"Well that's Barack Obama. He has his way, he presents himself - or the way his handlers present him - as basically a kind of blank slate on which you can write whatever you like," he said during the interview.

Oh we can do this all day.

"Well that's Barack Obama Mitt Romney. He has his way, he presents himself - or the way his handlers present him - as basically a kind of blank slate etch a sketch on which you can write whatever you like," he said during the interview.

"Well that's Barack Obama George W Bush. He has his way, he presents himself - or the way his handlers present him - as basically a kind of blank slate stare on which you can write whatever you like," he said during the interview.

And I do think he is basically right. But her comments weren't thought out, she was just being 'if he's fer it, I'm aginst it'

You know, the guy's name is written right there in the actual article's headline, subby. Although I do like the look of "chompsky."

After years of being the Democrat Party's 'Exhibit A' for everything that's wrong about right-wing politics in America, Sarah Palin has won praise from one of the left's most respected intellectuals.

Meh.. everyone knows Chomsky has become a crotchety fascist in his old age.  He probably just wants someone to pay attention to him, and is too dignified to yell at empty chairs.

Become? He was always a bit of an odd fit in American politics. I remember reading some of his stuff in 2005 in college, and thinking that most of the left - including the college left - would find him aa bit daffy and radical.

// not that 2005 is so long ago, but the work was from the 80s, I think
// his stuff on linguistics is pretty good...

Yeah, the first bit tells you who they are. The second, well it could be true depending upon if you mean left - as in actually left or far left as opposed to the false description of the Democratic Party as "left."

I wonder how Wittgenstein would view him today.

But from that standpoint, the man's not wrong here.  Politics is advertising.  The language of politics obscures the reality of the issues.  Chomsky's problem is he's abrasive and expresses himself poorly.  He doesn't seek to entice you to his point of view.  He beats you harshly with it.

Where he fails here is in divorcing Palin's motives for her statements from the statements themselves.  Her rhetoric vs. reality problem is just as bad as the Hope and Change thing.

I much preferred Murray Edelman to Noam Chomsky when reading poli sci books was a thing that I did. Didn't hurt that he was a graduate of my alma mater.

Noam Chomsky has ALWAYS been a critic of BIG GOVERNMENT and the power of empires.

It's amazing that it's a news story that  Sarah Palin's broken clock was RIGHT for TWO MINUTES out of 24 hours.

/In other news, politicians lie
//Politician's job is to create a vague platform that anyone can mold in their head as their own
///Funny that people still have not realized that politics is a dirty game, where you tell the sheep you will not fleece it.

The problem with things like this is that we expect the fringe left to be unhappy.  Most of us don't care that people like Chompsky dislike him because, well, it's Chompsky.  He's a nutball.

2013-08-23 11:18:42 AM
Well Noam, when Hope and Change was being trumpeted by the Obama team the economy was crashing. It was a scary time and people were looking to government for solutions.

Bush was president and the idea of change from that eight years resonated. Hope was the antidote to the despair many were feeling. It was Reaganesque.

The slogan was sincere. Obama was a change from Bush. Hope was a needed and vital component of his success as president. Consumer confidence is integral to economic recovery. The economy has been slowly recovering. Hope played a role in that.

It was a good slogan. And not empty.

Infernalist: When you're leading from the middle, people from both sides of the fringe are going to dislike your style.

By middle you must mean the status quo. He doesn't really seem to even hold to centrist ideals, he often just settles for the path of least resistance, which is usually somewhere a little right of center.

Chomsky says he agrees with the Tea Party favourite that Obama's "Hope" and "Change" messages were just marketing pabulum.

"[It's] understood by the people who run the political system, that it's no great secret that the U.S. electoral system is mainly a public relations extravaganza to keep away from issues," he said. "It's sort of a marketing affair. And the people who run it are the advertisers."

Chomsky adds that this was self evident, because the Hope/Change message won a marketing award before the election was even over.

EHRMAGERD!!!!! He said Palin was right!!!

Wait, he said it about what? You mean that every sentient being in existence didn't know this already? Oh, they did? Then why is this news? What kind of answer is "Because Jesus"? That doesn't even make any sense. I'm going to get an ice cream cone, you're too weird for me...

Thanks for the Newsflash, Noam.  I kind of figured that out when I was twelve and I heard "A Thousand Points of Light" - my standard for meaningless, feel-good political jingles.

Next you'll tell me that American flags waving in slow-motion over wavy filed of grain is a cliche.

That was a weird adverticle for Sarah Palin. It's not really Chomsky agreeing on any point Palin has ever had, it's just that they both dislike Obama.

"Sarah Palin exhales CO2. Known libtard Noam Chomsky also exhales CO2. Bet you never read about that in your Howard Zinn books or hear about it on Melissa Harris-Perry, HENNNGH?"

Oh, how jaded the supporters of Obama have become.  No less zealous, but seriously jaded.

Hope?  Change?  You think we believed in that shiat?  Not for a second.  I mean, we're realists, man, we know Obama's just a politician, just like all the other politicians.  Except we don't disagree with anything he's ever done or said and think anyone who does is a hateful ignoramus.  Because even when he says and does things that we wouldn't otherwise agree with, we know he's only saying or doing that because he has to.  And the only reason he ever fails is because gridlock Republitards.

No, marketing is marketing. It's not that the 'Hope and Change' thing is any kind of bullshiat, most political candidates run for office because in some place in their hearts(No matter how black), they have Hopes that they will be able to Change things. They all say this in their campaign speeches, too. Obama's campaign was just smart enough to come up with a good marketing campaign for what almost everybody already does.

Palin made no new revelations, she just came across as childish, and I'm not sure we should be encouraging that in her.
