beb004: Mikey1969: Abe Vigoda's Ghost: It sounds like these cops were out of their juristiction

Where does it "sound like" that? I guess that you don't understand words like "Sheriff" and "County".

I understand "County" and "Sheriff" pretty well. I live in Maricopa County and it is no where near the border! If a Maricopa deputy was on the border he was way out of his jurisdiction!

Good, then if you live in Maricopa County you would understand that Gila Bend (where this took place) is inside the county.

Doc Daneeka: Shootouts between Sheriff Joe's Derp Brigade and those asshole Minutemen militias.

Yeah, I'm not really seeing any downside here.

As long as they go out to the desert and shoot each other away from normal people, sounds like a win-win all around.

The whole thing sounds like the set up for a Coen Brothers movie.

He wasn't ON the border. He was outside of Gila Bend, which is well inside the border of Maricopa County, but is also a prime spot for drug and human traffickers to hop out of the desert and hop onto trucks heading East and West on I-8. If you don't understand how close the southern border of the county is to the Mexican border, you could at least be bothered to look it up on a map before you wandered in here.

Of course, you also threadjacked or outed one of your alts, since you aren't the person who I was responding to in the first place.

If a cop is outside of his jurisdiction and doing something he shouldn't be doing when you shoot him, is it still considered to be shooting a cop?

Depends on the state. Indiana says "no," but they tend to be the exception.

Mikey1969: thurstonxhowell: Maricopa County is not a border county. Since it is not a border county, they cannot see an illegal border crossing happen when they are in Maricopa County. Given that information, I have to question what these farksticks' game plan is. Brandish their weapons at any one who might be Mexican?

The deputies plan was equally stupid. Drive out to the desert and honk the horn of a truck loaded with guys "clearly marked with sheriff's patches"? Genius plan, guys. Keep at it, I'm sure one day you'll find someone besides old guys playing vigilante dress-up dumb enough to fall enough for that.

No, it's not a border county. What it IS is a county that includes a major smuggling corridor that has a US Interstate running through it, 20-30 miles from the edge of the county boundary, and a prime spot for drug and human smuggling couriers to just pull to the side of the road, load up, and be anywhere they want within hours.

It's also not exactly a high use recreation area, since it is mile after mile after mile after mile of ugly, blasted desert, this isn't even the "majestic beauty" kind of desert, or the "hidden springs in the mountains" kind of desert. As someone mentioned, NOBODY goes there if they don't have to, it sucks. hell, I can't for the life of me figure out why people even live in Gila Bend. Except that they grow a shiat-ton of shrimp out there, apparently.

Exactly.  And why is there such a porous corridor there?  The Tohono O'odham reservation's northern border is in southwest Maricopa County.  The reservation extends to the Mexican border.  And the Tohono O'odham consider land south of the border to be "culturally" theirs as well. Border enforcement by the tribal police is meager, if at all.  U.S. Border Patrol does not patrol on reservation land.  But, they sure do heavily patrol the periphery of the reservation.  Thus an effective border is indeed in Maricopa County on the edge of the res.

http://pulitzercenter.org/reporting/clash-border-tohomo-o%E2%80%99od ha m-nation-migration-Mexico-Arizona-Native-Americans

I learned all this about a month ago when photographing some Monsoon storms on that reservation.  Border patrol had a word with me as soon as I exited the res.

Sock Ruh Tease: Mexican Man Arrested For Mass Murder
Police Officers, Minutemen Found Dead Near Border

PHOENIX - A Mexican man claims he did not murder anyone after he was arrested for being spotted near over two dozen bodies near the Arizona-Mexico border, authorities say.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio said that the man was crossing into the country illegally and had killed about 30 police officers and minutemen, whose bodies were found in separate groups in a portion of the barren lands between Arizona and Mexico. Shell casings, empty clips, Glocks, and AK-47s riddled the area around the corpses, suggesting that "the Mexican man had gotten into a firefight with the two groups, who were obviously working together to catch this madman," Arpaio said.

Forensic ballistics reports were "lost, and we are trying to recover them," Arpaio said.

The Mexican man had only this to say: "Me llamo Nestor de la Cruz. Tengo mi ciudadanía el año pasado. No he matado a nadie. Acabo de ver los cadáveres y traté de informar a la policía lo más rápido posible," which according to a Maricopa County Sheriff Department-supplied translator means "I used to assassinate politicians for drug cartels, so 30 gringos with guns was easy work for me." Arpaio says that the man will be dealt with appropriately. "I've got a prison tent with Jose Lopez written all over it," he said before dismissing the press conference. "There is much work to be done now, if you'll excuse me."

A representative of the Arizona Minutemen for Border Protection said to us anonymously that they will also be doing all they can to keep Mexicans from killing them in the future, and warned against Mexicans dressed as police officers in order to get through the border and into America. "Those Mexicans are sneaky. It is their nature," he told us. "We are just trying to protect the country and the jobs from these smelly, sleazy [not-racist term involving the moistness of the opposite of a front]. It's not about race, it's about safety."

http://www.patchsupply.com/Police-and-Sheriff-Front-and-Back-Patches -w ith-Velcro.html

That's one website out of a thousand.

Thousands of people impersonate the police every year.

Not only that, you did give this guy probable cause to believe you were a dangerous smuggler or drug dealer, because that's exactly what you were trying to mimic.  You went out there to convince people you were a smuggler or drug dealer.  When you do that, you're going to run that risk.

Dear halB,

Brandishing a weapon is against the law because it is a life threatening act and the deputies or any other citizen would and are within their rights to fire on someone brandishing in self defense.

Doing research is hard:

http://www.azleg.gov/FormatDocument.asp?inDoc=/ars/13/03883.htm&Title = 13&DocType=ARS

Even out-of-state Peace Officers have "jurisdiction" under certain circumstances:

http://www.azleg.gov/FormatDocument.asp?inDoc=/ars/13/03832.htm&Title = 13&DocType=ARS

Several states also grant unlimited "jurisdiction" to all peace officers within that state (Oregon and Washington both allow it).

Stupidly easy to access information and some folks just refuse to bother.

Graffito: thurstonxhowell: and, while PA usually goes blue, I'm betting Shanksville does not.

What's your reasoning there?  I don't know much about Shanksville except that it is rural, and rural areas often go red.
As far as 9/11 goes, that was on W's watch and we have had no foreigners attack us on home soil since then.

I was born and grew up about 10 miles from where Flight 93 went down. My Aunt lived 2 miles from the crash site.

My parents were lifelong Republicans, but in general, I think the area was reasonably mixed. The folks seemed to me to be fairly intelligent, friendly, and tolerant.

I grew up Republican, but it's been over 2 decades since I voted for a Repub, with only one exception - a local rep who obviously cares about the welfare of all his constituents. I live in the DC suburbs now and tear the GOTP a new one every time the send me a survey.

Anyway, my corner of PA really did seem like a Norman Rockwell upbringing to this farm kid.
