Pigeon Forge, Sevierville and Gatlinburg should be nuked from orbit.

It's the only way to be sure everything is dead.

Gatlinburg isn't all that bad if you're the right type.

The right type being hiking up the Smoky Mountains during the day, and then being able to hike from some good steak/bbq places while besotted with whiskey back to your hotel at night. It's the best of the wilderness and civilization.

But yes, driving through Pigeon Forge is an experience.

More cinnamon bread and kickass roller coasters for me, then. I'll take a wild guess and say you haven't been to Dollywood in the last decade or so?

Pigeon Forge tourism chief Leon Downey cheered the announcement, noting that tourism in the town of 5,000 residents' only industry.

Years and years ago, I interviewed to be the Library Director there.  IIRC, there were other things besides Dollywood, still.  But it was, by and large, depressing.

OK.. the giant wooden coaster can stay.

If you're into roller coasters, you need to ride Wild Eagle.

My in-laws live in Maryville and I went to school at UTK.  We like going out to the Smokies when we're there long enough.  Our favorite thing to do is to go up in the mountains and have a picnic by the river and go tubing.  We stay away from Pigeon Forge unless we want to do some serious shopping.  I haven't been to Dollywood since I was in 4th grade.

Well I remember when it was silver dollar city, but I guess I need to get off your lawn since you remember before that.

I'd help you press the button if you'd add Branson Missouri and the Wisconsin Dells to your list.

Though I have to say that driving through these tourist trap towns that spring up around local area theme parks is something to see. The Simpsons got it right when they said they are the Los Vegases for the Ned Flanders type.

That area is awesome.  You can rent a two/three bedroom cabin for ~$120 a night.  Cabin has full kitchen, game room with pool table, video machine, big screen TV, hot tub.  They're clean, fairly well secluded and managed by good companies that will fix anything you need fixed.  Dollywood is one of the cleanest, friendliest amusement parks in the country.  The Smokey Mountains are simply beautiful, Gatlinburg is like going down the shore, Pigeon Forge is unique and there are some fun if touristy things to do.  If you like edged tools, don't miss Smokey Mountain Knife Works.  Highly recommended.

Pigeon Forge doesn't have liquor by the drink.  Go to Townsend instead.

I lived there and near there as a kid before DollyWood took over.  I had great memories of Ghost Town in the Sky, etc...  A few years back between jobs I rode my scooter back up there to visit the places of my youth.

I left town and went back to my campsite as fast as humanly possible.  WTF happened to that place?

My folks retired to nearby Alcoa. Since Dollywood is open every day but Christmas, we usually go once in the early spring and once in November. It's never crowded and the roller coasters are awesome. For an amusement park with that many high quality rides, is not even expensive, either.

2013-08-22 07:04:29 AM
Everyone makes fun of Dollywood, but it's a nice park with great rides and is the county's largest employer.  Brings a lot of money into the area.  Gatlinburg is good, the hiking trails are so close to town (seriously, one starts about 100 yards from the Texas Roadhouse).  Very enjoyable to hike then come back down to town for steak and drinks.

Pigeon Forge is garish, but if you like outlet malls and go-karts thats the place for you.

No you don't. Wing Riders, while very pretty are generally dull and boring as all hell.

Thunderhead is the "must do" ride at Dollywood, IMO.

[Men]
June is bustin' out all over!
All over the meadow and the hill!
Buds're bustin' outa bushes
And the rompin' river pushes
Ev'ry little wheel that wheels beside the mill!

June is bustin' out all over!
The feelin' is gettin' so intense
That the young Virginia creepers
Hev been huggin' the bejeepers
Outa all the mornin'-glories on the fence.
Because it's June!
June, June, June
Jest because it's June, June, June!

June is bustin' out all over!
The ocean is full of Jacks and Jills,
With her little tail a-swishin'
Ev'ry lady fish is wishin'
That a male would come
And grab her by the gills!

[All]
Because it's June! June, June, June
Just because it's June, June, June!

[Barbara]
Fresh and alive and gay and young
June is a love song, sweetly sung

[Girls]
June is bustin' out all over!
The saplin's are bustin' out with sap!
Love he's found my brother, "Junior,"
And my sister's even lunier,
And my ma is gettin' kittenish with Pap.

[All]
June is bustin' out all over!

[Barbara]
June is bustin' out all over!
The sheep aren't sleepin' any more.
All the rams that chase ewe sheep
Are determined there'll be new sheep,
And the ewe sheep aren't even keepin' score!

[All]
Because it's June! June, June, June
Just because it's June, June, June!
It's June! It's June, June, June
Just because it's June, June...

[Claramae]
March went out like a lion
A-whippin' up the water in the bay.
Then April cried and stepped aside,
And along came pretty little May!

May was full of promises,
But she didn't keep 'em quick enough for some,
And a crowd of Doubtin' Thomases
Was predictin' that the summer'd never come.

[Men]
But it's comin', by gum!
Y' ken can feel it come,
Y' ken can feel it in yer heart,
Y' ken can see it in the ground,

[Girls]
Y' ken can see it in the trees,
Y' ken can smell it in the breeze

[All]
Look around, look around, look around!

[Claramae]
To ladies the men are payin' court.
Lotsa ships are kept at anchor
Jest because the captains hanker
Fer the comfort they ken only get in port!

[Barbara]
June makes the bay look bright and new,
Sails gleamin' white on sunlit blue.

[All]
You can hear it comin'!

[Claramae]
June is bustin' out all over
The moonlight is shining on the shore
And the girls who were contrary
With the boys in January,
Aren't nearly for contrary anymore!

[Claramae and Chorus]
Because it's June! June, June, June
Just because it's June, June, June!

[Ballet]

[All]
On accounta it's June!
June, June, June
Jest because it's June, June, June

That. And everything I said about Gatlinburg, Branson wishes so hard. We stayed there for a week as well, but had to space out our outdoors stuff and there was literally *one* restaurant worth going to in the whole town, and that was a little mom+pop place up out of town about 10 minutes.

Good lord their omelets were good. And the pancakes were plate sized. It's called Billy Gail's, and I can't recommend it enough. An oasis in the desert.

We hit a main road on Branson *once*, because the wife wanted to go see Dolly's Stampede thing again (memories from childhood). It was cute, I guess, but we go to Ringling every year with the kids so my bar is pretty high for animals running around.

Fortunately the place we were at was a cabin with a fireplace, and it was March, so we figured out something to do.

End Slavery Boycott the circus! sorry just farking with you. My friend had that a bumpersticker that said that.

My ex lives in Forsyth, just up the moutain from Branson so I have spent a lot of time in the area. I always thought the area was gorgoeus with the Ozarks, but the rest of it just a tourist trap. The fountain at the landing is kind of cool for a one off thing to see.

Just remove the honkies, then most of your problems would be solved right there.

Meanwhile, I might just go visit scenic Bronson, Missouri.

Yeah it is.  In my head that's just down the road.  Closed down last I heard.  There was also the 'Dinosaur' amusement park right in PF too.  That's long gone though.  When I lived there IIRC it was just a two lane road through town.  Almost all the old stuff I recall was probably razed.
