We've been active in Asia for a decade or so now, some awesome helo talent out there. Wow. The way he just backs out is amazing to a fixed wing dork like me.

Why are you idiots assuming this happened in the US with an American pilot?

It would have been a help if the link wasn't to a liveleak ripoff that destroys context rather than to the original which clearly happens in Portugal. (and an old 2011 vid that may have been on Fark before)

EDIT: I became friends with the pilot flying on the video, he has a nice onboard video from another mission here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VV2vxYYD8P0...

I woke up this morning to this show. A loaded helo (Eurocopter AS350) from the portuguese firefighters landed in front of my house, droped 4 men in full gear, hooked up a bucket and started waterbombing a fire that broke out (or someone started, most likely) right next to a neighbor's house. After 20 mins the fire was controlled by a 5 men team :).

Many thanks to the unseen team on the ground, for risking their lives to save other's property.

I'm not going to bother spending the time looking for a gif of a middle finger, so just imagine one raised to you.  I didn't say anything about it being the U.S. or him being an American.  All I wrote was a bit of snark implying that maybe with a pilot like that, we wouldn't have lost that chopper.  Why don't you take a trip down to the fire station and get them to hose that sand out of your vagina?

They do a lot more with helicopters in Europe.  I saw some photos of them evacuating a ski lift with helicopters.  I think they used two choppers.  We just climb the towers and slide down to the carrier and rope people to the ground.  It takes forever (like maybe over two hours to get everyone), thankfully it doesn't happen hardly ever.

I guess maybe they have different techniques depending.  The linked evacuation was done from the ground...

Ha! When we did the ski lift rope rescue drills I asked "How long would it take for us to do this for real on a loaded lift?" The patrol supervisor told me I should expect to be there all night if it happened. Yay!

Yeah, I just meant how long persons could be on the lift.  Everything else takes a lot longer I'm sure.

Less of a donation more of an investment when the fire is that close.

Every time I see videos of that being done, I wonder why they don't make the buckets to not leak so much.

I am wondering how to know at what altitude a small, leaking bag of water is more effective to fighting a fire than a giant fan is to fueling it.

2013-08-21 12:23:44 AM
A full bucket is frequently too heavy for the helo to safely lift due to various atmospheric conditions and altitude, so a partial drop is required for a safe flight, and is performed while the bucket is partially submerged so as not to waste water.
Sometimes water simply sloshes over the side. Hundreds of gallons with a big open top and a highly unstable platform = sloshy sloshy.

2013-08-21 02:07:14 AM
does that really help fight fires?
I know that's a giant bucket by our puny human standards, but it's puny by forest fire standards.
Seriously asking here....

I saw the "internet lore" in your OP. I was just trying to mimic your writing style as a joke, and to educate anybody who actually did "think about it" and did believe it.

That game was the farking BEST.

That and Chuck Yeager's Air Combat.  Same engine, slightly upgraded.  Loved those games on my 286.
