And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why boxing/MMA/tackle football/etc are little more than protracted suicide for most of their participants.

Guys like Money Mayweather and GSP are the smart ones.  They receive very little damage yet still make bank.  Guys like Nick Diaz make a lot of money now, but "putting on a show" like they do is going to fark up their brain when they're older.

Absolutely. And it's not as though their style makes the activity "safe" at all, but it is the smart way to fight if you want to have any hope of being functional at an old(er) age at all. Machida, too. A friend and i were having this same conversation about Mayweather just a few days ago. Dude gets paid by running his mouth, not by getting hit in the head, and that's the smartest thing he'll ever do.

That is why the type of fighting Mayweather does is called technical fighting, because technically you are not supposed to get hit, and you are supposed to hit the other guy without being hit. Somewhere in boxing that all changed to standing toe to toe and trading shots.

Did that hurt? Because it looks like it hurt.

Yeah.  Wish I could un-see that, actually.

Dumbass doesn't even know how to box. You're not supposed to just take punches like that.

I know, right..  you'd think he could dodge a slo-mo punch!

daaaaaaaaaamn

You can actually see his skull reverse direction before his face.

This reminds me of seeing a driver hit a golf ball and watching it flex as the core moves before the cover, except it's the skull moving before the face (and likely the brain).  Ow.

Mayweather can run his mouth because he's a phenomenal boxer. The way he weaves in an out of punches, even when backed in a corner or up against the ropes is beautiful. It's almost as if he actually does see everything in slow-mo.

The ears is what always gets me in these. Watch the ears, especially the one on the opposite side of the punch. That's some serious force.

This is a bit like saying "Why do other RBs insist on getting hit, when they could just do 360 spins and juke out eight defenders out of their jocks like Barry Sanders did?"

It's easier to be a "technical fighter" when you're a once in a generational talent and a freak of nature like Maryweather, especially in regards to foot quickness and hand speed.   Someone who attempts a  counter punching style like Mayweather's without those physical gifts is someone who doesn't have a very long professional boxing career.

I couldn't agree more with everything you just said. I truly believe Mayweather is this generation's Cassius Clay.

I just showed this to my dad. He said it looked like his face was about to come off of his skull.

There was a serious amount of power behind that shot.

What in the hell are you on? Other than being primarily counterpunchers (which Ali wasn't always), he couldn't possibly be any more different than Ali, in or out of the ring. Talent-wise? Maybe, but even that is a stretch.
