2011 Vermont says hi.

When hurricanes run into mountains, it is like squeezing out a waterlogged sponge.  right over top the mountains.

Yup, she remembers you. But it was "itches", and some aren't responding to penicillin.

I thought the 16 inches or whatever it was that Atlanta got in 3 days in 2009 was bad enough.

It is weird dumping out the rain gauge multiple times during a rainstorm because it is overflowing.

I remember that storm. It washed away the small garden we had, and we lived out in south Stafford County. It made quite an impression on this child.

The Indians laugh at you, Virginia.

No, not those Indians -  these. They deal with this crap every year... though there is something to be said about the element of surprise.

Vermont got hit really hard but it didn't get anything like 27" of rain.  That's just absurd.

Before I moved to British Columbia I never knew what "rain shadow" meant. Sweet term, dramatic contrast in rainfall and vegetation on mountainsides.

Extra tropical lows can do amazing things.

Ask anyone who was in the lower Ohio valley (especially around northern Cincinnati) when the remnants of hurricane Ike came through..

Blue sky 75mph+ winds for hours.

It was so surreal.

Heck, when Sandy came through, we had 50+MPH winds in Michigan, and my parents had their power knocked out in Cleveland because of the 70+ MPH winds they had there.

Hong Kong laughs at your namby-pamby 3.4 inches per hour. The record for rainfall there is 5.7 inches per hour.

(I grant you, managing 3.4 inches per hour for eight hours straight is pretty spectacular, though. HK's record in 24 hours works out to be 21 inches.)

I always thought "Who'll Stop The Rain" was a war protest song and the rains lyrics were used because of all the rain at Woodstock.

Meh. Thats the same weather I get when I try to take my family camping. True story.

Also, Compare Camille's death toll with Katrina. That is mind blowing.

Damn.  My county's gotten 27 inches in 24 hours (lost a bridge or two, but otherwise not much happened since this whole place is made out of porous rock and it soaks right in) but in 8?  That's insane.

It's all impressive, spectacular, etc. Unless you are currently in it, then it is also scary.

Also, Holt, Missouri 1947: 12" rainfall in 42 minutes (also in one hour). Yikes.

Dazrin: Also, Holt, Missouri 1947: 12" rainfall in 42 minutes (also in one hour). Yikes.

That's not raining. That's a vertical swimming pool.

And yes, it's scary when you're in it. I wasn't there for that Hong Kong record, but I saw *close* when I lived there. It was raining so hard that miles of pedestrian underpasses near the old Kai Tak airport flooded to street level (they had to send scuba divers in there to be sure nobody was trapped), great big chunks of concrete street (not sidewalk!) paving were lifting up under the force of rain water building up underneath them and washing off down the road, geysers of water were spraying 4-6 feet or more in the air from every drain on some streets near where I lived, a kid was washed into a storm drain and drowned, you name it.

Crazy shiat.

Alvin, Tx (just south of Houston) got 43 inches in 24 hours in 1979.  Imagine the hardest rain you've ever seen, then imagine it going on for hours.
