And people complain about Fark? Really?  I remember trying to see Obama's AMA IIRC on Reddit, didn't know what the fark was going on.

I find the whole idea chuckle-worthy.

Someone told this dingbat that Reddit was full of the 'Right' kind of people and he went there expecting accolades and adulation and got a solid kick in the nuts instead.

and after getting savaged for however long he could stand it, he fled in disgrace, deleted his account and tried to pretend as if it was all a big misunderstanding.

Makes me wonder what would happen if one of those loonies showed up on Fark with the same kind of idea.

How to Reddit

1. Be a clueless 20-year-old white male

2. Probably at a community college or commuter school

3. Have a crippling devotion to Gabe Newell

4. Have edgy opinions about pot, eugenics, race relations, feminism, and RON PAUL

5. Enjoy "jailbait" and dropping n-bombs because you're totally not racist, you hate everybody

6. Get really mad about the Internet

Fark allows racism, sexism, homophobia and xenophobia regularly. Why not shut it down too?

Reddit is an open community. You get to PICK what you want to see. If you are looking for the ugly side of the internet, you can find it easily. Or, you can be an adult, filter out what you don't want to see, and focus on what you DO want.

Pretty simple. Unfortunately on FARK, the only option is the ignore feature for all the racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic comments.

I'm sure reddit is fine if you've got lots of spare time to kill. But, I just don't have the time or attention span to weed through all the clutter or sort out its structure.

I can pop on fark and read a few interesting stories and/or comment pages when I've got a few minutes here or there. Every time I go to reddit, I'm just too overwhelmed with the disarray to bother.

2013-08-21 01:18:46 PM

Dr Dreidel: Infernalist: Someone told this dingbat that Reddit was full of the 'Right' kind of people and he went there expecting accolades and adulation and got a solid kick in the nuts instead.

and after getting savaged for however long he could stand it, he fled in disgrace, deleted his account and tried to pretend as if it was all a big misunderstanding.

Which (and this is farking obvious) is the opposite of how it should be. Think about it - would you rather read a bunch of "You're absolutely right!" "Keep doing what you're doing!" and "Give 'em hell!", or would you rather read people challenging his ideas and him intelligently responding?

I realize he's a poTEAto, but still. Was he expecting fawning adulation? Seems like he was more looking for validation than soliciting questions.

That's exactly what he was doing.  That's what pretty much all politicians are looking for in their "Town Hall"-style forays.  He wanted mindless pandering, and instead got sharp questioning.  Such things are not conducive to a political campaign.  That's why most "ask the community" political stunts are carefully moderated...

mediablitz: CPennypacker: mediablitz: LOL. The "I hate reddit" comments are mighty transparent.

Reddit makes 4Chan appear sophisticated.  If you think the comment system on Reddit is good, your mind will be blown should you ever check out Slashdot.  It's the same thing, just without the ridiculous clunky interface and eye-searing style sheet.  Generally more intelligent conversation over there as well (at least compared to Reddit).

Not saying Fark is great, but it's at least navigable.  Although I will say that the once on-top-of-everything Fark is now the several-days-behind Fark.  This place is pretty much only useful as mild diversion from work these days.  I honestly can't tell you why I still have TF.  I think it's because I'm too lazy to click cancel.  It's all the way over there...

There's "depth" anywhere one decides to look.  The location doesn't matter.  Reddit's interface is pure garbage that makes '90s Geocity pages look like high art.

2013-08-21 01:20:22 PM

mediablitz: Obama's Reptiloid Master: Reddit is bad because it supports racism, sexism, and pedophilia, blatantly and openly, and it's users routinely upvote such material.

Given the poster, I think he was being sarcastic.

Kuroshin: Although I will say that the once on-top-of-everything Fark is now the several-days-behind Fark

This is the big bummer for me.  I've been migrating over to reddit mostly because of this.  The news is slow to get onto Fark.

2013-08-21 01:35:33 PM

James!: Wow, Reddit is unreadable.

The only way to read Reddit is through the Alien Blue app for smart phones.

That said, this was so amateurish. There have been a lot of AMAs that have pissed off Reddit, mainly because AMAs, especially those by politicians and celebrities, are handled by PR teams. PR teams which cherry-pick questions and avoid any sort of exchange. They will answer questions, yes, but no follow-ups. Basic shiat. Like at a press conference. This wouldn't have trickled out of Reddit if his staff would have measured the depth of the pool before diving in.

2013-08-21 01:38:50 PM

Rwa2play: Dhusk: There's a good reason why Reddit has 20x+ the number of users than Fark.

There's also a reason why Romney got 48% of the vote in last year's election.

Reddit has a far broader set of message boards than Fark. Sure, Reddit is going to look like a cesspool if you stick to the front page but Reddit also has boards for discussion of a wider variety of topics than Fark could ever dream of. The default science board puts the Geek tab here on Fark to shame, the subreddits associated with specific games are a gold mine of information.

Fark is okay. Reddit runs the gamut between absolute suck and truly exceptional. If I feel like discussing Buddhism, there's no point coming to Fark but on Reddit I can be assured of something which will be engaging. The same goes for science, games, and a host of other topics.

2013-08-21 01:43:06 PM

StubhyGraham: Say all you want about Reddit's terrible layout, but  http://www.reddit.com/r/askhistorians is an awesome sub. Probably the most adult community I've ever experienced on the webs..

The key to reddit is unsubscribing from all the default subs and finding a few less popular ones.   Smaller groups, less idiocy.

Would still like to find something that's a nice balance between Fark (slow updates, but modmins do a good job of filtering out the crap) and Reddit (faster but some junk, and threaded views of comments).

Teufelaffe: Dhusk: There's a good reason why Reddit has 20x+ the number of users than Fark.

There's a good reason AOL had 20x the number of users than Compuserve.
There's a good reason Go Daddy has more domain registrations than Network Solutions.
There's a good reason WalMart has more stores than Target.

Of course, none of those reasons are "because they're better."

Is the answer: "Because dumb people flocculate"?

mediablitz: Cuz I can't say I have EVER seen a "Fark sucks" comment on Reddit, but boy oh boy is the Reddit hate obvious (and pretty juvenile) here.

You can find it on there. It's mostly to the tune of "Oh, that site is still up?"

I find it odd some comments here say Reddit is better for news. Reddit just seems so stale to me sometimes, which is weird because it moves faster than Fark because all submissions are visible. It just isn't worth my time to slog through so many repeat submissions. I find some subreddits interesting, but only check them ever two or three days to make sure I get fresh content.

As far as breaking news goes, you're still better off with Fark because there are enough Farkers browsing Reddit to snag information that other people are gleaning from Twitter, police scanners, and, and this happens a lot on Reddit, from eye-witnesses. On Fark, you have a timeline, not a democracy, so it's easier to piece together WTF is happening.

For bonus entertainment be sure to have CNN or something going on in the background as they "break" news that is firing around online for twenty minutes.

I like both Reddit and Fark.  I prefer Fark for comments and Reddit for content that I would not get here.  The key as someone else said is to avoid the default subs (if you're looking for a conversation) as they are horrid.

On the other hand you can get to see how nonsensical some subreddits are, here's a thread showing as such:

http://np.reddit.com/r/counting/comments/uuikz/lets_count_to_infinit y_ by_1s/

2013-08-21 03:30:29 PM
Somethingawful is a dwarf of its former self, but it still has 7-10,000 active users on its forum at any time.  Fark runs about triple that right now, based on google trends. Fark has a much higher lurker/poster ratio, so it feels more intimate, even though it's bigger. I outgrew SA's frontpage years ago, but I still get a lot of mileage out of their forums.

What's interesting is that even though reddit has blown up, it's still only gets about 70% of the traffic as 2005 Fark.

I've always liked the paywall aspect of Somethingawful. A lot of Indie Game developers still use its games section as a springboard for ideas and debugging (Project Eternity, Dungeonmans, Starbound). I think the smaller user base and the high level of moderation makes the site a lot friendlier for people like that to share their ideas.

Fark pretty much raised me though, and I've read it nearly every single day since I was 16. Fark is my newspaper, except there are always people in the comments that have way more to add. In spite of the trolls, there is still some great debate that goes on here.

Reddit is basically turning into the Google of message boards, and there is a ton of value in that, but it's not what I'm looking for in a website.

I like that Fark is a pretty unified community, whereas with Reddit and Somethingawful, everyone has their own pockets of the site that they visit. Fark is never going to win the 13-24 bracket, but it was never designed to. This is still one of the largest adult communities on the internet, even though a lot of us act like children sometimes.

By the way, Ron Paul is doing an AMA tomorrow at 4:00 p.m.

there certainly is a lot of bitterness towards reddit here.... Do I sense a bit of jealousy? Reddit certainly has its faults (It seems very easy to whip its users into personal crusades and it's only a step above Facebook in terms slacktivism.), but I generally prefer it to Fark if only because there's more to it.

I guess i kind of feel like this place is often less adult and more "Curmudgeonly old fart who biatches constantly." Sometimes it's fun to biatch, but sometimes it really feels like no one really enjoys anything here.

Oddly enough, I prefer the politics tab here to r/politics. R/politics is a cesspool. I made the mistake of posting there once and immediately got like 80 responses all saying the exact same thing.

2013-08-21 04:02:37 PM
Reddit's fine if you ditch the default subs and find niches that cover what you're into.  I follow /r/boardgames, /r/tall, and a few others that are off the beaten path, and they're very, very solid online communities.

Sure, there's part that's full of idiots, pedos, MRAs, and racists, but they get called out pretty hard by the other part that thinks that has no place, and you don't see them much in the non-primary subs.

I'm amused by the hate from Farkers over things like site design (Fark has changed how much since 2001?  Slightly cleaner look, tabs for types of articles, and uh...).  I mean, we only just got a WYSIWYG comment box last year!

Now get back to tearing this guy a new one.  That's far more entertaining.

I post mostly in Politics here, but I never even read /r/politics.  It'd make me kill something within minutes.
Here, politics discussion is mostly hinged, with a collection of paid trolls that come and go over the months/years that everyone shouts down.  There... yikes.

But then, how many people read /r/politics vs. how many read FARK Politics?  Much larger audience, so the 30% confirmed retarded portion of the population will be much more noticeable

/also probably more people will bother to pay trolls on a well-known site like Reddit than a relative backwater like FARK

Fark, Reddit, Daily Show, Colbert = infromed!

Reddit is like the general population, there are a plethora of knuckleheads and kids tasting freedom, but there are some seriously smart folks too. But it does take some time to learn your way around, most of the subreddits aren't even listed. Just yesterday I read a thread  about Cherenkov radiation and several people knew their stuff. Type anything you might be in to into the search and you will find out it's pretty common. You can just click the random button a few times and you'll see something interesting.

Just don't click on anything labeled NSFL or ever go to a subreddit called Spacedicks (you already went didn't you)

I think the biggest thing missing from r/politics that's present in the Politics Tab is a sense of humor. It feels like everyone who posts in r/politics is way overly serious about every topic. It feels like all responses there are someone chastising someone else.

this place is also much better once the paid trolls (and those who respond to them) are blocked.

I love Fark, I started going to Reddit because one day a "biatch about Reddit thread" was so annoying I went out of spite.  I like both.  /r/talesfromretail can be pretty good, a couple of authors I like are on Reddit and I've gotten to ask them a couple of things.  Who isn't down for the occasional .gif of a guy getting hit in the nuts?

But Fark has that certain spiteful, seething hilarity in the comments threads that I've come to count on so much.

They may have bullied the media to abide by their arbitrary rule of "fairness" where every Republican criticism must be counterbalanced by a criticism of liberals, but the Internet is not going to play by their rules.

Projection, cognitive dissonance, hypocrisy, etc.  That's their usual MO.

Also:  Anybody want to make a friendly wager that one of these morons on the RW will call to ban the internet?  Frankly, (to refer to a Bill Simmons theory) the RW entered the Tyson Zone a LONG time ago.

Invisible Pedestrian: Would still like to find something that's a nice balance between Fark (slow updates, but modmins do a good job of filtering out the crap) and Reddit (faster but some junk, and threaded views of comments).

You're missing the thing that makes reddit far superior to Fark, and it's not the "threaded" commenting structure, it's the fact that upvoting brings relevant/funny/germane responses to the top and relegates the stupidity to the bottom of the feed.

Sure, in some subs the stupidest stuff is voted to the top, but if you're hanging around in /r/pics or /r/adviceanimals you deserve what you get.

Having to wade through thread-shiatting morons who sit and wait to poop in the boobies around here is what makes me love going back to reddit.

MacEnvy: Obama's Reptiloid Master: sxacho: I don't even know how to Reddit. I tried but it makes no sense to me.

How to Reddit

1. Be a clueless 20-year-old white male

2. Probably at a community college or commuter school

3. Have a crippling devotion to Gabe Newell

4. Have edgy opinions about pot, eugenics, race relations, feminism, and RON PAUL

5. Enjoy "jailbait" and dropping n-bombs because you're totally not racist, you hate everybody

6. Get really mad about the Internet

Did reddit fark your mom or something? You seem to have some sort of obsession.

Well, honestly, who *hasn't*?

\had to go there

StubhyGraham: Say all you want about Reddit's terrible layout, but  http://www.reddit.com/r/askhistorians is an awesome sub. Probably the most adult community I've ever experienced on the webs..

One reason that r/ is so good, is that the mods are vicious. AskScience is getting real good also.
