Today, video has surfaced of the stop between Madison and Clegg. The video does not show the original confrontation between the two men, during which Madison had a taser pointed in his face while Clegg allegedly said "Don't make me pull this trigger!"

What magical process stopped this officer's body camera from recording during the stop and handcuff, and then suddenly made it start recording once anything questionable was over? Is it the same one that disabled the cruiser's dash camera?

/is that magical process called "Officer Clegg"?

Well, that was pointless. If I want to watch people argue pointlessly for 10 minutes, I'll go home and listen to my kids fight about whose turn it is to unload the dishwasher.

You allow your kids to go on for 10 minutes? After 3 minutes, I'm in the room assigning duties and telling everybody to shadditup.

I know a few cops and their cameras and mics (body and dash) activate as soon as they turn on their emergency lights.  They also said that if they were to disable them at any time during the confrontation they would be reprimanded.  I wonder what gives here?

A freaking 10 minute video of AFTER THE FACT?

Nope.

2013-08-23 11:43:29 AM
Sounds like they are idiots all around: Man should have followed traffic rules in front of police, police should have let his minor infraction go, man shouldn't have whipped out his cell phone while the police were asking him questions, police shouldn't have threatened to taser him. When a person with a need to exercise authority meets a person with a sense of entitlement, sparks are bound to fly.

And yet, people watch it.  That's how modern journalism works.  Everyone watches the whole thing to see if there's anything of any relevance in it, and then they're disappointed when there isn't, but Opposing Views gets the clicky clicky credit.

Witnesses are bad. Explains why the video shows absolutely nothing about what happened during the critical time when the man was threatened with a taser.

No, that's how it works at most agencies.  The controls for the cameras a wired into the light control unit in the console so the cameras come on when the lights do.  Or at least with the old units that actually had a VCR in a lock box in the trunk and you would run out of VHS during a shift....  The new units with the stupid sized digital memory are always on.

Make it go away? No.  But you can certainly call 911 (or the Chief, I suppose) if you feel that the officer is violating your rights.  Personally, I would have just demanded a supervisor rather than start making a bunch of phone calls.

And you will get the same treatment. Ignoring a cops instructions to put down the phone during a questioning will result in you having a bad day. You demand anything and you'll likely have a worse day. Like it or not, you are not in charge, the guy with the badge, taser and gun is. You don't demand shiat in that circumstance, you ask politely.

Just sayin'.

To the COntrary, it shows EVERYTHING!, just like the dog gave the game away by failing to bark, This video backs up the pastor's story by failing to show anything.  Since we know that a video record WAS possible through the entire encounter, but was only commenced well into the stop, we know the officers had something to hide before that and the pastor is telling the truth ispo facto, ... Fax mentis incendium gloria cultum, et cetera, et cetera... Memo bis punitor delicatum! It's all there, black and white, clear as crystal!

Bikes are vehicles, so you must obey traffic laws when you are riding one. There are almost daily threads on this site about this very topic.

Back when I had a road bike and was going down a hill I actually got pulled over for speeding. No ticket, but a lecture and told to take it easy.

No, thats exactly how the recording system works.  Also, the recorders are in a lockbox in the trunk and the officers do not have the key.  The recordings are evidence, typically.

Who think like what? Reality? Go ahead, try ignoring instructions during a stop, try demanding anything, see what happens.

Folks like you are what stories like this are all about. You THINK you know what a cop can do/get away with, and what you can do/get away with, and then reality has you flopping on the ground doing the electric boogie with prongs in your chest before getting locked in a cage for a while.

Just to be clear, I don't like it either, but that's neither here nor there.

Why? That thinking sounds pretty reasonable to me. It's all about human psychology. The police need to feel in control; it's probably a big reason they are police in the first place. If you do anything to challenge that notion, whether you are completely within your rights or not, you increase the chance that your confrontation will go badly.
