So you're telling me that there's a segment of the environmental movement that use environmental concern to push their anti-technology beliefs? Say it ain't so!

Well, I usually don't keep my iPhone in the frig...

I have the original iPhone... when it was still steam powered.  Cost me five lumps of coal a day to run that biatch.

Well, the iPhone does run hot, so I'm assuming I could probably use it to start a fire. The cold refrigerator, not so much.

I charge mine exclusively on the lighter plug of my '72 impala that only hits on 5 cylinders.  And I use a DC-AC inverter and plug my wall charger into that, just because.  And my case is bound in genuine Saskatchewan seal skin.

You mean an article that put an Apple trademark in the headline just to get clicks might not be entirely accurate?

Who could have possibly guessed?

Next thing you know, the American taxpayer will start to pay for the coal to generate the power for these "poor" household that have refrigerators and obamaphones.

Why do they list the Xbox 360, the worst selling of the previous generation of consoles?

The Wii doesn't use any power at all as it sits there collecting dust.

Actually, in this case, it's a shill for the coal industry trying to stress the importance of burning more coal to generate the electricity needed to support the iPhones and associated "cloud" services.

Ok. It ain't so.

FTFA:
As  Time's Wash points out in a well-researched update, Mark Mills, the author of the study everybody was citing, tends to exaggerate the Internet's power consumption because he believes burning all that coal is a good thing. He has founded several power-industry funded non-profit organizations and 2006 he co-authored "The Bottomless Well: The Twilight of Fuel, The Virtue of Waste, and Why We Will Never Run Out of Energy "

Everything I've seen has the PS3 and Xbox 360 both right around 78 million total units sold.  Sony doesn't release official numbers, though.

The PS3 has been selling at a faster rate than the 360 for quite some time. The PS3 hit 78 million around march, the 360 hit 78.2 mil in june (I believe). The conclusion is clear and is what every article has been saying for months, that the PS3 has sold more.

The 360 launched a year earlier and didn't lose its head start until recently. Sony finally taking the lead doesn't change the fact that by entering the console market in the first place, Microsoft took away half of Sony's PS2 customers who got a 360 instead of a PS3. Microsoft humbled Sony. But then of course Microsoft became the arrogant one and their XBone PR disaster gives Sony a big opportunity.

I'm betting if it was all added up, tower power, network, bad driving, stupidity, impulse buys, manufacture, etc - the iphone WILL use more fossil fuels than a fridge.

You can make refrigerators on recycled materials, fuel production waste and wind power.

A technologically illiterate iAnything user would be the most likely candidate to believe their device is different than the rest.  Different being better, of course.  This doesn't apply to you, you, or you though.  Other iThing people...not intelligent and attractive ones such as the person reading this...

Sadly it appears sony is phoning it in this time around. Competition is good for the consumer. MS is actually changing their stances significantly and throwing in extras, I'm almost interested now, but the ps4 hasn't gotten any better to my knowledge. I'm mostly into pc games so I don't really have a horse in this race, but the built in dev kit on the xbone has my interest.
I'm waiting for MS to start giving away surface RTs or cut the price. Also, I think sony's marketing department is the only one that avoided the spiked punch... ps4 is unimaginative but at least clear, which ms and nintendo have failed at.
