I stayed in Mexico City once in the apartment of an extented family member's.  They had a brick hanging from the ceil by rope which they used for earthquake detection.  I was told that if the brick starts swinging to head for the door.

Back in Mexico City when I was taking a Restoration course, there was a sign at the door that said: If there's an earthquake during class, don't run. The earthquake's also happening outside.

Sense of humor, it helps.

Well, they did make Gay Marriage legal in Mexico City, and also pot (in small doses, and you can't grow, buy or sell), and they're trying to make adoption for gay couples legal (Or they already did, I don't know), and the fun thing is, the day after it happened, not only did the Catholic Church did a strong stern letter against the decision, as well as the right wing, but the rest of the states in the country suddenly reinforced marriage as a straight thing.

It doesn't matter. Mexico City's built on the former Lake Texcoco and when an earthquake hits the Pacific Coast the shockwaves hit the lake, causing liquefaction and shaking the city as if the epicenter were right underneath.

/the '85 quake's epicenter was on the coast
//damage was worse in Mexico City, 220 miles away

That is the problem. Have you ever seen a committee do something in a timely and/or efficient manner?

I did some research to answer a couple of questions.

One, Acapulco is far enough away from the US that knock-on earthquakes need not concern you.

Two, there have been 14 quakes in the region so far this year, of which this is the largest. They are centered around Acapulco more or less. This is one of two quakes today, three this week, five this month, and 14 this year.

There may be some small aftershocks but I wouldn't expect a big quake based on what little I know.

6.1 is moderate. The scale is logarithmic, so a 7.1 would be about ten times stronger, while an 8.1, which would be a very serious quake, would be a hundred times stronger.

This quake is much stronger than the few small earthquakes I have experienced, which cracked the odd wall or chimney at worst, but made an audible noise and rattled the cupboards in the kitchen.
