Well, that should clear things up.

"NSA Transparency"

Yeah, that is not now, nor will it ever be a thing.

I hope you liberals realize how many thousands of lives were lost because of these leaks.

NSA or IRS... what's the difference?

They'll BOTH be running obamacare.

/thanks, liberals!

Everything's fine!

But, with all those black marks, how are we supposed to read the rep-- OHHHHHHHHHH. I get it!

2013-08-20 04:59:29 PM
In response, the spy agency held a rare conference call for the press maintaining that the violations are "not willful" and "not malicious."

If you ever get arrested or caught speeding just say "hey it wasn't wilful or malicious", should be no problem.

2013-08-20 04:59:56 PM
Ummm, so I'm sure this is embarassing for you guys, but you've been using a black marker to highlight the important stuff instead of a yellow one for decades now...

Well gotta catch up to the Bush jr dictatorship.

/He leaked so many bullets that a quarter million people suddenly became non-functioning.
//Well non-functioning in a way of electrical energy of the body stopped, but all the bacteria kept alive eating the decomposing corpse.
///And thats why we embalm people, in  order to make sure they are dead and not wriggling in the open casket funeral.

As the Post noted, members of Congress can read the unredacted version of the semiannual reports, but only in a special secure room.

I really want this room to have nothing but bean bag chairs in it.

For those paying attention:

When Bush was president, liberals were against this and right wingers had no problem with it.

With Obama president, liberals are still against this and right wingers can't figure out how to both blame Obama and still have no problem with this.

TOTALLY DIFFERENT.

I hope Greenwald has an unredacted copy and publishes it; I'll bet that a large number of the redactions have nothing to do with national security and everything to do with avoiding embarrassment and/or prosecution.

We probably all know Obama will not take any responsibility for anything that happens on his watch but  where does the buck stop on this shiat?  When are the people that voted for him going to make him and his administration be what they voted for,  "the most transparent administration"?  Hell, this admin isn't in the top 10 most transparent.
Listen up liberals, if they can continue to count on your looking the other way, staying silent, and pointing fingers at the past things aren't going to "changetm" and all our make the futures won't be better.  Who knows what administration 8 or 10 years from now will be able to say "this was something that was started in the Obama administration and we've always been able to....
Liberals, democrats, conservatives and republicans all need to be freedom loving Americans together, and we need call this shiat out!

I've seen a disappointing number of people who are in favor of this because they are colossal pussies who are afraid of terrorists.

I don't really care what their political leanings are in general, but casual observation indicates that cowardice is a bipartisan thing.

I did a report on the CIA my Junior year in High School. They left the redactions in to give you a scope of how much had been taken out. Whole 100-page sections would look like this.

Are they using the wrong set of redaction codes? Things like b1 and b3 appear to be intended to apply to documents over 25 years old, which clearly isn't the case here?

2013-08-20 05:23:17 PM
If I understand correctly, in theory, most of these violations were something like this: The NSA is bugging a Chinese official's cell phone, and he takes a vacation to Southern California, which means they have to stop listening to his phone calls because he is on US soil, but they don't turn off the bug until after he's already made a call while in the US because whoopsie.

In theory.  Who can tell for sure with document releases like that?

Of course, there are those who claimed they were liberals during the Bush years and now have no problem with it when Obama's using it.  Those would be the "moderates" that everyone says we don't have.  They're "moderate" like 2nd edition D&D defines "true neutral", only in reverse.

/DETJ: 2nd ed. D&D says a True Neutral would immediately switch sides when the underdog becomes the favorite.

My real problem with all the discussions over the past few weeks is the use of vague words like "this". People tend to conflate various activities by various government agencies by various governments, and throw them all under the "stuff like this" umbrella. It's hard to have a conversation when half of it is trying to figure out what the exact complaint is.

Are there problems? Yes. But scandal overload is going to turn off the American people, as its bound to include some things that are pet issues to any given commentator, but a majority of people are ok with. Thus, people will say, "This is what they're complaining about? That's dumb" and ignore all the real issues out there. It's getting to a point where any mention of NSA doing anything is met with cries of 1984 and the rise of the modern Himmlers. It's exhausting.

I'm sure I'll be called a fascist boot-licker anytime now.

I'm in complete opposition to the activities and programs that have been revealed over the past few weeks, but talk of 1984 is the worst thing that can happen to this discussion. I took a class on the surveillance state when I was getting my bachelor's degree, and the first thing our professor did was to disassociate surveillance from 1984 because the emotional impact is too strong for good critical assessment. So any talk of 1984 turns me off of these discussions too despite my opposition.

I've seen a large number of liberals saying the NSA program is wrong, and calling the Obama administration to task. I see the "liberal media" doing the same thing. I've also seen people who actually look at the evidence say "quit using the hyperbole", and rightly so in many cases.

The problem is all the 1984/brown shirt bullshiat that comes out. It generally forces me to discount that person's opinion, making it "seem" like I am giving the NSA or the admin a pass. I'm not. I'm just pragmatic, and I understand data collection issues.

I also understand Greenwald is a huckster, and so is his paper. Today's "the UK secret police destroyed our computers" story that FIRST came out, later replaced by "we destroyed our own computers" being a perfect example.

There is a middle ground on this program that can be discussed as adults.

Did he campaign for this job saying that a government shouldn't be allowed to spy on its people without having cause prior and then a court order?
and that that reason or court order would be available or free information?
has he pushed to have that made law?  or your privacy protected against government
you call this release transparency Mr. President?

I believe you're genuinely helping to obfuscate the issues.
