It's okay. You can visit FARK and Reddit. Reddit has much more depth than FARK, if you are willing to look.

If the website developers are willing to take that site out of the Internet Stone Age, then maybe it's worth that look.

The comment sections on reddit are so much easier to use than Fark.  You're notified of replies on the site itself, threaded comments, etc...

Threaded comments are the worst.

Meh -- I find them a lot easier to follow/participate in than conversations here.

There's also a reason why Romney got 48% of the vote in last year's election.

Yeah, that's my biggest problem with that sit and why I can't get into it much. Can't understand how such a popular site has such an archaic web design.

Politics is a cut throat business.  If he can't handle a bunch of trolls on Reddit, he is in no way prepared to take on any high-powered position where his opponents are going to savage him every chance they get.

To be fair, the smaller subreddits are much easier to deal with. Less comment spam and less sociopaths. God help you if you go on the big ones, though; I have no idea how to deal with those.

Just search the PDF for "[deleted]" and you'll find his stuff.  About 38 entries, but nothing substantial.  He wanted a "liberty-minded" forum and he got reddit.

He didn't answer the question posed to him where he said he was anti government, but pro-abortions. Nor did he answer any other cognitive dissonance issues people brought up.  But that's all just the evil libby libs trying to keep him down, I'm sure.

Fark allows racism, sexism, homophobia and xenophobia regularly. Why not shut it down too?

Reddit is an open community. You get to PICK what you want to see. If you are looking for the ugly side of the internet, you can find it easily. Or, you can be an adult, filter out what you don't want to see, and focus on what you DO want.

Pretty simple. Unfortunately on FARK, the only option is the ignore feature for all the racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic comments.

No. You jumped to that conclusion, and it kind of seems like you are the only one suggesting it. You also labeled all the various critiques of Reddit as "I hate Reddit" comments, so it seems fair to lump all the positive comments about that site into an "I heart Reddit" category.

I'm sure reddit is fine if you've got lots of spare time to kill. But, I just don't have the time or attention span to weed through all the clutter or sort out its structure.

I can pop on fark and read a few interesting stories and/or comment pages when I've got a few minutes here or there. Every time I go to reddit, I'm just too overwhelmed with the disarray to bother.

That's exactly what he was doing.  That's what pretty much all politicians are looking for in their "Town Hall"-style forays.  He wanted mindless pandering, and instead got sharp questioning.  Such things are not conducive to a political campaign.  That's why most "ask the community" political stunts are carefully moderated...

Reddit makes 4Chan appear sophisticated.  If you think the comment system on Reddit is good, your mind will be blown should you ever check out Slashdot.  It's the same thing, just without the ridiculous clunky interface and eye-searing style sheet.  Generally more intelligent conversation over there as well (at least compared to Reddit).

Not saying Fark is great, but it's at least navigable.  Although I will say that the once on-top-of-everything Fark is now the several-days-behind Fark.  This place is pretty much only useful as mild diversion from work these days.  I honestly can't tell you why I still have TF.  I think it's because I'm too lazy to click cancel.  It's all the way over there...

There's "depth" anywhere one decides to look.  The location doesn't matter.  Reddit's interface is pure garbage that makes '90s Geocity pages look like high art.

James!: Wow, Reddit is unreadable.

The only way to read Reddit is through the Alien Blue app for smart phones.

That said, this was so amateurish. There have been a lot of AMAs that have pissed off Reddit, mainly because AMAs, especially those by politicians and celebrities, are handled by PR teams. PR teams which cherry-pick questions and avoid any sort of exchange. They will answer questions, yes, but no follow-ups. Basic shiat. Like at a press conference. This wouldn't have trickled out of Reddit if his staff would have measured the depth of the pool before diving in.

Rwa2play: Dhusk: There's a good reason why Reddit has 20x+ the number of users than Fark.

Reddit has a far broader set of message boards than Fark. Sure, Reddit is going to look like a cesspool if you stick to the front page but Reddit also has boards for discussion of a wider variety of topics than Fark could ever dream of. The default science board puts the Geek tab here on Fark to shame, the subreddits associated with specific games are a gold mine of information.

Fark is okay. Reddit runs the gamut between absolute suck and truly exceptional. If I feel like discussing Buddhism, there's no point coming to Fark but on Reddit I can be assured of something which will be engaging. The same goes for science, games, and a host of other topics.

StubhyGraham: Say all you want about Reddit's terrible layout, but  http://www.reddit.com/r/askhistorians is an awesome sub. Probably the most adult community I've ever experienced on the webs..

The key to reddit is unsubscribing from all the default subs and finding a few less popular ones.   Smaller groups, less idiocy.

Would still like to find something that's a nice balance between Fark (slow updates, but modmins do a good job of filtering out the crap) and Reddit (faster but some junk, and threaded views of comments).

You can find it on there. It's mostly to the tune of "Oh, that site is still up?"

I find it odd some comments here say Reddit is better for news. Reddit just seems so stale to me sometimes, which is weird because it moves faster than Fark because all submissions are visible. It just isn't worth my time to slog through so many repeat submissions. I find some subreddits interesting, but only check them ever two or three days to make sure I get fresh content.

As far as breaking news goes, you're still better off with Fark because there are enough Farkers browsing Reddit to snag information that other people are gleaning from Twitter, police scanners, and, and this happens a lot on Reddit, from eye-witnesses. On Fark, you have a timeline, not a democracy, so it's easier to piece together WTF is happening.

For bonus entertainment be sure to have CNN or something going on in the background as they "break" news that is firing around online for twenty minutes.
