Day 2? We're gonna need a graph of this real soon

Paul Lukas will rank all NBA teams at the bottom of the Uni Watch Power Rankings chart if the league ends up adding advertising patches to its uniforms.

Your move, tasteful uniform designers...

What's so great about the Celtics uniform? Green and white, wow amazing stuff. Or is it one of those "it's old so it's classic, I liked these uniforms before they were cool" kinda things?

Give me the Warriors bridge unis or barring that, those Nuggets jerseys that were designed to be worn at gay pride parades. I think OKC has cool unis too.

I really don't get this whole 'the team wins, therefore the uniforms are pretty' thing. Those two do not conflate. The Suns 'PHX' monstrosity is not going to look any better if someone's hoisting a trophy in it. Neither will the 'ATL' thing. Or any other team that decides that what they really need to do is put their city's three-letter abbreviation on the front of their jersey.

The Bulls jerseys are, for all intents and purposes, EXACTLY the same as the Celtics, except for colors, and are ranked 10 versus 1. This is just trolling for clicks.

I absolutely love the trend that Brooklyn and NO are on. Wear basketball uniforms that look like basketball uniforms. No frills. Leave the poofty crap for hockey sweaters.

2013-08-20 07:51:59 PM
As someone that lives in New Orleans, the Pelicans should be dead-last.  Completely boring, and they represent a city that is anything but boring.  Not to mention changing your name... and then not putting the friggin' name on the uniform?

There's so much to work with, yet they come out with a high-school basketball team quality uniform.

Ugh.

We should have linked to Zack Lowe's best nickname story on Grantland.  Fun stuff

But if we are doing uniforms I will take the Blazers.

I agree with you on Brooklyn.  I dig the simplicity, and I think the style fits NYC (in a good way).  But New Orleans?  You gotta do better than that in terms of representing the city.

Until this post, I was unaware that ESPN has a full-time sports uniform reporter.  I'm sure his opinions are much better than mine because I care more about my favorite sports team does on the field or court or rink, rather than how they look.  Frankly, I'd much prefer how my team is going to do this year.  But, because my favorite team is the Sixers, they have all the stuff to guarantee the losingest season record EVAR, so I guess since my favorite team's coming season is going to be such a joke the only question worth debating is what's the bigger joke -- the fact that Philly will have a team and will compete in the NBA or the fact that ESPN has "power ratings" for sports unis?

Like the logo, it's too gimmicky. They are like the 00s version of the 90s Raptors and Pistons jerseys, and at this point it looks outdated. The best uniforms are simple and classy, IMO.

I wish all his comments would have come with photos.

Part of me hates the Suns' new look. The other part thinks it's the best one in the league. I'm not sure which part will win out. I also like them changing it to t-shirts because c'mon, you have to for merchandise reasons. No one's going to be wearing a basketball jersey in everyday life.

BTW, he loves vertically-arched lettering, which the Celtics have.

And all the airport-code jerseys suck. Though I'd love to have seen Chicago rocking ORD.

Di Atribe: Meanwhile, Miami has nearly identical uniforms, but they're 6th because they put a twee little flame on the end of their T. Really?

If he's going to pretend the Spurs uniforms are great because of the U being a Spur, then yeah, the little flame is a nice touch. Hell, even Cuban knows the Mavs' jerseys aren't great, hence him soliciting ideas for new ones.

Yesterday, MLB my team (the Nationals) was #28.

Today, NBA my team (the Magic) are #28

I'm predicting this continues and the Redskins and Capitals will both be #28 in their leagues

People's opinions? Jersey sales?  The teams success in the first year with the new uniforms?

Here are some of the metrics they used:

• All judging has been done by the Uni Watch Power Rankings Executive Committee, which has a membership of one and freely admits its biases. The committee is rather fond of striped socks and the color green, for example, but is less enthusiastic about the color purple and design "innovations" that just feel like gimmicks. If you don't share the committee's preferences, then you're totally hopeless and it's a wonder you can dress yourself in the morning that's fine -- the whole point of a project like this one is that it's fun to argue and disagree. (Just to provide some diversity of opinion, we've also invited ESPN.com writers in the four major sports to give their rebuttals to the Power Rankings. Their thoughts will be posted as sidebars throughout the week.)

• Each team has been ranked primarily on the basis of its current home and road uniforms, with alternate uniforms taken into account if they're part of the team's regular uni rotation. One-off designs, special promotions, throwbacks and so on have not been considered.

• Some teams are in more or less the same chart position they occupied last year, while many others have moved up or down in the Power Rankings. Sometimes this was due to a team having changed its uniform design; in other cases it was due to a reassessment of the team's aesthetic status. We've added a "Trending" column to the charts this year, so you can see how a team's current ranking compares to last year's. (The "Trending" numbers on Monday through Thursday will refer to a team's position within its own league, while the numbers on Friday will refer to a team's overall position on the 122-team chart.)

• In a few cases, ranking a team's "current" uniform set has been tricky. The Phoenix Suns, for example, revealed their new uniforms just a few days ago, and several other teams have new unis that have been showcased in unveiling events but not yet worn on the field, court or ice. Similarly, a few new NFL uniforms have been worn in only one or two preseason games. In each case, these uniforms have been evaluated as best as possible, but it would be fair to say that their rankings should probably be viewed as though they had an asterisk.

• Several NHL teams are expected to release new alternate jerseys very soon -- but not soon enough to make it into the Power Rankings. They'll be taken into consideration next time around.

It is stupid fun and should be taken too seriously.

Well yeah, I'm not saying they're just the best unis in the league or anything. But the dude ranking them just seems inconsistent. The reasoning he had for putting Dallas that low was pretty flimsy IMNHO.

And I'm well aware of the Mavs' uniform contest. Doing a GIS for "Dallas Mavericks Uniforms" is now a huge clusterfark. Better to do a GIS for "Dirk Nowitzki Finals MVP." :)

Basically, like it is for all these lists, it's "I like this few for these reasons and I hate these few; the rest are all sh*t I have to put in some order and pretend like one is better than the other because it looks dumb to ignore half the league."

2013-08-20 11:31:01 PM
I think Chicago has the best overall uniforms of the major US cities. The Bulls, Bears & Blackhawks are all pretty timeless, as are the Cubs (though I do think they wear the blu alt too much). The White Sox are pretty good, but considering their name, should wear white socks, rather than the black they generally go with.
