Really?  I was unaware that he is an adherent of the Prosperity Gospel.

I don't give two shiats WHAT some person is. I give two shiats about whether they try and force their beliefs on me and others through public policy.

No, he's not. He's just a politician, pandering, as is his wont.

2013-08-23 10:49:49 AM
Now if only conservatives could be convinced of this fact.

2013-08-23 10:52:54 AM
I couldn't give a rat's ass if he's christian or not. What I don't want is a presidency that is "divined by God".

I also think it's ridiculous that if a candidate doesn't say he's a christian and doesn't take time every Sunday to attend service, he will never get elected.

/don't get me started on flap lapel pins...

Is this another time when "Liberal" means "People who can accept facts?"

Fun fact: most self-proclaimed Christians would make Jesus cry with their actions

2013-08-23 10:56:02 AM
But this isn't just a far-right phenomenon: If the Obama administration has its way, this influence might go even further.

The example does not support the thesis.

I don't think the Jews consider him one of their own... Rahm Emanual, yes, Obama, no.

Great. When do we get proof that he's a Democrat?

2013-08-23 10:56:27 AM
If being a Christian has anything to do with his change of position on Marriage Equality, his desire to make health care a right instead of a priviledge, and his concern for environmental issues, I think I can live with it.

SilentStrider: Now if only conservatives could be convinced of this fact.

Oh...and THIS.

I do wish for a more separate CHURCH from STATE.

Religion has no place in politics... it corrupts both!

2013-08-23 10:57:57 AM
I know atheists have a large internet presence and but like 75% of democrats are religious so I doubt it really bothers them.

That's not really anything to do with religion though.

We really need someone who can pander to all groups simultaneously. It wouldn't be that hard.

"My fellow legal and illegal Americans, when I visited your town last year, I promised to all atheists, pagans, Jews, Christians, Muslims, Hindus, Sikhs, Shintos, Buddhists and Methodists that I would stand firm on my solemn oath to create jobs for anyone - black, white, Asian, ethnic Jew, ethnic Albanian, Pollock, Lienz Cossack, Limey, Mic, Hispanic, Gook, zipperhead - who wanted (or didn't) one.  Ladies and gentlemen and transgendered or agendered individuals, that time has come today (or yesterday if you live just West of the International Date Line in a U.S. territory)!"

2013-08-23 11:08:57 AM
Yes, he is.

So?

As far as I can tell, he's not trying to codify his version of Christianity into law in violation of the 1st Amendment.

Sure it is.  Colonialists cloathed naked evil as "saving those poor brown people's souls for Christ by beating them severely and taking all their wealth"

Well, the Obama administration did file an amicus brief supporting starting government meetings with a prayer. I think that's wrong (and the whole concept of starting public meetings with a prayer silly), however that is not the same as trying to pass laws because Jesus or because Allah. Obama's sin here is probably a 1 on a 10 point scale.

2013-08-23 11:17:43 AM
That explains quite a bit about Obama's behavior in office, doesn't it?

He should follow Jesus' example and beat the snot out of some bankers.

I suspect that Obama follows the teachings of Christ moreso than most self-described Christians.  Whether he does or not is no skin off my nose.

2013-08-23 11:36:22 AM
I don't mind is Obama's a Christian.

I do mind if he (or any other religious person, group, etc) allows a government entity to uphold one religion over another.

So...these prayers? Can an Atheist/Humanist give a small speech on ethics? Can a clergy member from Islam, Jewish, Hindu, etc, lead a prayer? Does this government entity actively search for diversity in faith contemplation?

2013-08-23 11:36:23 AM
I've known that he was a Christian for quite some time. I have not really cared about that particular flaw because he hasn't been one of those "push my religious beliefs on everyone and everything I come into contact with" kinds of Christians.

I don't mind the Christians that don't wear their faith like a badge of honor or wield it as a weapon.

2013-08-23 11:36:53 AM
They're atheist, so they're automatically librul commies!

/Never mind that there are atheists in other countries whose bigotry toward foreigners rivals any conservative Christian from Texas.

Liberals finally accept the horrible, uncomfortable truth: Obama's a Christian

Are you kidding? It took less than two years for most of them to accept the horrible, uncomfortable truth that he's not a liberal.

Aristocles: I do believe he's made reference to his "Muslim faith."

The problem is that enough do care whether someone is Christian that it's extremely hard for a non-Christian (and that was non-Protestant for a while in the 20th century, and it still is non-mainstream Christian outside of, say, Utah and Minnesota) to successfully run for office.  And if you're outed, then you're screwed (see Pete Stark, and the shameful campaigning that got him ousted from office...by another Democrat, no less).

No doubt that's a problem. I'd love to see us as a nation get to the point where we look past that sort of thing when electing people to office. Probably won't happen in my lifetime. And I'm relatively young. That being said, I have zero problems with a Christian, or any other religious person, being open about their personal beliefs as long as it doesn't influence their policy-making insofar as using those beliefs as a justification for policy.

FTFA:Paradoxically, the Court has issued many decisions enforcing the separation of church and state, yet begins its own proceedings by announcing, "God save the United States and this Honorable Court."

In the name of fairness they should open up on alternet days by stating  "God save the United States FROM this Honorable Court."

Um, I've known this for a long period of time. In fact, he is, if I remember correctly, a member of the United Church of Christ.

You likely haven't heard of them. Not because their obscure, but because they had a number of advertisements *banned from the airwaves* a while ago. Because apparently, messages of love and tolerance are too controversial.

I'm seriously not making this up:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KRcv9u9x3z8

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hx1u1v7hAtY

Both of these ads were banned from several networks.

(Various factions of the UCC have also, individually, been arguing that homosexuality *cannot* be a sin since *the 1970's*, which was not a terribly popular sentiment for the time.)
