Carth: You didn't play Last of US? it is probably the best game of this generation and almost worth the $200 price fo a PS3 alone.

I bought it. It sits, unopened, on my rack of games, where it sits with Tomb Raider, Bioshock Infinite and a bunch of games that I've bought but never bothered to open yet.

IamSoSmart_S_M_R_T: Again, I think these "features" were driven by upper management,

Cubicle Jockey: My assumption is that Microsoft, like every other tech firm nowadays, doesn't view the millions of people who use its products as their actual customers.

Yeah - I suspect they see their developer 'partners' as their real customers and the game developers see the console makers as their partners and thus what we have is a cabal or purely business interests (not there's anything wrong with that) and no one really looking out for the end user except for the end user. I mean sure, at some point they have to produce product we are willing to pay for but one gets the feeling they view that as a necessary nuisance rather than their goal.

Carth: You didn't play Last of US?

Weeeeel

I finished a hardcore playthrough of fallout NV

Then went back to fallout 3 to play the DLC (I bought the GOTY edition because it was cheaper than buying the DLC with my original disk, so I actually own two copies of fallout 3 now).

// Finished Operation Anchorage (was a fun change of pace), and the Pitt (sucked, too short). Going to do another one this week.

// THEN, I will probably get the last of us and to a 50/50 split with Skyrim.

That is some pretty revisionist history you got there. Hardcore fans were the most excited about the 360 and everyone was pissed at the PS3 for its launch price and forcing people to buy a bluray player. Kinect has largely failed. There isn't a single game out there that is worth playing. Even my 8-12 year old niece and nephews think it is useless.

Wow, you seem to have a bizarre idea of what the ps4 is, or what the Xbox one tried to do.  The ps4 was built for devs, not due to gamer suggestions.  Hell, a veteran game dev is the main designer of the thing, rather then an engineer like the ps2/3.

the xbox seemed built by execs and focus groups to be the ultimate walled garden.  People like to compare it to steam, but honestly, it's nothing like steam.  MS wanted full control over all content ever released for he platform, including it's resale and sharing.  everything was locked up behind paywalls for entertainment apps, and still is.

They got power mad because of their US success this gen, and it bit them in the ass when the preorders opened.

the rest of your points were just childish rants and frankly, aren't worth addressing.

Hate to rain on the folks saying they're gonna stick with the 360, but I recall MS killing the original Xbox pretty quick after they released the 360. I'll likely be getting a PS4. In retrospect, I really should have gotten a PS3 this console generation. All the games I loved on the 360 were available on the PS3 and it also had exclusives I wanted to play. But hey, lemonade and all that. The only thing I worry about now is having to make new online friends since I likely won't be getting an Xbox 1 unless they lock down some pretty serious exclusives. Halo and Gears of War do nothing for me.

I'm more bummed that I'll be losing all the Xbox originals I bought, or rented at full price rather, over Xbox Live. As soon as support for the 360 dies, all my "online only" downloaded games (which weren't "online only" when I bought them, BTW) die with it.

Antimatter: sethen320: Antimatter: Carth: Anyone here have a Vita? I never was interested in one before but I like the idea of boarderlands 2 on it and the game with the upside head looked interesting.

The vita is...interesting.  Hardware wise, it's very, very solid.  Publishers in the west don't seem to like it though, outside Ubisoft and a few others.  Indies absolutely adore it, as do many Japanese devs from the smaller companies, like Arksys or atlas.

If you have psplus, it's a pretty good buy, save for the memory cards.  Games seem to drop in price pretty quick, and there is always a few free plus games you can play on it.

It's just...damn those cards.  If not for that it could have been a solid hit.  If you buy it as a ps4 companion that plays tons of games from smaller publishers, it's fantastic.  Else, just go get a iphone or 3ds.

What cards?

The vita uses micro SD liek cards that only work on a vita for mass storage.  They are, frankly, overpriced.

Ah. I see. Sonys still doing the overpriced memory scam.

With PSP it was Pro Duo cards but you could get a microSD converter for like 8 bucks. I assume they fixed that problem with the Vita but I'm too lazy to google.

revrendjim: I understand that switching processors means it can't natively run 360 titles, but with that much horsepower it seems like it should be able to run an emulator that would still give decent performance.

The problem with software emulation is that over the years, developers discover all sorts of hardware tricks to get a little more performance or better visual effects, etc.

These tricks are not a part of the hardware specifications and are often completely undocumented (to the point where if they were to report the issue, they would probably get a stern message saying "you're doing something against the spec so no wonder it broke").

FF to when a hardware system is being emulated via software. The people who write the emulation are going to try to get as close to the specifications as possible (because that's the documented and approved behavior of the hardware system). In a lot of cases, popular hardware hacks also get added (sometimes as options) to the emulation.

BUT, if your obscure hardware hack doesn't get emulated, then your game might run funny under emulation. Sometimes this just means graphical glitches, other times, it means the game is completely unplayable.

And sometimes, all it takes is a quick patch to fix it (sometimes causing a loss of performance), and other times, the issues are damn near irreparable.

Antimatter: sethen320: Will it work as good as the psp/ps3 streaming? Cause that was totally useless shiat.

Better.  The vita has faster wireless, the ps4 has custom hardware set aside just for streaming/capture so no performance hit, and sony built the tools for vita remote play into the ps4 SDK, so its really easy for devs to implement, you just chose a control scheme and the sdk does the rest.

Nefarious: It looks like the game itself is free and you can add additional characters for $. It's different, it goes beyond just hats but as free to play goes that isn't completely awful if you like the game you "buy it for either 20 or 40" It isn't a constant outlay free to play game.

Yep.  $20 or $40 for six characters, two more later.  And some costumes.

That's...just wow.  If there was any way to kill the hype for a fighter, it's to announce a anemic roster like that behind a paywall.

Ok, the remote play does sound interesting. Ill look into it more after launch.

That's not how it works. They are licensed to your Xbox gamertag and can be accessed any time you sign into your online account. Just like all the previous games on demand titles were released.

Just like games on demand you purchase, you cant use these games offline even if you paid full price for them. If internet connection is interrupted while you play these titles, the game initiates a 10 minute window to sign online, or it turns itself off.

People have such short memories. Just because hardcore gamers didn't latch onto it doesn't make it a failure. See also: the Wii.

The Kinect claimed the Guinness World Record of being the "fastest selling consumer electronics device" after selling a total of 8 million units in its first 60 days.[18][19][20] 24 million units of the Kinect sensor had been shipped as of January 2012.[1]

I've got one of the white PS3s. I've given up using it, it's such a piece of shiat. I don't know how you fark up your own store, but it's simply not useable to browse the PSN, assuming I can magically get the god damned thing to actually connect (I have wireless throughout the entire apartment which a phone, roku, and laptop sitting NEXT TO the ps3 have no problems attending, but the PS3 can't get on any of the 400 networks it sees, all properly passworded etc.).

I have yet to decide if I want to pawn it and keep the cash and just sit this generation out, or hawk it to gamestop and keep the store credit for an eventual system purchase down the road.

But serioulsy, DO NOT BUY the re-designed mini PS3s, even the gamestop guys went 'oh dear god you bought one?'

Who said the 360 would bomb? There was the usual debate that you get with each console generation, but I don't think there was a single person out there who was predicting it to be the next virtual boy. It was an upgraded XBOX with a (for it's time) forward thinking focus on online.

The Kinect is a bomb. It's not even a bomb, it's a punchline. Kinect Star Wars is all that need to be said there

Next you'll tell me that there are  no good games that use Kinect.

Kincet sold 24 million units (almost all bundled with an xbox). What was the last kinect required game to sell over a million copies? The highest rated Kinect required game on your list is Dance Central 3 and it has only sold 600k. All these Kinects out there and no one is buying games for it. When Viva Pinata sold more copies than your highest rated game there is something wrong.

Wasn't viva pinata in a bundle at some point too or am I high on sugar?

To echo what Carth said...

There's a huge ass difference between "Kinnect Compatible" and "Kinnect Required" on your list.

Kinnect compatible means the game is perfectly playable without a kinnect (in fact, the kinnect features of that game might be something as simple as being able to give voice commands). Whereas you can't effectively play a kinnect required game without a kinnect.

Now with that in mind, go through that damn list again and look at the "Kinnect Required" games.

// fairly certain that I played the shiat out of Skyrim without ever once thinking of getting a Kinnect for it (Though I'm sure it would be fun to yell out "FUS RO DAH!", it's not enough fun to warrant getting another peripheral).

Now I have no desire for a kinect or kinect 2.  However, even with reasonably impressive numbers kinect was an add-on.  As an add-on it had a much smaller potential user base.  I understand what MS is thinking not offering a non-kinect sku (I have no desire for a kinect) but making the kinect 2 install base can potentially give an impetus to develop an actual killer application that makes use of it.  24 million kinects is a large number but less then a third of the 360's install base.

I'd be interested in how many 360's are actually out in the wild. I bought 3 (2 red rings and one video card problem) and I"ve heard horror stories of people going through 5+. I wouldn't be surprised if there are only 50 million xbox in active use and abotu 45% with kinect.

I have no idea but is so that is the funniest thing I"ve learned today. I just took the lowest selling game on this list

It helps that it was a pack in after some time, like the original Dual shock was.  It's not a purely optional add on.

I suspect sony will start bundling the camera once they get the ps4 BOM down enough to justify it.

lordargent: So many sequels, seems fairly lackluster.

I'm going to wait a year before buying.

That is usually the best thing to do with consoles anymore. On release they are all ridiculously overpriced and I can't think of a single release that had a launch or even early first-generation game worth the MUST HAVE NOW attitude.

But given it's another XBox, I'm more likely to wait til I find one at a flea market or yard sale to get it. My 360 largely sits unused as it is while my PS3 and retro consoles get daily use, mostly.

I'm at home now, so can check my sources better.

It was part of an xbox 360 arcade bundle back in 2010 (banjo kazooie plus viva pinata plus an xbox 360 arcade unit).

... the above bundle was also on woot for $140 at some point in 2010 :P

lordargent: Gergesa: Too expensive for me. I am not sure what defines a "hardcore gamer" but it would appear in part to be someone willing to spend more money on a console than I am.

Anyone who isn't living paycheck to paycheck has at least one expensive hobby.

Some of us have several.

// gaming looks damned cheap ... compared to what I've spent on camera gear :D

// and photography looks cheap, compared to dudes with big trucks and sand rails.

God ain't that the truth. Just spent $1200 just to get 4 shocks revalved on my RZR. Damn racing shocks.

/But it puts a huge smile on my daughters and my faces every trip we take on it.
//Got to pay to play.
