This story just brings together so many things that I love, including pancakes.

Over 9000 internets to Prince on this one.

And actually with the pancakes. That's fantastic. I love it when people have a sense of humor, and Charlie Murphy's Prince story was hilarious and surreal.

CSB time, also Murphy-related: I met Lionel Richie at an after-show party about 15 years ago. The first question that popped into my mind was what he thought of Eddie Murphy as Buckwheat singing "Unce, tice, fee tines a mady".

/He said he really got a kick out of it...

This is too awesome for words.

CSB Time: I had gone on a couple of dates with this girl and we were still getting to know each other. She was a bit of a hippie chick which I loved, and we had both expressed an interest in the Grateful Dead already so I knew things were on the right track. Well, I'm on the phone with her and I'm flipping through a Rolling Stone magazine and there's an add for the new Prince album (Symbol one) and I see it and go, "Hell yes, a new Prince album!"  Well, I immediately wonder how a hippie Dead loving check is going to react to my love of Prince, and she says, "I love Prince!" I knew right then I had a keeper.

So how does the story end?  I married that girl. We have three kids, the oldest goes off to start college next week, and are in the process of living happily ever after.

dig if you will a picture, of Prince just destroying "Morning Dew".  I can totally hear that.  Actaully, how about a Purple Rain > Dew > Purple Rain sandwich?

/with a "Rain" encore like the GD did from time to time
//CSB: Calexico does an awesome Tomorrow Never Knows, with the melody to "Within You Without You" snuck in, and towards the end, they throw in the "sunshine, I don't mind" chorus to Rain.  yeah, it rules your face

I feel obligated to say this in any Prince thread: if youve
never seen him live, do it. Do it now. It doesnt matter what it costs. It doesn't matter if you're a fan, or not. Even if you aren't, you will be by the end of the show.

No one can put on a show like Prince, no one can play guitar like him. It isn't enough to see on video. You have to be in the room to really feel it.

yeah, i'll generally agree.  seen him three times i think.  no one does what he does.  at one show he played every instrument onstage except sax (but not at the same time, that would be impossible).  and everything he played, he destroyed.  guitar and piano, duh, but he took Larry Graham's bass and the way he popped it and made that thing thump, you were like, "huh?"  and then drums.  just insane.

i passed on his last few tours because of ticket price.  the little club run from a few months ago, face was i think $280.  FACE.  granted, small club and all, but.....I'm not paying $280 on a work night.

/and neither were others. two days of "early show, late show" were announced
//ticket sales were so bad one night was cancelled
///then, some fans didn't get the memo that there would be only one show.  they showed up at like, 10PM for the 11PM show, were turned away.  They real mad.  Don't know hwo that ended, but people were furious.

Pancakes aside, that was quite the funky groove.

/Saw Prince in a small-ish venue. Great show, but not in my top 5. IIRC, he didn't play a lot of hits.

Ok, since this is a Prince thread, I'm going ask for some input about a Prince song.  The song is Little Red Corvette.  On one line, he said that 'the ride is so smooth, that it's like riding in a limousine.'  So the question is: was he complimenting her or dissing her since there are two ways to interpret this:

1) a compliment since it is a luxurious ride
2) a diss since it is VERY roomy inside and since the ride is so smooth, you barely feel a thing.

Ok, help me out with this one, Farkers.

Ok, help me out with this one, Farkers.

The girl in this story is a complete and total sex addict and a slob.  She has used condoms laying around and pictures of people she sleeps with.  For some reason he wants a lasting relationship with this woman.  She's probably hot but insane.  I bet she has 14 cats and they all live inside.
Anyways, he describes her as a limousine because the ride is smooth.  I'm guessing he describes it as such to make the point that a) he enjoys it and b) she's not just some crazy bucking bronco leaving bruises and breaking lamps.

So I'm going with option 1, as a description of her technique.

David Hidalgo (Los Lobos) wants some of that too.  He maybe won't go down as an all-time great, but in terms of "what he can do" versus "how many people know him" is one of the all time worst signal-to-noise ratios.  he is an amazingly versatile players that can absolutely stand onstage with anyone and duel, yet.....people think all he did was 'La Bamba' 25+ years ago.

^this
people who know me for any time at all know that i'm a huge music fan, i've played in some bands, etc, and they know that i go to concerts when financially possible, and i've seen 100s or 1000s of acts live. they know that my preference is rock/alt/etc.

they are typically surprised when, if the topic comes up, i tell them the absolute best concert i've ever attended was:

PRINCE & NPG Dec 1998 in Frankfurt, Germany! (bonus: candy dulfer's hot self on saxaphone! other bonus: graham central station opened the show)

close 2nd was DMB a couple of years ago in dallas

my favorite band ever is pearl jam and even the 1 time i've been able to see them (believe it was rock-am-ring 2000) didn't make the top 2. i am, however, finally getting to see them again 11/15/13 in dallas!

I remember the first time I saw that sketch. When Murphy says, "Wearing the same sh*t he was wearing at the club" I nearly pissed myself in laughter.

As a side note, I've always thought Prince to be one of the most badass guitarists out there. People forget that given his persona and tendency to change musical styles from track to track. Then the diminutive guy shows up at the Super Bowl in 2007 and just shreds the sh*t out of it. Bonus: guitar-penis that no one seemed to notice until a week later.

I agree totally.

And my word of advice is this: When the theatre lights come on, and people start walking out - wait.

He frequently comes back on for a late encore for the fans who stayed. And you normally get to run down to the front of the stage if you've been sitting up in the cheap seats. (Personally, I think he does this on purpose so he gives his fans who can't afford the premium seats a good show too.)

My ex-wife was a HUGE Prince fan; I was/am hit-or-miss with him.  We went to see him in Dallas when he had the NPG band together...it was AMAZING.  At one point, he sat down at the piano and played a twenty minute medley of song requests the audience was screaming out.

Also, DUDE CAN PLAY GUITAR.

Never was a big fan in the past but have a lot of respect for him as a musician. That said, I actually like him better now than I did when he was cranking out albums.

And then somebody sent me a link to this performance and I like him even more now:

Yes, this, a hundred times over.

I was lucky enough to catch Prince two years ago. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen. Totally amazing. And tickets were only $20, so, doubly amazing. :)

Yep. Agreed here. Prince's concerts were two of the best live shows I've ever seen. He was better before he went all Jehovah's Witness (mainly because he currently has a tendency to get a little preachy/gospel at some point in his shows) but it's worth the JW moments to witness one of the most talented performers of the 20th and 21st century in action.

Prince is a great guitarist, no question, but the best guitar player of all time...OF ALL TIME...has to be Dean Ween. He'll never be acknowledged because of how odd Ween is as a band, but having seen Deaner play Pumpin 4 Tha Man live, I know the truth. Prince is Dead  (PrID)

After filming "Purple Rain", in late 1985, at the end of the "Purple Rain" tour, Prince Rogers Nelson died in a tragic motorcycle accident. Considering the success of "Purple Rain" and the fact that Prince was reaching his peak at the time of his demise, those close to him made the decision to replace him with a double, heavily modified with cosmetic surgery. Government ties ensured that the secret remained buried.

img.fark.net
The real Prince, sometime around 1980.

This double differed from Prince in several ways:

He was shorter.
He was a bit more pale skinned.
He was a devout Jehovah's Witness with reservations about singing "dirty songs".
His voice is close, but not identical to the original's.
Prince had a great sense of humor. The new one didn't take a joke very well.
The new one is younger by several years (how many is uncertain)
The new one's name was Christopher.

img.fark.net
Christopher in character as Prince

Prince still had a large catalog of music that was unreleased, and they figured they could float on that for a long time, or at least re-record it with the new Prince.

Immediately, it was announced that Prince would discontinue live performances and music videos. This was because Christopher wasn't quite ready to be seen.

Prince was almost finished recording "Around The World In A Day" when he died.

The first album featuring the new Prince was "Around the World in a Day", on the track "The Ladder".  His voice is noticeably lower in pitch on this song. He also insisted on re-editing the song "Temptation" to be less "sex oriented" and turned it to a religiously-oriented song of judgment, instead of the testament to sexual indulgence it was originally.

"Hello" is a Prince song reworked into a Christopher song, and renamed to "introduce" Christopher to the world, and describe his introduction to being famous.  "I tried to tell them that I didn't want to sing..."  It was also a response to Christopher's hesitation to join "Live Aid" because he wasn't quite ready for an event so close to Prince's former friends and colleagues in the music industry.

img.fark.net
The real Prince with Vanity, early 1980s.

Christopher began doing videos as Prince when the sales of "Around the World in a Day" started to stall. The first video he did was "Raspberry Beret".

Christopher-Prince credited himself as "Christopher" on the Bangles' song "Manic Monday", among others.

The Revolution didn't like the new Prince, and they actively worked to out him, but they were told that if they revealed the truth, they would be killed. It wasn't long after the new Prince's debut that the Revolution disbanded.

img.fark.net
One of the last publicity photos Prince posed for, before his untimely death.

Clues are scattered through all albums from 1985 onward; Especially in soundtrack to Batman. "Batdance" is practically a retelling of Prince's death and the disdain that Christopher feels for his predecessor's sinful lifestyle.

To his credit, Christopher is an amazing performer, but he's not as open-minded as Prince was.

The New Power Generation was formed to cover up Christopher's inability to produce a whole album on his own (as was evidenced by the poor reviews of "Batman") - Christopher doesn't perform very much on "Diamonds & Pearls" because this was an attempt to shift the focus from Prince to the band. It didn't work out.

The cover of "The Hits/The B-Sides" is meant to be viewed sideways, to show a "dead" Prince Rogers Nelson laying in repose.

img.fark.net
Prince lies in repose on the cover of "The Hits/The B-Sides"

The total shift in musical style was because Christopher was simply uninterested in Prince's former bare-bones Funk style, feeling more at home with R&B and Soul with more "spiritual" lyrics. While the original Prince was a devout Christian, he was not as restricted by his religious background as Christopher was. Christopher even refused to perform any of Prince's "racy" songs in concert.

Christopher spent a lot of time learning to dance like Prince from James Brown himself, who was commissioned for the job in exchange for lesser penalties for his crimes.

img.fark.net
Christopher in a recent candid shot.

Basically, songs after 1985 that are explicitly sexual are old Prince songs that were in his catalog of unreleased tracks when he died.

"Under The Cherry Moon" was chock full of clues (both the movie and the soundtrack, "Parade".)  A lot of the music in "Parade" was written by Wendy & Lisa, or adapted from Prince's older works. "New Position" is one such song that was written and demoed by Prince prior to his death, but rerecorded with Prince's vocals by the Revolution. "Sometimes it Snows in April" was about Prince. They filmed in France to avoid the American press, and American film unions. The theme of Christopher being a gigolo was to parallel the idea of him being paid to replace another man. This was entirely Christopher's project.

The whole "The Artist Formerly Known As Prince" thing was Christopher's attempt to get out from under the Prince legacy. It failed.

"Camille", the Prince alter-ego, is actually code for "naughty" songs that were performed or written by Prince. Christopher tried not to take credit for them by saying it was "Camille" who performed them.

"My Name is Prince" is a declaration of Christopher taking Prince's name and making what he sees as positive changes in Prince's reputation.

"The Black Album" is the real Prince's last album, and Christopher did everything he could to prevent its release, wanting to avoid having the "dirty" Prince back in the public eye. He said his decision to prevent its release was due to a "spiritual epiphany."

Christopher was trying desperately to "reform" Prince's image to fit his own sensibilities, but audiences weren't as interested in this toned down, more spiritual Prince. His albums sales slipped, and his response was "Graffiti Bridge", which is meant as Christopher's sequel/answer to "Purple Rain".  In it, the Kid, now played by Christopher, laments people turning away from his music because he's spiritual, and wins out in the end because of his faith.

img.fark.net
Christopher after his falling out with The Revolution

The Love Symbol as a name was another part of Christopher's attempt to break away from Prince's legacy. "The Artist" was so sick of being called "Prince" that he simply flipped out for a while and refused to acknowledge the name of his dead predecessor.

In 2001 Christopher took his religion public by having "Prince" get baptized as a Jehovah's Witness. This was sold as a "conversion" but was just a cover for the religion he'd always had, since before becoming Prince.

Christopher was having increasing problems being Warner Bros' Prince stand-in. He didn't like the direction they wanted him to go. He didn't like the contract he was under. He hated being Prince during this period in time, and was told that if he revealed the truth he would be "taken care of."  He responded by writing "Slave" on his cheek and releasing albums only to fulfill his contract with Warner Bros.

He called his album "Emancipation" because he felt that he was finally stepping free from Prince's shadow, and was free to do his own thing as long as he never openly revealed the truth. However, he continued to seed his music with references to his true identity. Warner made some requests, but gave him more creative control than they previously had in these final days of his contract with them.

On May 16, 2000 Christopher stopped using the Love Symbol and returned to allowing himself to be called "Prince", once he was out from Warner's control. The company felt he had dried up as an artist, and didn't pressure him anymore. He was free to perform whatever he pleased now. He immediately started producing albums that were essentially gospel recordings, leaving his old "naughty" image behind himself forever.

In 2008, Christopher went on record that he considers homosexuality a sin- Something the original Prince, who had his performers and bandmates simulate lesbian sex on stage, would never have done.

Despite his distaste for Prince's behavior and songs, Christopher has turned into a skilled performer in his own right. For all intents and purpose, Christopher is the only Prince, now.

bigbabysurfer: gilgigamesh: I feel obligated to say this in any Prince thread: if youve
never seen him live, do it. Do it now. It doesnt matter what it costs. It doesn't matter if you're a fan, or not. Even if you aren't, you will be by the end of the show.

No one can put on a show like Prince, no one can play guitar like him. It isn't enough to see on video. You have to be in the room to really feel it.

I say again: before you depart this earth, go see this weird, effeminate purple wearing midget play his guitar. You can thank me later.

Wow, that's great. I'm surprised though, I sort of thought that Prince didn't have much of a sense of humor as evidenced by his attitude toward Weird Al Yancovic;
"On numerous occasions, Prince has refused Yankovic permission to record parodies of his songs. Yankovic has stated in interviews that he has "approached him every few years [to] see if he's lightened up." Yankovic related one story where, before the American Music Awards where he and Prince were assigned to sit in the same row, he got a telegram from Prince's lawyers, demanding he not make eye contact with the artist."

When the Chappelle did that skit on his show I just assumed Prince might not see the humor, but this really is a great example of a classy response to somebody poking a little fun at him.

Ok, I watched this again because I can't seem to stay asleep. And let me tell you, Prince represents why we all got into air guitar in the first place. Before him, air guitar was a sloppy art. He perfected it and showed a generation how to confidently enter air contests at bars around the world.

Too bad none of us can actually play the actual instrument like he can but hey, better the minor league than nothing.

My aunt used to take fiddle lessons from Alison before she got famous. My aunt still has some of her early demo cassettes, too. Having had a chance to see her live (playing Bluegrass), I can attest her talent, as well her band Union Station. In fact, her and I grew up in the same neck of the woods, and she's only 7 days older than me.

I think my cousin is a better violin player, but that in no way detracts from Alison being a world class violinist herself. I can't express that enough, she is a World Class Violinist, with very few peers in her realm of talent.
