Hell yea!  Before my video card crapped out I played that game all the time.  Of course I mostly got shot down by the people that spent a crapload of money for fancy planes,  but I still got my share of kills.

It's the crew skill that gets ya. The premium planes aren't all that.

Anyway, I've been having much fun with this game lately, but one of the best PC games? I don't know about that.

So DOOM is coming to platforms again? Or Wolfenstein? What about Quake?

Now that I watch the trailer. I never played that but I assumed it was one of those three or X-Wing / TIE Fighter.

RockofAges: World of Tanks. The antithesis of the Call of Duty set. Patience, strategy, skill, necessitous teamwork. Free. Not perfect by any means, but a very unique thing.

Normally I don't buy into the conspiracy theory that Fark straight up hates Xbox stuff, but World of Tanks is actually coming out for the 360 later this year and I agree, is a much better game than Warthunder.  A noob at Warthunder (as people above indicate regarding crew skills) is going to get rocked by anyone with their crew skilled up.  In WoT, even a brand new player who spends no money can have a chance to survive.  Definitely a good F2P game example for others to follow.

Also, Warthunder still isn't even officially "on" the PC since it is still in beta and only has aircraft (no tanks or ships yet).

I did just fine my first couple days playing.  I completely that crew skill gives a noticeable advantage (and that they're hoping you'll notice and then break down and spend some money to speed that process up), but it's not THAT extreme.

I've never owned a sony video game system before but PS4 and Vita look mighty tempting. Having had an xbox and xb360 the XBO does nothing for me.

Sure a PC handles most of my gaming needs but PS4 exclusives look fun.

More importantly, where are the burning bodies from the large scale fire bombing?

Bombing in War Thunder is kinda meh.  For one, you'll pretty much never get a group of bombers together, and the friendly fighters often give zero farks, and they become considerably easier targets for fighters (especially in 'arcade').  But mostly, there's just a lack of Big Targets to bomb.  No factories, etc.  Just tanks and ships, the enemy airfield and the occasional structure like a bridge or something in some types of games.

I still go on bombing runs and sometimes have fun, but it'd be nicer if you had something interesting for big high altitude bombers to actually go after.

Really though? You can at least pretend the controller is a flight yoke. All it's missing is feedback. It makes way more sense than mouse/keyboard.

It makes FAR more sense.  That's why the first time I played War Thunder I hooked up my flight stick.  It was horrible.

Pay to win?  Pass.  There are very few things in the world of video games that are as big a turn-off as Freemium and P2W.

If the beta is any indication, the xbox world of tanks is going to be terrible. I can't stand how it controls, and this from a guy who prefers to play an fps on his couch on a console.

Love it on PC though. I've logged around eight thousand battles and just recently acquired my first tier ten. I think it is free to play done right- it really isn't pay to win, but pay to grind a whole lot less.

Plants vs Zombies 2 freemium wasn't bad. I was able to beat the game without spending a penny and considering I would have paid $5 like I did for the first one it was a deal.

It is very possible to be Free to Play without becoming Pay to Win.  The key is to have things like inventory expansions and cosmetics be the only things that can't be acquired via just playing.  You can sell weapons too, just don't sell anything that can't also be easily acquired via the normal playing of the game.

For instance, Valve has this formula (how to be F2P without being P2W) perfected for Team Fortress 2 and Dota 2.

The only things that can ONLY be acquired for money that I know of off-hand are a few planes that are really no better than any others, and a couple of the last 'crew slots' to have more planes ready to go in arcade.  Most of them are actually already in the game, but you'd get to play them as another country and with an XP boost or something (I think).  As for the crew slots, I'm not sure I ever run out of planes anymore before a mission ends in arcade, and I've not bought any.  I guess if you're REALLY bad, it could be an advantage.

2013-08-21 12:17:34 PM
"Most of them" being the "premium planes".  Mornings and English are incompatible.  But those "premium planes" aren't really better in any sense than the free ones.

Geotpf: It is very possible to be Free to Play without becoming Pay to Win.

While true, all the games I've seen that are like this are noticeably more grindy.  You don't  have to pay real money for X, Y, and Z. But you'll grind for it until the Sun burns out.

The mindset comes across in the game and it's a major turn-off.

Thinking of building a gaming PC instead of buying a new console, i've only got 600 i can spend. Does anyone here know where i could learn to build a PC and whether or not 600 would be enough to build a decent one?

If you aren't opposed to reading a bunch of different suggestions reddit.com/r/buildapc is a great starting point. Here is a fairly recent thread where someone with a $650 budget asked the same question.

That's pretty much the opposite of my experience.  Fighting a tank a couple tiers higher than me in world of tanks means i might not even be able to damage it.  Fighting a plane a couple tiers higher in war thunder usually means they're a little bit faster, or have extra cannons or something.

600 should be ok, I guess.   $800-1200 seems to be the sweet spot.  You aren't screwing any parts over, and you can get an SSD to avoid load times.

Maybe not even that.  There are some rank 3-4 planes that can fly fairly comfortably and well against rank 9-11 opponents.
