I like both Reddit and Fark.  I prefer Fark for comments and Reddit for content that I would not get here.  The key as someone else said is to avoid the default subs (if you're looking for a conversation) as they are horrid.

On the other hand you can get to see how nonsensical some subreddits are, here's a thread showing as such:

Somethingawful is a dwarf of its former self, but it still has 7-10,000 active users on its forum at any time.  Fark runs about triple that right now, based on google trends. Fark has a much higher lurker/poster ratio, so it feels more intimate, even though it's bigger. I outgrew SA's frontpage years ago, but I still get a lot of mileage out of their forums.

What's interesting is that even though reddit has blown up, it's still only gets about 70% of the traffic as 2005 Fark.

I've always liked the paywall aspect of Somethingawful. A lot of Indie Game developers still use its games section as a springboard for ideas and debugging (Project Eternity, Dungeonmans, Starbound). I think the smaller user base and the high level of moderation makes the site a lot friendlier for people like that to share their ideas.

Fark pretty much raised me though, and I've read it nearly every single day since I was 16. Fark is my newspaper, except there are always people in the comments that have way more to add. In spite of the trolls, there is still some great debate that goes on here.

Reddit is basically turning into the Google of message boards, and there is a ton of value in that, but it's not what I'm looking for in a website.

I like that Fark is a pretty unified community, whereas with Reddit and Somethingawful, everyone has their own pockets of the site that they visit. Fark is never going to win the 13-24 bracket, but it was never designed to. This is still one of the largest adult communities on the internet, even though a lot of us act like children sometimes.

By the way, Ron Paul is doing an AMA tomorrow at 4:00 p.m.

You can bet money there will be tons of posts calling him out, but they won't take the bait. It'll be worth checking out just for the contrast to this Tea Bagger amateur.

there certainly is a lot of bitterness towards reddit here.... Do I sense a bit of jealousy? Reddit certainly has its faults (It seems very easy to whip its users into personal crusades and it's only a step above Facebook in terms slacktivism.), but I generally prefer it to Fark if only because there's more to it.

thismomentinblackhistory: James!: Wow, Reddit is unreadable.

Cobblestone Flag: This is still one of the largest adult communities on the internet

I guess i kind of feel like this place is often less adult and more "Curmudgeonly old fart who biatches constantly." Sometimes it's fun to biatch, but sometimes it really feels like no one really enjoys anything here.

Oddly enough, I prefer the politics tab here to r/politics. R/politics is a cesspool. I made the mistake of posting there once and immediately got like 80 responses all saying the exact same thing.

Reddit's fine if you ditch the default subs and find niches that cover what you're into.  I follow /r/boardgames, /r/tall, and a few others that are off the beaten path, and they're very, very solid online communities.

Sure, there's part that's full of idiots, pedos, MRAs, and racists, but they get called out pretty hard by the other part that thinks that has no place, and you don't see them much in the non-primary subs.

I'm amused by the hate from Farkers over things like site design (Fark has changed how much since 2001?  Slightly cleaner look, tabs for types of articles, and uh...).  I mean, we only just got a WYSIWYG comment box last year!

Now get back to tearing this guy a new one.  That's far more entertaining.

I definitely understand that...I prefer the more limited, focused scope here, but that simply comes down to preference.

I post mostly in Politics here, but I never even read /r/politics.  It'd make me kill something within minutes.
Here, politics discussion is mostly hinged, with a collection of paid trolls that come and go over the months/years that everyone shouts down.  There... yikes.

But then, how many people read /r/politics vs. how many read FARK Politics?  Much larger audience, so the 30% confirmed retarded portion of the population will be much more noticeable

/also probably more people will bother to pay trolls on a well-known site like Reddit than a relative backwater like FARK

Fark, Reddit, Daily Show, Colbert = infromed!

Reddit is like the general population, there are a plethora of knuckleheads and kids tasting freedom, but there are some seriously smart folks too. But it does take some time to learn your way around, most of the subreddits aren't even listed. Just yesterday I read a thread  about Cherenkov radiation and several people knew their stuff. Type anything you might be in to into the search and you will find out it's pretty common. You can just click the random button a few times and you'll see something interesting.

Just don't click on anything labeled NSFL or ever go to a subreddit called Spacedicks (you already went didn't you)

I think the biggest thing missing from r/politics that's present in the Politics Tab is a sense of humor. It feels like everyone who posts in r/politics is way overly serious about every topic. It feels like all responses there are someone chastising someone else.

this place is also much better once the paid trolls (and those who respond to them) are blocked.

I honestly have no bitterness towards Reddit. As I said, I just can't stand the format and setup. They need to move into the 21st century.

I got him in cheddar yellow.

I love Fark, I started going to Reddit because one day a "biatch about Reddit thread" was so annoying I went out of spite.  I like both.  /r/talesfromretail can be pretty good, a couple of authors I like are on Reddit and I've gotten to ask them a couple of things.  Who isn't down for the occasional .gif of a guy getting hit in the nuts?

But Fark has that certain spiteful, seething hilarity in the comments threads that I've come to count on so much.

Snarcoleptic_Hoosier: Question 1. "Do you like Ron Paul, pot, and poor economic ideas?"

/Reddit politics in a nutshell

I'm a big fan of this strange Reddit/Fark elitism considering the political discourse is about the same level on both sides. IE: rational discussion getting buried under a torrent of shills, trolls, and 13-year-olds trying to be "edgy."

Dhusk:  There's a good reason why Reddit has 20x+ the number of users than Fark.

The same reason Transformers outgrosses any movie of substance?

Don't forget:

1. Aren't white men the most oppressed group in society currently and forever?

2. Girls are mean to nerds. Is it ok to hate all women, especially geeky ones, in perpetuity because Sally called me a nerd in third period?

3. Why has Electronic Arts not been arrested and prosecuted for making games I did not enjoy, including sports games that only dudebros who beat me up in school play?

4. I am a fan of pornography of questionable legality. What protections do you offer for online forums where such things might be discussed at length?

Pure redditry right there.

I used to be a farker, now I am a redditor.  I read stuff on fark that I read 2-3 days ago on reddit.

mediablitz: LOL. The "I hate reddit" comments are mighty transparent.

It's okay. You can visit FARK and Reddit. Reddit has much more depth than FARK, if you are willing to look.

Yeah, this reddit hate is kinda mystifying.  I, too, thought reddit was confusing the first time I visited.  Then I realized that I the leaning curve was steep, and that I preferred the land of threaded comments, comment voting, and an infinite number of subs to pick from.

Seriously, Fark, it's freaking hard to follow unthreaded discussions when they get to any sort of volume.

2013-08-21 07:38:16 PM
Let me guess: someone told him that Reddit was libertarianism in action. He then thought, "Libertarians are just Republicans who want to smoke pot." Reality ensued.

Reddit is where 4chan kiddies go once they "mature".

Clearly you've never said the word Reddit on 4chan. They are not fans.

4chan may be the asshole of the internet, but it's a wide gaping asshole with lots of variety and even a few decent boards (ok, maybe just /tg/) while Reddit is more of a screaming clusterfark with the occasional (short lived, usually) enjoyable sub.

I love right wing derp media so much. It's emboldened conservatives when they talk amongst themselves, but when they have to communicate with non conservatives they just cry and get defensive. They may have bullied the media to abide by their arbitrary rule of "fairness" where every Republican criticism must be counterbalanced by a criticism of liberals, but the Internet is not going to play by their rules.

How to Reddit

1. Be a clueless 20-year-old white male

2. Probably at a community college or commuter school

3. Have a crippling devotion to Gabe Newell

4. Have edgy opinions about pot, eugenics, race relations, feminism, and RON PAUL

5. Enjoy "jailbait" and dropping n-bombs because you're totally not racist, you hate everybody

6. Get really mad about the Internet

Projection, cognitive dissonance, hypocrisy, etc.  That's their usual MO.

Also:  Anybody want to make a friendly wager that one of these morons on the RW will call to ban the internet?  Frankly, (to refer to a Bill Simmons theory) the RW entered the Tyson Zone a LONG time ago.

Invisible Pedestrian: Would still like to find something that's a nice balance between Fark (slow updates, but modmins do a good job of filtering out the crap) and Reddit (faster but some junk, and threaded views of comments).

You're missing the thing that makes reddit far superior to Fark, and it's not the "threaded" commenting structure, it's the fact that upvoting brings relevant/funny/germane responses to the top and relegates the stupidity to the bottom of the feed.

Sure, in some subs the stupidest stuff is voted to the top, but if you're hanging around in /r/pics or /r/adviceanimals you deserve what you get.

Having to wade through thread-shiatting morons who sit and wait to poop in the boobies around here is what makes me love going back to reddit.

One reason that r/ is so good, is that the mods are vicious. AskScience is getting real good also.
