Decillion: cygnusx13: Anyone who has any connection whatsoever to the movie Get Shorty deserves to die from complications of a stroke.Such was the epicness of that disaster. You're thinking of the sequel.
willfullyobscure: mass market pulp crap matters to liiterature now?wake me when Cormac McCarthy dies, not the old white male version of Stephanie Meyers
theorellior: "Out of Sight" was a hilarious book and an even better movie. I don't care what anyone says, there wasn't a weak link in that cast, and they were all on fire.
Tyrone Slothrop: theorellior: "Out of Sight" was a hilarious book and an even better movie. I don't care what anyone says, there wasn't a weak link in that cast, and they were all on fire.Wait, there were people who didn't like Out of Sight? It was so good it actually made Jennifer Lopez seem like a real actress.
Digitalstrange: I liked Elmore Leonard OK but always considered him a poor man's John D. McDonald. If you were an EL fan but have not read the Travis McGee books by McDonald do yourself a favor and hunt them down.
sweet-daddy-2: Damn, I've read almost everything he's written ( except Westerns ). John MacDonald left way too soon.Hopefully writers like Carl Hiaasen and Randy White will stay for another 100 years or so.
NuttierThanEver: Justified is certifiably awesome. You Breaking Bad fans looking for your next addiction after Walt and Jessie done get blowed up ought to give it a shot/RIP Mr. Leonard
Lumbar Puncture: willfullyobscure: mass market pulp crap matters to liiterature now?wake me when Cormac McCarthy dies, not the old white male version of Stephanie MeyersLeonard was likely the best writer of dialogue that the writing world has ever seen. He could define a character with one sentence. He knew how to write banter in a way that felt natural and gave further insights to the characters involved in it. A chapter of Leonard's characters doing nothing but talking is more interesting than many books.McCarthy sucks at dialogue, mostly because he disdains using punctuation. You call Leonard a pulp writer, but his plots were much tighter than any tangent ridden garbage McCarthy has written./was probably just trolled, but I don't give a fark.
whizbangthedirtfarmer: Let's hope you don't want to read too many books from the South, or the rest of the world. The dash opening to a line is actually fairly common.
whizbangthedirtfarmer: Of course, freshly dead, Leonard will receive tons of accolades. But, I think when people have a chance to impartially review his work, they will see a very uneven career. Tishomingo Blues was great; Raylan was not. And it goes that way throughout his career. He had a decent style with great language, but, many times, his plots just kinda fell apart or relied too much on coincidences.
