Giood luck with that.

The production cost iof marijuana is around 23 cents a pound, not even that much if Mexican labor is used.

Price a product too high, and you subsidize smuggling.

Just ask anyone from new York, where cigarettes are $18.50 a pack.

thurstonxhowell: Yes please: Business owners will invariably pass that cost on to consumers. And while you may be willing to pay more, others will not. And I'm sure even you have your limit. You've said you'd pay twice as much... what about three times? Ten times?

You're right, I have my limit. I don't know what you're trying to prove now, though. I thought you were slinging insults based on potheads whining about it being "regulated and taxed like alcohol". If they're increasing the price 10x just through taxes and regulation, then that is nothing like alcohol.

At that price, and in the absence of laws or employer drug tests, I'd grow.

Actually, that's a lot like alcohol. Between regulatory fees, permits, and taxes, the cost of alcohol is increased severalfold. If it were completely unregulated a gallon of liquor would potentially cost less than a gallon of milk. Of course, people are willing to pay more for premium products, but the production and distribution costs would be tiny.

Girion47: mama2tnt: thurstonxhowell: I, for one, would be willing to pay twice the current street value of weed if it meant being able to buy it in a shop without fear of arrest.

One of the monsters started buying and drinking alcohol because he can't afford what he prefers.
/I'm all for legalization, taxing, whatever, because if it were legal where we are, I'd farking buy it FOR him (and me) because I've always preferred it to alcohol's effects.
//But it has to be legal. I want all of us smokers and smoker-wanna-bes to stay out of prison.

The prison part isn't what I worry about, I want it to be legalized so that on the job drug tests and clearances no longer depend on if you had smoked it or not.

Not necessarily, Tobacco is perfectly legal and there are already companies that outright refuse to hire smokers, including two hospitals and the city of Delray Beach, both in Fark's favorite state. Just because it's legal is no guarantee that it won't keep you from getting hired.

I pay $175 per oz of medical grade herb here in Colorado. In Ohio, that same oz would go for $400+.

I was just in Glenwood Springs (outside Aspen) last week and it was $300 for 2 ounces at a legal dispensary... just an FYI. Also, the Apothecary in Aspen was AWESOME... their business will explode in January

$175-$200 is not expensive. The same ounce I get in Colorado would be $400+ in Ohio.

In washington state anything more than  10 bucks a grams is pure BS. I can get bad ass shiat at the D for that. I refuse to pay anymore than 10 bucks a gram. If the states think they are going to get more than that they might as well just be sending people back to the streets to get it.

I'm sorry to hear that. States need to step up so people can get relief and help.

Because weed is the way Americans are introduced to the metric system of masses. Want to find the stoners in a group? Ask out loud how many grams are in an eighth of an ounce. Just say in an 'eighth.' They'll know. So will the scientists, but the stoners will out themselves.

Also you can just ask someone if they smoke.

If their response is "Cigarettes?".

They smoke weed.

Wait, doesn't the Colorado law allow for personal grow?  If so what's the big deal it's basically a convenience tax.  That's what is stupid about the WA law as it applies to the feds, they still outlaw personal grow so if the feds come down on the licensed sales it's game over, whereas in CO they can shut down the licensed sales but people can still grow.

I was kind of amused at the whole licensing thing because all of the people in the government licensing and authorizing sales could be brought up on RICO charges.  That's why full out legalization should have been the plan but it had to be sold as a revenue generator because freedom isn't free I guess.

Many of the scientists I know are stoners. It's actually pretty common, at least everywhere I've been.

GoodOmens: One of the biggest revenue generators for the mafia is tax evasion on cigarettes because NY's cigarette taxes are so high. Think about that for a second....

Part of that is because smokers have been pariahs for so long that getting your cancersticks from your local weed dealer or mob goon isn't much worse than behind the counter at the store. The taxes on alcohol are as high or higher, but that doesn't stop it from being insanely popular because it's the recreational drug of choice in America right now, and in most places you can pick it up anywhere, bring it to the counter and ring it up like any other food or drink. Cig buyers get the stink-eye. If the attitude of shame didn't exist then only the poorest and seediest would bother with bootleggers.

It won't be long until weed is sold next to the cigs in most states, behind the counter and largely made by the same mass manufacturers. I predict it'll never be as socially acceptable as beer, and you'll still have to go to the same specialty smoke shops for bud once the novelty of legal good stuff wears off, just like rolling tobacco now.

IRQ12: Wait, doesn't the Colorado law allow for personal grow? If so what's the big deal it's basically a convenience tax.

Isn't the same true of alcohol and tobacco in most places? Lots of regulations are convenience taxes.

But but wait, all the potheads told us to legalize it and tax it we would make so much money, now that its come true their bloodshot eyes well up in tears? Pussies.
