meat0918: I hear fully automatic weapons take care of the problem real quick.

FTFA: An estimated 750,000 of the animals are harvested each year - not enough to keep pace with the birth rate. Tyson said that as things stand, the number of feral hogs in Texas is predicted to grow by 16% annually, roughly doubling in five years

Sounds like they need a lot more fully automatic weapons.

Depends on where they were living, get one that has been tearing up corn and soybean crops its whole life and you have good eating.

This.

If you get them under a year old, and just use the tenderloins, they are barely ok.  Otherwise nasty as all get out.
The ones in Florida are better.

I say go old school on them and do full on spear hunting. Have some hounds chase them towards a group of people with spears and in a few minutes they're on a spit and ready for a BBQ.

Some idiot lawmaker back east said he doesn't know of a soul who hunts with ARs or AKs  and therefore they have no business being in the hands of civilians. I pointed out that I know quite a few people who use them in an attempt to help keep the feral swine population down. For some reason the fine folks here on Fark thought I was full of shiat and ran with it. Their ignorance is my amusement.

FWIW, I know these guys and might be able to get you booked on a flight next year. As I understand they are booked solid for the rest of 2013. I promise not to tell them that you're a commie lib. :P

We were so close to coming to the consensus that there was no use for an AR15 in the general population's hands.  I mean, home defense is better left to handguns and shotguns, hunting is better done with scoped rifles or shotguns...

But then someone wisely pointed out that Texans would need them for controlling feral hog populations.  So close!

Suburban Funston?? Are there more than 3 people living there now?

My mother's family was from the country out that way that used to be referred to as "the shinnery". Grandmother lived in Anson proper when I was a kid, great-aunts and uncles nearby. I used to love standing in my aunt's front yard. You could do a 360 and not see another house.

Inside joke for those in the know. Glad to see I found another here!  I'm north of 180 and not in the shinnery. There are some strange goings on back on some of those county roads. Lot of meth too.

Still have family in the area?

Well they were probably just having a dig at you for shiats and giggles I imagine. The feral hog problem is pretty common knowledge. We've even had them here in City Park.

As for your offer, I appreciate it, but (1) I don't want to shoot anything with a heartbeat unless I plan to eat it, and (2) your buddies would sniff me out the minute I asked them if they can get NPR on the helicopter radio.

A cousin who inherited the aunt's place, probably some more distant cousins that I wasn't around very much. I like West Texas a great deal. Don't think I would ever want to live east of Ft. Worth.

I agree.  I have no problem with people hunting them as long as they use the meat.  Just shooting them and leaving them to rot isn't right.

I've known people who have hunted them and supposedly they do taste good.  They have a stronger flavor than supermarket pork, so if you like game meats you'd probably be into it, if you don't, maybe not.

I'd assume it also depends on their diet.  They're omnivorous and will eat practically anything they come across.  Those that have plenty of vegetation in their diet probably taste better than the ones eating garbage and other animals.

2013-08-22 07:26:54 PM
The funny thing about people bringing up the AR15 is that it is not enough weapon for most feral hogs. I would carry something much heavier (.30cal +++). Stupid argument and yes I know 'pro' rights folks have made the argument (capacity) and it is dumb.

You didn't ask me, but I'll share. The meat is definitely 'game-er' than regular pork, but if you like deer, elk, etc, you'll probably enjoy it. Ranch Hogs are basically raised in the US for their bacon first, so getting a nice fatty pork belly is the norm. You won't get that out of a feral hog, way leaner. General meat = yum, bacon = no, sorry.

It's not so much that man is encroaching upon land they once inhabited (like coyotes for example), but the hogs themselves breed rapidly and can soon become a menace as they migrate towards urban centers from the countrysides.

I agree, but it seems wasteful to just shoot them to shoot them, of course, they are harming the environment, so I can see it from the perspective of shooting them to protect native species as well.

It would be nice if there was a program to get the meat to homeless shelters, food banks, etc, so that it could be put to a good cause.

I'm not sure that's feasible, since from what I've heard adults are not really edible.

If they're allowed to proliferate the population would eventually crash, but not without taking a swath of the environment with them.

Shooting them is merciful by comparison. I'd just rather not be the one to do it.
