Are you serious? Someone rips apart a greeting cards electronics and tapes it to a deodorant with packaging tape and they are a genius? And then it gets green lit? This world if freaking retarded. It is not even like he had to hack the electronics, it was a record your own message deal where he just recorded the theme from another audio source.

Most great inventions/sellers/ideas are actually not new. They take certain things and apply them to something else and then someone goes "wow..why didn't I think of that".

It's actually a neat idea/concept and I wouldn't be surprised to see Old Spice actually come out with a container that does this.

You naysayers are complete idiots.   Just try it for yourselves.

Taping an audio chip to my Old Spice reduced the required processing cycles to apply deodorant to my underarms by 14%.  The execs are going crazy for this shiat and I finally got that 14% raise I've been requesting.

Also, if the editor will let me, what a hack may look like:

var rowIndex = $parentRow[0].sectionRowIndex;
        if (rowIndex > 1) {
            if ($(".hiddenJqueryScrollHelperClassSelector").attr("value") === "true") {
                var cell = $parentCell;
                if (cell[0].offsetTop + cellHeight >= $webPartDiv.height() - cellHeight) {
                    $webPartDiv.scrollTop(cell[0].offsetTop - 2);
                }
                $(".hiddenJqueryScrollHelperClassSelector").attr("value", "false");
            }
        }

Jeez havent people been doing this since those cards came out? Hell someone at my office attached one to someone desk drawer so everytime he opened it music played.

My issue is not the ease with which this was accomplished it is that he only covered part of the requirements.   It does not stop playing when you put the cap back on and requires significant effort to reset.  Here he is only showing that the basic idea is possible; which is a tech demo and not so much a demoable prototype.  His string solution does not suggest any easy way to accomplish these requirements.  As an engineer he will have to learn to come up with solutions which cover all of the forward requirements and can deal with the negative cases in a professional manner.  He shows creativity and initiative, but he will have to work on coming up with more complete solutions.

/good job on figuring out how the card sensor works, keep taking stuff apart kid

If by "hack" you mean "hack job", then yes, it was hacked.
