(Al Jazeera)   Excess iron linked to Alzheimer's Disease. Didn't we just have a thread about copper causing this? Or was it lead? I'm confused. I like cats   (america.aljazeera.com) divider line 65

Ral: AlJazeera?  Really?

Really, why not? It's not like it's a political or middle east interest article, it's straight medical. What makes them less reputable then Fox News or even my local paper on such topics?

Etchy333: Man, we really have to ban these elements.  They seem to be the cause of everything.

You are neither as smart or as funny as you think you are. The problem is that excess iron, excess copper, and excess lead can each contribute to Alzheimer's. Oxygen is toxic at too high a concentration. Don't believe me? Try to see how long you live in a pure oxygen atmosphere. No, I don't mean fire, I mean toxicity.

MonoChango: lilbjorn: A decade or so ago it was definitely aluminum.

When I was in college, I knew a guy that wouldn't use deodorant because it had aluminum in it and knew that it caused Alzheimer's.  I couldn't decide if he was crazy, stupid, or just kinky about his own stinky.

You will be sorry when you get to age 65 and your armpits can't remember their own name.

About five years ago, Dr. Paolo Zamboni theorized that Multiple Sclerosis was often caused by a build up of iron in the brain.  The problem was with a valve in the base of the skull, resulting in what is called Chronic cerebrospinal venous insufficiency.  He surgically replaced the valve with a stent to facilitate the excess iron draining out of the brain, and got some good results.  It is still controversial.

And the NIH published a paper in 1992 speculating on iron being the problem in Alzheimer's.  Though other metals are also suspected of possible involvement, but possibly with the same proximate cause, lack of drainage.
