Not really poo either, technically..

It's actually a bowel blockage. The reason it floats up on the beach is because it killed the sperm whale that produced it and then eventually broke loose from the rotting corpse.

Much like anything else in a mammal's body, it can come out either way. It really comes down to a personal preference of wanting to admit you're either holding whale poo or whale puke.

/I'd prefer puke

You'd think the squid beaks/etc would constitute the actual poop. From my understanding , it looks like ambergris is more of to uhh..ease the friction and keep things from jabbing the sides. So is it a coating..or ?

There's a reason perfume is known as "eau de toilette" (i.e., "toilet water")...

There's this thing called a "pig" that oil workers send down the oil pipeline to clear up any blockages.  Maybe it's like that ..

""These structures, derived from the original fossil ambergris masses, represent the first recovery on a global scale, since nothing like (it) has been described befosquid beaksre in the scientific literature," lead study author Angela Baldanza, a sedimentary geologist at the University of Perugia in Italy, said in an email interview."

Squid beaks!

As a former professional nose, I would like to say it smells like puke, and any nose that says other wise is broken, and should be broken.

Be honest. How many of you would pay between $0.99 and $2.99 for a talking dictionary read with sarcasm and jokes by Roseanne? But I would be willing to pay for a dictionary app on my Touch provided it was cheap and quite comprehensive.

I can remember when Roseanne was funny, petite and pretty. I believe it was in the early 1980s when she was just starting out at that famous Comedy club in LA. Her hair dates her. Have you ever noticed that you can date a historical movie by the hair styles? Sometimes you can date certain scenes by the model of watch one of the actors is wearing. Ancient Romans were fond of Timex watches from the 1950s and early 60s.

And despite what the pearl industry says, natural pearls are generally formed around a parasite rather than a grain of sand. The nacre's role is to protect the oyster from the parasite. It seems that most really expensive luxuries are nasty things of the sort that normal, which is to say poor, people, would avoid.

Steak or fish eggs?
A good pork chop or the degenerate fatty liver of a force-fed goose?
Mock turtle soup or strangle a poor turtle to death slowly using its own weight?
Mushrooms or some sort of black fungus dug up by trained pigs?
A nice Beaujolais or some vile dry wine that's been in the bottle since your grandpa was in short pants?
Trout or snails?

See, the rich only like things that disgust normal people, like depressions and foreclosures and trashing the social security net, stealing pension funds, and electing vile stupid Republicans and the occasional vile stupid Democrat.

GK Chesterton, who as a sort of romantic Roman Catholic conservative socialist (don't try to figure that out or it'll twist your brain into knots), noted this proclivity in the rich. He attributed their love of early breakfast prayer meetings, cold showers, teetotalitarianism, and simple bread and water diets to there contempt for the normal man. They might willingly give up steak, potatoes and beer, but they would sooner die than give up aides and other real luxuries of no interest to the common man.

Rich people are dicks, just like poor people. Their dickery is simply more expensive and contrived.

They will pay tens of millions of dollars for an empty glass box, a house with no bookshelves (the rich only read catalogs), furniture so spartan that you can't sit or sleep on it. It's all show. Nothingness and sterile empty modernism is the ultimate luxury because no sensible ordinary mortal wants it.

2013-08-19 04:38:46 PM
Conceptual art is just modern sterility piled higher and deeper.

Who but a rich man (or woman) would pay $125,000 for 12 pencils with broken tips? No poor man would even contemplate such a folly, even if he had a winning Superball ticket in hand and nobody to share it with.

Dickery. It's all dickery. Of course, this is especially true of mimes and performance artists.

"We are investigating the causes of such accumulation in a restricted area," Baldanza said.

I'd hypothesize some sort of beaching event where an entire pod of whale swam up on a beach and couldn't get back into the water and died.

The disturbing thing is there are those who eat it too. One of the latest Bizarre Foods America showed some people at a higher end 'experimental' resturant who ground up some ambergris and used it like a garnish.

Raise the sail off the stage
I'm stuck on this sand bar
And the seagulls are wondering what's up
As the waves peel like a sheet
That's not tucked in
Washing in all that white foam
What is that stuff anyway?
It's the spit of a whale
But the waves they don't care, they were born out at sea
And they live to crash

what I don't get is why it was banned. it's not like you could kill a whale and try to dig around in its intestines for it... or maybe some people tried to do just that *yikes* ... in which case I'm glad it was banned.

8/10. Well done. Yet, as just one example, the poors/"normals"(?) don't know what the fark "a nice Beaujolais" is. You shoulda gone with a nice, sweet muscat, like the several varieties/brands of which you see in every Southern 7-11 next to the fruity shiat and the tall boys.

Good Modernist furniture, on the other hand....

But you know this. I look forward to your newsletter.
