(BBC)   The Ashes may be won, but that's no reason for anyone to relax. England will want to make a statement ahead of the return series, while for Australia the goal is to avoid the humiliation of a 4-0 defeat. It's Day 1 of the final Ashes test   (bbc.co.uk) divider line 29

Kerrigan is 0-28 from 2 overs?? Why did we bring him up again?

Watson really going after the debutants - scoring more than a run a ball at number three on the opening morning of a test. How often do you see that?

England - and Woakes and Kerrigan in particular - need to improve dramatically, otherwise they're going to effectively only have three bowlers for the rest of the match.

There are a lot of words in the headline and comments that I recognize but together in that order make no sense.

Good morning, US cricket-watching Farkers.  I'm glad to see Punchy got out so easily.

Not a chance of getting Watson LBW all morning?  Did he learn to keep his fat leg out of the way, or are the bowlers not doing their jobs?

He got away with one that Hawkeye said was umpire's call, so would have stayed out if it had been given and reviewed. But with the trash that's been bowled at him since, it's not been difficult

Rogers gone! We needed that one after they'd racked up the 100 partnership.

This is still going on? And people say baseball is slow

In baseball you can't hit the batter in the head like Broad just did to Watson. Sure I'm an Aussie, but as an ex-opening bowler that's a sight that I'm a big fan of.

Warne still finding ways to biatch about Cook. Geez, man. Let it the fark go.

Sure you can, pitchers do it all the time, and it has a minimal impact on the game if you time it correctly.

Clarke down.  Even with his bell rung, Watson looks steady.  Can #5 and #6 put on partnerships with Watson?

Doesn't result in a walk? Doesn't result in fines? Doesn't result in suspensions? Never causes an ejection?

In cricket you can break a batsman's hip and get him out at the same time.

Wait, I thought there were 5 matches / tests in this particular competition?  Why would the humiliation be 4 - 0 and not 5 - 0, whats the current "score"?

You can have draws in cricket, after days and days of playing?  Well then.

I believe it's more common in Test Cricket (which The Ashes is) than in other forms. If you really want to see the big bats swing and results more common, check out T20. I prefer Test, but I still think T20 is a blast.

They lost quite a bit of time to rain in that match.

Here's hoping Watson gets the jitters as he edges closer to 200. Might be the best England can hope for a wicket before close of play.

England got Watson.  Now very aggressive fielding in the last few hours of the day to see if they can get another wicket.

And that's stumps on Day 1.  Australia 307/4.  They have to be pretty happy.  And WTF was England thinking with their bowling selection, unless they have basically written off this match as a training and evaluation exercise?

Good day for the Aussies for sure. Would like to see Smith get to 100 and someone else chip in with 50+. That should push Australia towards 500 again.

Possibly. Although I did like what I saw from Woakes. With some more experience he could become quite good.
