This is one of those moments in history that future generations will look back on with shame, anger and utter, utter bewilderment.

On the bright side, there likely won't be that many more future generations.

Just shop on the outside of the store.  Swing right as you enter, grab fruits and veggies, head left, grab whatever meat you need, keep going left and grab bread. About the only canned thing I'll buy is tomatoes.  Only frozen items are peas, corn, etc.

Kind of a pain in the ass to cook for yourself every day, but if you want to know why you should, read Cooked: http://www.amazon.com/Cooked-A-Natural-History-Transformation/dp/1594 2 04217/

the first isle of every supermarket that I have ever been to is all produce, it's not the supermarkets fault people don't spend more time there.

I don't buy into the "Soda gives you diabeetus" thing.

It's scientifically proven that dieting doesn't help.  People need physical activity to stay healthy.

But suggest an overhaul of the food stamp program used to purchase this kind of crap, and you're some kind of racist monster.

Don't worry, the big junk food companies will buy more congress people and get the FDA to label everything "natural", or "part of a healthy breakfast".

Then Big Pharma will develop more magic pills to give you six pack abs in 3 weeks.

It's all perfectly healthy.

That's not really true.  The big opponents would be the food lobby.  I think most people who support food stamps on principle would support expanding the program (with funding increases) to try to get people to eat healthier.

Hell, putting money into the program for that purpose would probably save us all money in the long run.

It's not that hard to avoid processed foods, people, it just takes a little time and effort. We both work full time, have kids, the whole bit, but somehow we manage to make just about every meal with fresh produce, unprocessed meat, dairy, etc. It has the potential to be more expensive though, I'll grant that. So many processed foods taste like garbage, and the sodium content in most things, holy shiat.

Actually, it is really true. Not sure if you've seen the threads where someone proposes limiting food stamps to healthy choices, but they are called a monster and it's considered a "war on the poor" to limit their purchases.

This. Once upon a time you could only use food stamps to buy food not already prepared - you had to get raw meat, vegetables, milk, etc and cook for yourself. Couldn't buy candy or tv dinners or anything like that.

On the bright side, the pension crisis is waning. The world will be full of 90 year old skinny boomer pensioners, supported by fat, sick young people. Like God intended.

If you're interested in a thoughtful piece, written by a doctor, on the causes and treatments of obesity, you can find one here:

Fat City: What can stop obesity?

The top of the first page helpfully states: Medium length read, 5700 words. IMHO, it's worth it.

No one is forcing people to buy unhealthy food, it's what sells. This reminds me of the complaints that pop music is shiatty, but no one is forced to buy it, it's what sells. So I have no problem with the choices people make. I can only care for myself.

Not sure if he is secret troll. Yes a lot of what he said is true but the magazine shiat was retarded, he seemed to miss the point of most of them. Also seems like he skipped the produce aisle. It's always been the most visually appealing area of the store to me. Produce areas are always wide open spaces with plenty of great colors. He also seemed to skip what was actually in the aisles and focused entirely on the ends. If you gonna talk shiat about how bad people eat, then go look at and talk shiat about the food and not the impulse buy areas.

Here's an alternate point of view.  Why not be fat?  I mean, when the diabeetus catches up it might suck, but in the mean time you get to have all the tasty crap you want.  Again assuming you don't care what you look like either.  But if you're comfortable with it, why not?  In the modern world you don't have to exactly be in shape to make a living.  In fact you can find some tech jobs that wouldn't even require you to leave the house and still make a decent living by telecommuting.  We don't have to hunt/gather, or hell if you live in major cities you don't even have to  actually go to a grocery store, you can pay Amazon to bring it to you.  So no need to eat bowls of shredded cardboard and run 60 miles a day as long as you can sit in your Mom's basement and wiggle your fingers across a keyboard.

True, this would cause a rise in healthcare costs which would suck for the few of us who are still healthy, but the decreased death rate may be to our advantage.

Is this some new talking point?  The first ever food stamp purchase was in May 29, 1961, in West Virginia, and it was a can of pork and beans.

I'll admit, hating poor people for buying processed food is a welcome respite from hating poor people for buying steak and lobsters.

Pontious Pilates: It has the potential to be more expensive though, I'll grant that

Potential? Fresh produce is horrendously expensive unless you live near a good farmers' market and even then the price/calorie is way higher than for processed (junk) food. Much of that can be traced to the monstrosity that is subsidized corn.

People's brains are hardwired to like sugar.

Companies play to that behavior by selling drinks with high sugar content.  Said drinks sell well.

As such, supermarkets put up many large displays selling such drinks.

Everyone gets diabetus.

We all die at some point.

The end.

Short of outright criminalizing certain categories of food product, there's no getting rid of what this guy is ranting about.

Or did I just read a pro-criminalization of "inappropriate food as defined by this hippie" rant?

TofuTheAlmighty: Potential? Fresh produce is horrendously expensive unless you live near a good farmers' market

I see people say this all the time in these threads, but I've never really seen evidence of it anywhere I've lived.

I can go to the produce section of the closest grocery store to where I'm at right now and get a week's worth of meals for my wife and I for under $50, easy.

And where do you people live where you can't find a farmers' market near you? Even in the most desolate parts of the northern Midwest where I live, you can't throw a rock without hitting a farmers' market.

How about the government stop massively subsidizing corn syrup? It would be a start.
