You have to pretty much just be H Jon Benjamin. His range, in his normal voice, is impressive.

I gotta admit, that show surprised me.  The promos looked unpromising, but it's turned out to be far better than it has any right to be.

I had my snark all warmed up, but you know, I agree with the article. It is a fun, positive cartoon that's consistently better than any other animated broadcast network shows right now.

Yeah, but the article takes a lot of the fun out of it.

i was thinking of warburton's "range" the other day while watching family guy. i think he has more range with joe swanson than he has had with any other character, animated or live-action, ever in his career. i really dig the guy and his work, as i do to a lesser extent with coach mcguirk h jon benjamin, but "range" is a poor choice for describing the talent of either of these guys.

It would have been more awesome if Gene and Louise had some lines... and considering that Eugene Mirman AND Kristen Schaal were in a later episode, that's nearly an unforgivable sin.

Range, within the subset of "normal" voice. Highs and lows, energy, etc. Both, perhaps moreso Benjamin, are masters of the "conversational" style - the lines feel casual, not like "lines," though good writers play a huge part there too. Makes for good banter.

So, I mean it's not range in a more traditional/broader sense.

for some reason i've never gotten into that show. it's good, i just always forget to watch it.

first 2 things that got me liking warburton were "emporer's new groove", especially when he talks to the squirrel, and seinfeld. when i first watched family guy and heard joe, my immediate reaction was something along the lines of thinking about david puddy talking to a squirrel

yeah i get what you're saying, and i do agree on that end. as i said i really dig warburton and hjb...they have their own style, and despite not being able to project a broad array of vocal styles, they still aren't typecast. they do a wide range of characters who all happen to have very similar voices.

such a huge difference from the greats of my childhood and my dad's childhood...especially folks like mel blanc! i suppose, though, that he is the exception to whatever rule may be in question.

I think Billy West is the modern Mel Blanc.  He sounds different in every character he plays.  Yeah, you can still "hear" Billy West in there, but he changes it up completely!

Professor Farnsworth sounds nothing like Zoidberg.  And Fry sounds nothing like Zapp Brannigan.  And that's 4 characters on just ONE show.

he's also an m&m! actually i'd consider him more like frank oz. you can always tell a voice is done by frank oz, yet there is a good difference with each character.
