My 360 is crapping out. Im more likely to buy a new one than to bother with an Xbox One.

So many sequels, seems fairly lackluster.

I'm going to wait a year before buying.

I can't really understand this assumption that the PS4 is going to be amazing, given what a steaming pile the 3 was on launch.

Based on the thin layer of dust that coats the top of my PS3, I'm probably going to wait a year for the PS4 as well.

// now I have time to catch up on my backlog of 360 games

I'll buy one once The Elder Scrolls Online comes out. Give me enough time to run through my remaining 360 library and hopefully avoid any problems in the initial hardware run.

Less fail from Sony than MS so far, which given Sony's track record, means the PS4 will likely be more volatile than a Pinto.

I've been waffling about keeping my PS4 preorder, lots of stuff I want to play that hits in the next few weeks, and not much at launch for the PS4 other than Watch Dogs (which will also be PS3)

Yeah I'm seeing nothing compelling enough to get me to buy a crap-ass launch system. It seems like 90% of the games announced will be released on current gen systems as well. I can wait a year.

ampoliros: Never Buy a Console at Launch

I just bought my first ever console in November, so i'm looking forward to learning about what i'll be buying in 2018

I honestly think the $499 price tag is gonna be a deal breaker.

My Xbox360 says fark off and get off my lawn!

Never buy a console at launch. That's like having unprotected sex on the first date with a girl off craigslist. You really want to take that risk?

I'll take a serious look at Spring next year, and if my tax returns are burning a hole in my wallet I might consider Xbone or PS4. For now meh, call me when a title comes out that is must have to die for.. I don't see one yet.

oh_please: I honestly think the $499 price tag is gonna be a deal breaker.

All they have to do is un-bundle the Kinnect, and off it at $400 and everything swings back to MS. It will also mean a complete flip-flop on everything that MS said they would not change (always on, no used games).

I was at a training session for work (Six Sigma for those curious, and ye gods was it tedious) and one of the things that got driven home was the idea of value. Value being defined as "something the customer is willing to pay for"

The Kinnect is something that customers don't want, and don't want to have to pay extra for. Improve the value of the One by un-bundling it and you increase how attractive it is. How is it that a megacorp like MS doesn't know basic business?

And we are proud to announce that the Xbox One will launch with twenty-three different versions of Ryse: Son of Rome.  Whether you're playing the Ryse Day One Edition, the Ryse Day Four Edition, or the Ryse Fabric of War Edition, with a piece of an actual Roman Legionnaire's armor embedded directly into the disc, all academic disciplines will replace their studies with a copy of Ryse: Son of Rome.  Wow.  I can't wait to see what the future of education holds for us all.

Aside from Crimson Dragon (which I am assuming is a sequel to Blue Dragon from the 360), is there any title on this list that we didn't already know about?

Crimson Dragon is a spiritual successor to the Panzer Dragoon rail-shooting series.  Just throwing that out there.

This. Although I gave my PS2 to my goddaughter.

Aside from the save issues with fallout 3 and skyrim, the only negative I had with the ps3 is the lack of a Valkyrie Profile 3. I blame tri-ace for that.

Games and movies in 7.1 surround is awesome.

The ability of the ps3 to update it bluray movie playback capability as the medium developed was its true saving grace. The Netflix and Hulu integration is a bonus.

I think I just talked myself out of getting a ps4.

Well, anyone who wants it, EIP (I think). It's just taking up space under my fully-functional XBox (which I bought after the used one - the one I'm trying to sell - RROD'd after a month, after my original one RROD'd after 14 months).

HotWingConspiracy: I can't really understand this assumption that the PS4 is going to be amazing, given what a steaming pile the 3 was on launch.

The fact that Sony has adopted a standard architecture is a good sign. A big chunk of the PS3s problems can be directly traced to the fact that they went with a cell microprocessor. In theory, it makes it graphically powerful. In practice, it makes it a biatch and a half to develop for, so most developers have, sensibly, viewed the PS3 as a box that you port games to after you develop them for PC and XBox.  It's also a big reason that so many of the games of it are bug ridden.

Does it mean that it will be amazing? I dunno. I'm going to wait a full year before I jump to a next gen console to see what issues shake out. At the moment, however, I'm getting bad vibes from the XB1... it really doesn't sound like they have their shiat together, yet... so I tending to put my hopes on the PS4.

It's a tough pill to swallow, no doubt.  I keep hoping against hope that MS will come to its senses and put out a non-Kinnect 2 version and scrape $100 off.  Do that, and I place my preorder today.  BUT this:

Baelz: Never buy a console at launch. That's like having unprotected sex on the first date with a girl off craigslist. You really want to take that risk?

concerns me as well.  Did MS learn its lesson with the original 360 RRoD?  Since they haven't seemed to have learned anything from Sony's PS3 launch fiasco, it seems unclear that they are capable of learning, although they have been listening of late.

McGrits: The ability of the ps3 to update it bluray movie playback capability as the medium developed was its true saving grace.

In my case,

I started with a PS2, my flatmate at the time had an xbox, I started buying xbox games. When he moved out, I bought an xbox (so that I could continue to play xbox games).

Then the 360 came out, I waited a few months before buying it (waiting for burnout revenge to be released). Got a bunch of 360 games.

Didn't see anything on the PS3 that I wanted, didn't (and still don't) care about blu-ray, I buy gaming consoles to play games.

// eventually, I bought a launch PS3 from a friend (it was collecting dust in her house) for $200. I played heavy rain, little big planet and uncharted. And now it's collecting dust (until I have time to get/play the last of us))
.

I think they actually have reversed course on the "always have to have the kinnect connected" thing. So now you don't have to have the kinnect, but you do have to pay for it.

Some 'Splainin' To Do: The fact that Sony has adopted a standard architecture is a good sign. A big chunk of the PS3s problems can be directly traced to the fact that they went with a cell microprocessor.

Not so much it's PPC like the 360.  The major problem was and continues to be that whilst they have the same amount of RAM in them the 360 can dynamically (at the very least per game) reallocate it towards the CPU or GPU.  The PS3 is stuck with a hard-wired 50/50 split, which is fine if you've got 'large' maps and average graphics or need a lot of variables juggles but... not so much when you're trying to get something graphically intensive to run.

It also tends to have the more psychotic hypervisor and the GPU itself is a mess by all accounts but the processor itself isn't that much of an issue compared to the rest.

I sort of get this and I sort of don't. I mean $100 is $100 and all and I try not to throw it away. But at damn near 50 and being fortunate enough to be constantly employed in a dual income no-kid family... it's kind of an insignificant amount of money when you consider how much money one is likely to spend on gaming overall after throwing in all the services, games, peripherals and accessories. It's certainly a small enough amount of money that it seems like one would just buy the console they thought would have the most games they liked or favorite online service. That's how it seems to me anyway. Are there people who buy their second favorite car because one is 22k and the other 23k? I suppose there are.

I can't wait to check out the new Xbone exclusive sim, Console Tycoon, where you run your company into the ground by pissing off your customers and charging $100 more than the competition's superior, or at the very least equivalent, system.  You can simulate burning money and the Kinnect will pick up on it.

I foresee large numbers of 'it turned itself off' complaints.  Probably bad batches of sensors cropping up and so on along the XBone's life cycle.

360 is SMP, PS3 is AMP. It's hard enough finding good SMP programmers.

My 360 died on me for the second time a few years ago.  I recently got back into gaming and picked up a PS3.  Really glad I did.

There's no way I can go back to Microsoft, and it has very little to do with their sociopathic business practices.  They just don't bring the types of exclusives I like to their systems.  Halo and Gears are good enough for what they are, but I'm tired of just shooting at things.  I've played games for too long; i need something new.   Microsoft has made the COD crowd their target audience.  That's just not me.

Also, only PS4 will have The Last of Us 2, and really, that's all I need to make up my mind.  God, that game...

JohnBigBootay: Yeah, they backed off that one as well.

So you're pretty much left with this: both systems have the same arch, they have roughly similar capabilities (with the PS4 slightly ahead in theory) and specifications, they both even look similar.  One comes with a dongle nobody REALLY wants and adds £100 to the RRP.

Why would you buy the more expensive one, especially as that's the one with the theoretically weaker capabilities?
