That's one website out of a thousand.

Thousands of people impersonate the police every year.

Not only that, you did give this guy probable cause to believe you were a dangerous smuggler or drug dealer, because that's exactly what you were trying to mimic.  You went out there to convince people you were a smuggler or drug dealer.  When you do that, you're going to run that risk.

Yes the sheriff gave that civilian probable cause to think he was a drug dealer, so that pretend cop out trying to do the job of the real cop, and instead getting in the way was totally in the right. It makes perfect sense, you go out and prevent cops from being able to do there jobs all the while complaining that you wouldn't have to be out pretending to be a cop if they'd just do their jobs.

I think subby got it right with GOP civil war. The derp is strong in this thread.

BitwiseShift: even though Phoenix is about 100 miles from the border

Unfortunately for you, Maricopa County is just a little bigger than Phoenix, so it's closer to 30 miles from the border... Sheriffs enforce over the ENTIRE county, not just the cesspool parts like Phoenix. Not that Joe isn't normally a shmuck, you've just picked a weak position to base your argument on.

https://maps.google.com/maps?q=maricopa+count y&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=0x87 2b5d0c0572a2ff:0x4aec1cd17f2c4880,Maricopa,+AZ&gl=us&ei=M9MUUsW_O8aU2A XFpoGIAg&ved=0CKABELYD

Looks like Maricopa County does extend way south from Phoenix and Gila Bend is certainly inside the county. Still not the border, and about 70 miles south, near Interstate 8. So, it's Joe's problem.

Texas had a problem a while back with some dudes from Kansas or Nebraska or Missouri claiming to be heirs to the Republic of Texas. They holed up in the Davis Mountains in the desert in the 600 miles stretch between San Antonio and El Paso. They were hurting the local people. A bunch of bad asses playing post Apocalyptic war lords in the desert. The wanted another Waco, even if they had to steal women and children from the locals to get the body count up for their compound.

What sheriff doesn't welcome the fame of minimum wage TV anchors claiming they'll show the Next Waco right after these messages?

There are actually some great national parks in the general area of Gila Bend, once you realize that a short drive is a 100 mile round trip. Scare away the tourists and you're doing your state a great economic favor.

We're starting to get a lot of stories of their civil unrest. This is just a part of the ramp-up we have recently hit to get the derp into the headlines at full force.

Hey maybe those are good reasons that non-police shouldn't be going on armed vigilantly patrols.

One flaw in your argument: The militia guy is not law enforcement. He has no business trying to prevent a non-violent crime, particularly by using the threat of violence. Also, it would be extremely stupid of him to pull that shiat with actual drug smugglers, who would in fact kill him and his entire family for pulling a stunt like that.

I would be. There's no PR value in that. He's still a cop. Why do you ask? These cops were inside of their jurisdiction. A simple search for "Maricopa County" and the ability to read a map will show you just how much of that area near Gila Bend is inside the county's borders.

thurstonxhowell: Maricopa County is not a border county. Since it is not a border county, they cannot see an illegal border crossing happen when they are in Maricopa County. Given that information, I have to question what these farksticks' game plan is. Brandish their weapons at any one who might be Mexican?

The deputies plan was equally stupid. Drive out to the desert and honk the horn of a truck loaded with guys "clearly marked with sheriff's patches"? Genius plan, guys. Keep at it, I'm sure one day you'll find someone besides old guys playing vigilante dress-up dumb enough to fall enough for that.

No, it's not a border county. What it IS is a county that includes a major smuggling corridor that has a US Interstate running through it, 20-30 miles from the edge of the county boundary, and a prime spot for drug and human smuggling couriers to just pull to the side of the road, load up, and be anywhere they want within hours.

It's also not exactly a high use recreation area, since it is mile after mile after mile after mile of ugly, blasted desert, this isn't even the "majestic beauty" kind of desert, or the "hidden springs in the mountains" kind of desert. As someone mentioned, NOBODY goes there if they don't have to, it sucks. hell, I can't for the life of me figure out why people even live in Gila Bend. Except that they grow a shiat-ton of shrimp out there, apparently.

2013-08-21 11:40:09 AM

thurstonxhowell: Since the deputies committed no crime by flashing their headlights and honking the horn, neither of those two conditions was satisfied.

Of course, they(Arpaio's deputies) were pulling Brown people over for similar "violations" while doing their sweeps, so it COULD be seen as karma coming back to bite 'em in the ass...

Because of people from OUTSIDE of Arizona. Snowbirds can vote. I think they only have to be in the state 3 months of the year(Maybe 4) to vote in Maricopa County elections. What happens, is your Great Aunt Betty up in Moosefart, Minnesota watches Fox News all day long, hearing about how "scary" all of the big cities are. She comes to Az in the winter, because nothing beats having snow like the same farking weather day in and day out... When she comes to Mesa, Sun City, Gilbert, Phoenix, wherever, she notices that she hasn't been carjacked, beaten, robbed, raped, or kidnapped, so she makes the ASSumption that it is because the County Sheriff is doing his job, when in reality, he has about 50,000 felony warrants gathering dust and his department ignored more than 400 sex crimes in El Mirage while their boss made it in front of every news camera he could.

She casts her vote, goes back to the motorhome and has some mimosas, and when March comes along, she goes back home, with not a single thought about what might have happened as a result of her misinformed voting practices.

That's how he keeps getting elected. Hundreds of thousands of clueless blue-hairs.

I see this as a good argument for the cops to be there. The Rambo wannabes were just setting themselves up to wind up in a shallow desert grave.

FlashHarry: Richard Malley, 49, was heavily armed with two others dressed in camouflage Saturday night along Interstate 8 near Gila Bend, a known drug-trafficking corridor in the desert about 70 miles southwest of Phoenix, when he confronted the deputy who was on patrol conducting surveillance, authorities said.

these sick assholes are going out there in the hopes that they'll be able to kill a mexican. that's the only reason they're there - to play soldier boy with live ammunition and live targets.

Yeah, I'm not so sure that's the only motivation the militiamen may have. It seems to me from the scenario in the article, that the militia intended to detain, or otherwise hold prisoner a suspected drug smuggler. So, it would be a fine, fine payday to detain a drug smuggler, and take possession of their cargo - whatever that may be. If it was a scenario where the smuggler was dealing in humans, the militiamen could have taken possession of them as well. Either the militiamen could be Arial Castros, or Don Corleones... they could be out there, not to simply shoot Mexicans, but to profit by pirating the smuggled cargo.

Well, to begin with, outside of Phoenix, none of your buddies lives in Maricopa County, they DO have more than one county in AZ, after all... Then there are the factors I listed in my other post.

Yeah, I've thought the whole minuteman movement was pants on head from the beginning. Then again, I've talked to some off the people who have been hit by all of the illegals crossing their land. And this was in the late 90's, early 00's, when this was first starting to be a 'thing', some of these people have a valid argument. Not that the minuteman morons have any clue as to what they're doing and why, but I can at least see why people are pissed.

I understand "County" and "Sheriff" pretty well. I live in Maricopa County and it is no where near the border! If a Maricopa deputy was on the border he was way out of his jurisdiction!
