I love the Seattle uniforms but for a great "modern style" uniform the best I've seen is from the BC Lions debuted a few days ago. They're great...

Seahawks at #22.  About where I expected; one-third of the voters had them #1 and two-thirds had them at #32.

People should take a closer look at the Seahawks unis; everyone assumed they would be going full Oregon, but they really didn't.  They're not that extreme.

So personally, I'd vote the Raiders #1 and the Bengals or possibly the Broncos #32.  Patriots are too damn high, Jets are too damn low.  Good to learn that teams are dropping those ugly neck yoke things they had last year.  Oh, and if I hear one more person say "the Chargers' powder blue unis are the best in sports," I'm gonna puke.

Agreed. All of these lists are headed by teams that have looked the same, or relatively so, for decades.

For example, I think GB looks like crap, DAL is boring as hell, and PHI is practically anonymous. And SEA and BAL look great, yet Mr. 1950s has them both in the bottom half of the league. Whatever.

FTFA:

Here are some notes and ground rules to keep in mind:

• All judging has been done by the Uni Watch Power Rankings Executive Committee, which has a membership of one and freely admits its biases. The committee is rather fond of striped socks and the color green, for example, but is less enthusiastic about the color purple and design "innovations" that just feel like gimmicks. If you don't share the committee's preferences, then you're totally hopeless and it's a wonder you can dress yourself in the morning that's fine -- the whole point of a project like this one is that it's fun to argue and disagree. (Just to provide some diversity of opinion, we've also invited ESPN.com writers in the four major sports to give their rebuttals to the Power Rankings. Their thoughts will be posted as sidebars throughout the week.)

• Each team has been ranked primarily on the basis of its current home and road uniforms, with alternate uniforms taken into account if they're part of the team's regular uni rotation. One-off designs, special promotions, throwbacks and so on have not been considered.

• Some teams are in more or less the same chart position they occupied last year, while many others have moved up or down in the Power Rankings. Sometimes this was due to a team having changed its uniform design; in other cases it was due to a reassessment of the team's aesthetic status. We've added a "Trending" column to the charts this year, so you can see how a team's current ranking compares to last year's. (The "Trending" numbers on Monday through Thursday will refer to a team's position within its own league, while the numbers on Friday will refer to a team's overall position on the 122-team chart.)

• In a few cases, ranking a team's "current" uniform set has been tricky. The Phoenix Suns, for example, revealed their new uniforms just a few days ago, and several other teams have new unis that have been showcased in unveiling events but not yet worn on the field, court or ice. Similarly, a few new NFL uniforms have been worn in only one or two preseason games. In each case, these uniforms have been evaluated as best as possible, but it would be fair to say that their rankings should probably be viewed as though they had an asterisk.

• Several NHL teams are expected to release new alternate jerseys very soon -- but not soon enough to make it into the Power Rankings. They'll be taken into consideration next time around.

Nice to see in a list based on looks, he describes the Redskins as "In strictly aesthetic terms, Washington's white jersey, gold pants and striped socks add up to one of the best looks in the league, " but still ranks them 19th because of the NAME.

And the Gold pants an accompanying socks need their striping changed to match the jersey, white pants and burgundy pants striping pattern.

2013-08-21 02:27:03 PM

Scrotastic Method: For example, I think GB looks like crap, DAL is boring as hell, and PHI is practically anonymous. And SEA and BAL look great, yet Mr. 1950s has them both in the bottom half of the league. Whatever.

I agree with him that the old green on Philly's looks better. I like the other two jerseys, but I'll just remind you that of course he hates the Ravens' uniforms - they're purple. Dude does NOT like purple.

There isn't enough variation in NFL uniforms to do a ranking. They either are basically the same with different colors and considered "classic" (Chicago, Minnesota, Green Bay, Pittsburgh, Oakland, etc.) or they're god awful new fangled Nike inspired shiat like the Seahawks and Jaguars.

I am criminally, disgustingly biased in this matter, but I nonetheless argue that this is the best uni set in all of sports, and should redeem his personal distaste against the primary set:

I think the Ravens are also 11-2 all time in all-black, and in black jerseys they've never lost under Harbaugh (though for the first few years he insisted on white pants with the black tops, like in teh Suggs pic up top).

A little, but the word Redskins only appears as a tiny wordmark beneath the collar. The helmet logo is a respectful Native American Portrait, and the burgundy & gold look good. I'd say on pure looks, the Redskins is a top 10, especially if you're tradition minded. My top two are probably Packers &  Bears. Texans third.

gameshowhost: Bears unis above Packers unis? WTF is this shiat

For 2 very similar uniforms (with similar style logos, etc.) he did offer one very good reason and one personal quibble to separate the two. He likes striped socks (take or leave the one). The other was the over-sized numbers on the shoulders for the Packers. If you're distinguishing between a 99 and a 98%, that seems a reasonable argument - they do look a smidge worse. I'd add the orange piping around the numbers as another bump to the score. But really you're just distinguishing between 2 great uniforms.

I'm a fan of the Raiders uniforms, they've stuck with tradition for so long now that it would be almost criminal to change them.  I like Baltimore more in purple, but the all black works too.

If you're going to go new-school, you have to do something crazy.  It's college, but I loved the 'state flag' uniforms Maryland tried last year, something neat about doing something asymmetric.

I've already spent waaaay too much time looking at these rankings.

While I do believe the author is stuck in the past that doesn't mean he is wrong about some of the more modern looks in the NFL.

Some like the Panthers and current Chargers are pretty good looks as are the Texans and Titans. The stuff the Broncos and Seahawks sport however look like Arena League rejects. Denver's is especially tragic considering how good their Orange Crush and D logo unis looked. I love Baltimore's unis as well but the helmet logo is one of the worst in the NFL. With a name as cool as Ravens they should have something better than that high school looking bird head they have now.

The Packers and Bears are nice but not top 5 worthy and while the Browns have a classic look, that color combination is just too ugly to ever make top 10 status. Dude must yell at a lot of clouds if he thinks these are among the best in the league.

That is his number, but the jerseys weren't of historic Cowboys players - they were just the leftover numbers that didn't sell at his main store, I guess.
