just don't see it. I'll bet there'll be nipples on the suits again.

Batman has no super powers.  He's farking boring as hell.

2013-08-23 12:01:33 PM
Again with this silly comparison...

Heath Ledger did not have a history of doing a crappy job in a Superhero role and then turn around and call it a humiliation and insurance that he'd never be forced to do it again.

2013-08-23 12:02:48 PM
Ledger as Joker was brilliant and came out of nowhere because he'd never played a similar character before that people could judge him on. Affleck already played a superhero once and, while he wasn't the worst part of Daredevil by far, he definitely wasn't selling it. On the other hand, Chris Evans has convinced me twice that he was right for Captain America, so I guess being in a terrible comic book movie shouldn't be a deal-breaker.

2013-08-23 12:03:32 PM
Ben Affleck couldn't even be a convincing Jack Ryan, a man who's level of badass-ness is far below that of Bruce Wayne/Batman's.

Batman is doomed.

/the end.

Ledger's Joker was good - but it wasn't great by any stretch. Without the suicide, his performance wouldn't be harped on.

There really has been an actor that has taken the Batman role as his own. Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark/Iron Man, Hugh Jackman as Wolverine and even Patrick Stewart as Professor Xavier all have more or less set a standard. When you think of those characters, you think of those actors. With Batman, no one actor has really done that. Some were good as Batman, others as Bruce Wayne, but pulling off both characters has yet to be a success.

2013-08-23 12:10:00 PM
So, if Ben Affleck plays this role, and then kills himself, the movie and his acting will suddenly go from decent to becoming lauded as one of the greatest performances to which the world has ever laid witness?

THIS.

Plus, I'd say Ledger  didn't play the Joker. He played Tom Waits as a Joker-like character who embraced almost none of the original's ideals, quirks, habits, or motivations. It was an interesting character, but it wasn't the Joker.

We can only hope. Ledger ended up doing a truly inspired performance as the Joker, but Affleck as Batman sounds about as good as Orlando Bloom playing Wolverine.
