JohnBigBootay: I sort of get this and I sort of don't. I mean $100 is $100 and all and I try not to throw it away. But at damn near 50 and being fortunate enough to be constantly employed in a dual income no-kid family... it's kind of an insignificant amount of money when you consider how much money one is likely to spend on gaming overall after throwing in all the services, games, peripherals and accessories. It's certainly a small enough amount of money that it seems like one would just buy the console they thought would have the most games they liked or favorite online service. That's how it seems to me anyway. Are there people who buy their second favorite car because one is 22k and the other 23k? I suppose there are.

I am 50 and could spring for the extra $100 if necessary.  But for me, it's $200 because my son and I both play and I generally have to buy 2 of everything. It's 20% of the total cost invested in an item that I don't see adding any value to me.  So yeah, it only $100 (or $200), but I don't get anything for that $100.  Scrape it off and we got a deal.  And a proper car comparison would be paying 27.5k instead of 22k for features that you don't want and don't believe you will ever use.  That's the issue.

Funny thing is I see all these people saying how overpriced the One is yet the PS3 was $600 at launch.  They were going to include the Eye in the PS4 and sell it for $500 but after they saw the bad reaction when MS released their price tag they changed it at the last minute.  Yet the PS3 still successful, despite the drawbacks, like the cell processor which was apparently a biatch to code on, terrible SDK's from Sony, Valve saying they would never release a game on the PS3 (or just Gabe, but he's a douche IMO).  So ten years ago, $600 not to much, this year $500 is to expensive but $400 is fine.  When you look at the life of a console, games bought, services, in the end how much is that $100 (or one game and $30) really going to be the deciding factor?  I doubt it as I think both will be near impossible to get around Christmas, could be wrong but just my gut feeling.

error 303: I'll buy one once The Elder Scrolls Online comes out. Give me enough time to run through my remaining 360 library and hopefully avoid any problems in the initial hardware run.

Compared to what $400 (or less) will buy you in video cards, you might want to think about running the Elder Scrolls Online on PC.  I feel sorry for the [one] Skyrim fan I know who plays on PS3 (she's a mac user), but I don't expect that MMOs will ever include the mods that I expect with Elder Scrolls games.

rpm: 360 is SMP, PS3 is AMP. It's hard enough finding good SMP programmers.

I have to ponder how much that matters, most of the multi-format releases seem to only really make use of 1 core when they land on the PC (that was GTA4's main issue for the longest time).   Which does make sense; the more game logic you've got running the more RAM you'd need and on a 360 that'd mean taking it away from the GPU.   Although I do admit that could just be an oddity of the porting process.

But everything I've read about the PS3 likens it to the Saturn from the top on down; a total sod to develop for any which way you attack it.

I do agree that programmers who are good SMP are very thin on the ground and tend to carry a premium as they'll be beating on large corporate stuff for the most part.  It's a little more complex than calling fork() until the CPU cries after all.

I couldn't care less about the last generation.  I went with a 360 then, but M$ has changed considerably since that time.  Bill Gates was still working full time at M$ when the 360 was developed, and M$ still had a decent if not perfect reputation for quality and innovation.

After Windows Vista, 8, and the Surface RT, the Xbone is going to be a disaster, and I'm not wasting money on a system that nobody will be using a year or two from now.

Seriously, I doubt that "nobody will be using" the Xbone a year or two from now.  MS may or may not win the console war, but the 360 won this round and there are plenty people using the PS3 just the same.  There will be a market.  MS just isn't helping people like me to get off the fence and commit to them now.

I used to be a huge PC gamer, but for whatever reason, once I had kids, it was just easier to game in my living room on a console. I'm gonna be carpeting my basement this weekend and hopefully throwing a decent TV down there in my office nook, was planning on running a cable from my PC to the TV, getting a wireless game pad, and seeing if I can get back into it.

I do really think Xbox Live has gotten to be a great entertainment hub though, and it probably the only difference I see at this point between the XB1 and PS4.

Well, I am one of those few people who actually enjoys the Kinect as well, as do the childrenspawn...

2013-08-20 02:45:35 PM

Vaneshi: Why would you buy the more expensive one, especially as that's the one with the theoretically weaker capabilities?

Fair enough. The answer for me coming from not having had a console before is that I really liked the tv shiat at the demo. The reason I bought it was for the other stuff, not the gaming part. Hopefully I will enjoy a game or two as well and I'm sure the kids who visit will enjoy some games.

a flock of birds: My 360 died on me for the second time a few years ago.  I recently got back into gaming and picked up a PS3.  Really glad I did.

There's no way I can go back to Microsoft, and it has very little to do with their sociopathic business practices.  They just don't bring the types of exclusives I like to their systems.  Halo and Gears are good enough for what they are, but I'm tired of just shooting at things.  I've played games for too long; i need something new.   Microsoft has made the COD crowd their target audience.  That's just not me.

Also, only PS4 will have The Last of Us 2, and really, that's all I need to make up my mind.  God, that game...

You know you've fallen far when your business practices are "sociopathic" when compared to Sony.

The PS3 was expensive and they lagged behind in sales of console at and immediately following launch. In Q4 of '06, Xbox shipped 4.4 million Xbox 360s, whereas the PS3 sold 1.7. It evened out in subsequent quarters, but it took until this year or last year for PS3 to catch up to XBox's lifetime sales numbers.

Incidentally, $100 bucks is a lot. For $100 bucks, you can almost buy 2 games, or a game and a controller. Sure, it's probably all going to equal out eventually, but at launch, $100 bucks can mean an extra 2 games per console. In the end, it's the software that Sony and Microsoft make money on, not the hardware.

IIRC, the 360 sold well in the US and the PS3 sold well in Japan and the rest of the world, giving the two systems roughly the same numbers.  With the anger toward M$, a lot of its base will be switching and as people find that their friends are on the PS4, they'll go along and switch as well.  It's the myspace/Facebook effect.  There will still be a network and still be people around, but it will be noticeably inferior.

We'll see how it goes, but I think a bet against the Xbone is a pretty safe one at this point.

I'll prolly get it, but not till fall of 2014. My 360 still rules the house in terms of consoles, and it isn't being replaced anytime soon (especially since MS gives two free games per month, its life expectancy just increased by a decent factor).

I have pre-orders for launch editions of each console.  I've had no issues with my Xbox 360's (old one and a slim) and peripherals (4 sets of rechargeable batteries have yet to fail) but I'm leaning more and more towards the PS4 because I don't want or need the Kinect and don't feel like spending $200 (two systems) for a peripheral I don't want.

I ended up with a 360 by accident.  I wanted a PS3, mostly because I preferred the Sony-only titles that they produced (well, outside of the PC).  So, I ordered this PS3 from some twit on eBay.  Barely used!  But, they live in Alaska, and apparently only went to the Post Office once a week.  After two weeks of that ol' bait and switch, I went to Gamestop to buy a preowned PS3.  They didn't have any!  So, I ended up getting a new 360 with Kinect, mostly because I figured the kids would play with it.

Then I discovered that the Kinect system is shiatty, and all but one (Happy Action Theatre) are shiatty, too.  Even my kids, who can be forgiving about crappy games, can't stand the Kinect.

We now have a Wii U.  Even so, the most frequently used system outside of the PC for all of us is the 3DS.

Vaneshi: Some 'Splainin' To Do: The fact that Sony has adopted a standard architecture is a good sign. A big chunk of the PS3s problems can be directly traced to the fact that they went with a cell microprocessor.

Not so much it's PPC like the 360.  The major problem was and continues to be that whilst they have the same amount of RAM in them the 360 can dynamically (at the very least per game) reallocate it towards the CPU or GPU.  The PS3 is stuck with a hard-wired 50/50 split, which is fine if you've got 'large' maps and average graphics or need a lot of variables juggles but... not so much when you're trying to get something graphically intensive to run.

It also tends to have the more psychotic hypervisor and the GPU itself is a mess by all accounts but the processor itself isn't that much of an issue compared to the rest.

the cell was not worth exploiting anyways as nothing on the market behaves in any way like it, you could do specialty programming but not even sony got anything out of that in the long run, i mean all of their 1st party games would've been just as great on a different architecture - the cell was never vindicated in the end, and it didn't help that the cell design that ended up in the ps3 was a dumbed down version of what they were aiming for in the first place

of course, the ps4 and xbone have the same cpu's this time around, too bad they're both dumbed down but hey what console games have ever been cpu intensive?

The PS3 didn't really take off until they lowered the price to $250, and by then the system had built up a nice library of games.
