So I have to sell my existing home, live in Gary for six months before purchasing it, then live in the home for at least five years unless I want to forfeit everything? Golly, where do I sign?

To be fair, any industrial town is like that. There's a town in Ontario with a pulp and paper mill (or used to be when I was a kid) the absolutely stank every single time we drove through it.

But yes, from what I have heard, Gary make Detroit look like paradise.

This is so true.
When I was out in Indy and Terre Haute for biz some of the guys I was working for told me what had become of it.
I was skeptical and didn't want to believe it was so bad, so we did a side trip on our way to Detroit Metro airport.
All I can say is they had severely understated just how awful things had gotten.

Probably Dryden, if you ever took the Trans-Canada.

People of Gary are overly friendly in a weird sort of way. Every single person at a McDonalds there said "Hi" with a huge smile.

This is how Gary greets people driving from Chicago. It's accurate, as Gary is a bit of a sh*thole... Seriously, you can smell it from way before the sign.

You ain't lying subby. Usually I just drive through that whole area but a couple of summers ago I was trying to buy a lotto ticket in each state. I got to within a couple exits of the border (going west) before I remembered, and saw "Exit 1" and figured it was my last chance so I took it. I drove the main drag for a couple of miles until I came to a crappy little convenience store with a bunch of thugs just hanging out inside near the thick plexiglass that separated them from the terrified looking cashier. No tickets. Well, bye.

Lucky for me there's an "Exit 0" and was able to purchase one, but dang, between Gary and Chicago is the saddest, ugliest stretch of I-90 I've seen.

The one on Central and North Ave. is surprisingly tame at 3am. Now the one on Grand and Mannheim, that's a different story.

Does Gary even have industry anymore? I thought that was part of the city's problem. (And also Detroit's problem, when you come right down to it.) Is there a lingering odor of pollutants?

Still wouldn't want to live there.

1) must have lived in Gary for at least six months
2) have $1,000 in savings
3) earn at least 80% of the median annual income of $35,250 in the area
4) demonstrate that they have the financial ability to rehabilitate the home.
5) do not currently own a home
6) must occupy the house for five years before they assume full ownership. If they leave before that, they forfeit everything.

Yeah, good luck with that, it's like they're making an online dating profile or something.

// already own a home, have plenty of savings, earn way more than their median income, can rehabilitate the home. Have not lived in, and don't desire to live in Gary.

So obvious

Oh, and the only part of Chicago you can get to in 30 minutes from Gary is South Side, which is pretty much just as bad as Gary. Why drive half an hour just to go from one slum to another?
