I thought the main problem with the production was the high wire work.

Now they're going to take it on the road?!?

This was the plan all along, and the increasingly common Broadway business model:

1) Create an extremely lavish production to the point that it's so expensive that you'll probably never break-even because there are simply not enough seats in the house to sell;
2) Run the show for a few years, create national buzz, ignore all of the money you're losing;
3) Once you're confident that a sufficient amount of buzz has been generated, tour the show;
4) Instead of touring it in Broadway style houses where there are a max of ~1,000 seats, reformat it for arenas where there are 5,000 seats;
5) Now that you're off Broadway use non-AEA actors to save money; and
5) Make massive profits.

And this was the whole motivation behind Spiderman -- the producers dreamt up something that could be easily turned into a roadshow arena production.

Diogenes: I could have sworn it said "torturing experience."

They're hoping to get into the Guinness Book of World Records for "Touring stage performance with the most actors injured in the most cities during a single tour." The only way to beat the world record set by the "Spider-Man: Turn Off The Respirator World Tour" will be to pump PCP into every single Cirque du Soleil performer and then have them go on tour world-wide until they're all dead.

I am a huge Spider-Man fan.
I also happen to be an ex-theater geek, and I quite enjoy musicals.

However, I can think of no reason why I'd ever see Turn Off the Dark. None.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that Spider-Man was intended to be a destination show, like Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, given the renovations done to the theater.  This is likely a last-ditch attempt to recoup.
