What IRS Scandal?

FTFA: Making matters slightly more amusing, the same new materials show the IRS had a "Be On the Look Out" warning that called for heightened scrutiny to "ACORN successor" organizations.

It doesn't matter that there is no "scandal" at all, and that everything was above board and legitimate.  GOP-TV did what they wanted to do.  In the minds of all Republicans, the words "IRS," "Benghazi," and "ACORN" automatically trigger the word "scandal."  Like Pavlov's dogs drooling at the sound of a bell, Republicans have these words imprinted, and they will stay imprinted.  We will be hearing about the "IRS scandal," "Benghazi-gate," and "ACORN trying to steal the elections" in 2014 and 2016, I guarantee it.

If you ask a Republican for details about these "scandals," you'll get a blank stare, but they are all sure, deep in their hearts, that there must have been something truly scandalous.  After all, FoxNews said there was, and they're fair and balanced.

J Edgar Hoover hated John Steinbeck so much he had him audited by the IRS every year.

Everyone but the fruitloops knew this from day 1.

They were doing their job. Auditing groups that needed to be audited. And frankly, they didn't do a very good job because most of these groups were very obviously political contributors.

I hear Valerie Jarrett told the Marines to stand down from saving the Coptic Christians.  Sounds legit.  If Marines are known for anything, it's blindly taking orders from a civilian they have never heard of.

I'm sure this will get the same amount of media coverage that was given to this "scandal" when it broke a few months ago.

Maybe that's the scandal: the IRS is politicized. This seems like a kind of a scandal. Of course, the rank and file angry about that are embedded in a GOP mind-context that makes our head spin, but it's still true.

By the numbers, conservative groups were targeted at much higher rates than liberal groups.  This is good news for anyone who wants to be President...the public is so scandal weary, they don't even care when a real one comes along.......so any future president will pretty much be able to do what he wants with impunity.  He will have to do something like murder a baby on national television before the public will get behind an impeachment.

Could that be because the conservative groups have more weasels who think the rules don't apply to them?

But I'm sure it's still real to you.

By the numbers, liberal groups were denied more than conservative ones. Because zero conservative groups were denied.

In 1990 Nelson's assets were seized by the Internal Revenue Service, which claimed that he owed US $32,000,000

Who had held the White House for about a decade?
So are you admitting that when the Republicans are in charge they will use the IRS to punish real or imagined enemies?

Because the Obama Administration has never fired anyone in the heat of a scandal only to have it turn out they did nothing wrong. Just ask Shirley Sherrod!

and Louis Lerner plead the 5th and won't provide information until she's granted immunity?

If Darrell Issa wants honest answers, he'd best start asking honest questions.

The mass media in this country is in the pocket of the corporate right and has already managed to push the bullshiat about the IRS so that it's embedded into the public consciousness. It doesn't matter how many coffins it is buried in; as far as a large segment of the country is concerned, "Obama used the IRS to persecute his political enemies". Period.

2013-08-20 07:47:43 PM
My father-in-law won't shut up about this.  He claims his "historical society's" 503 application was denied because they had the word "patriot" in the name.  Nevermind it was a Teabagger front for collecting campaign money for local elections.

2013-08-20 07:51:55 PM
This whole thing was actually a brilliant strategy. The Tea Partiers launch this "scandal" telling the narrative that the Big Bad Fedrul Gobmint is picking on little old patriots (remeber, patriot was specifically one of the terms used) This creates sympathy for the Tea Party, and generates hate for the Federal government and taxes which is basically the Tea Party's main platform. The IRS is already unpopular, but this creates enough outright hate to boost the Tea Party numbers as conservatives finally have had enough of the IRS and join up. Once inside the echo chamber, it takes a short time for the new members to reach the point of no return.

The Federal government/IRS is caught completely unawares, and because they're the federal government they take for farking ever to rebut the claims. This makes sure the new members are completely indoctrinated by the time the scandal is proven false, at which point they will ignore all the evidence and keep believing it's a scandal. Additionally a scandal sells better than putting the scandal in the grave so one will get more media attention, and social media will also react more to a scandal. In the end, more Americans are going to believe the lie in the end. All in all a beautifully engineered strategy for gaining sympathy, and supporters.

2013-08-20 07:58:33 PM
I may have to move sunset lament from code yellow Tea Bagger to code orange Tea Bagger Troll.

I don't put people on ignore. I favorite them, color code them, and categorize them into a rainbow of hate.

Well, trying to source how and where drug cartels get guns is a wonderful idea.  The tactic was flawed, and the execution worse.  It is not a scandal however.
