Judging from that Top Gear episode, I'm pretty this will be a one-sided war.

Kind of a waste of gas, they cannot and will not engage Spain in a military conflict over Gibraltar.

Or it might be a repeat from last year when several ships stopped in on the way to the previous years installment of the same series of training exercises.

It's just a pre-planned military exercise.  OK I'm starting to find it suspicious that we have a pre-planned military exercise whenever this type of thing happens, take for example the Falklands.

Perhaps when they say pre-planned they mean planned last week.

Spain is doing exactly what Argentina did in the 80s and is doing now, fabricating a war to divert their people from the dire economy.
Spain also has two enclaves on the Moroccan coast exactly like Gibraltar, bit it's not giving those up....

Spain will continue to whine about Gibraltar just as Argentina whines about the Falklands. Reminds me of the Old man yelling at the cloud.

Umm.....subby? In 1585, the Spanish sent warships to the British coast. This would be more revenge than repeat, don't you think?

You know people often accuse nations of doing this anyway, but in this case England and Spain are LITERALLY fighting over a bloody ROCK

Which happens to be a fantastic control over the entrance or exit to the Med. So yeah, a worthless rock.

Nothing will come of this, of course.

But I wonder, what is the official procedure if two NATO countries went to war? Were Turkey and Greece members back when they last duked it out?

That is so incorrect that I don't know where to begin.  You do realise that there are monkeys on that rock, don't you?  And a few cars...some scrubby little bushes.  Now, don't you feel like an idiot?!

Agreed, this sounds like much more of a repeat from 1805.  They should invite the French as well.

1587 (Drake's raid on Cadiz) and 1625 (Anglo-Dutch expedition against Cadiz) would have been more appropriate, subby.

But if you guys [Britain and Spain] are going to go at it, GLHF.  I could use something other than baseball to watch on TV.

FTFY

/any attempt to hold Gibraltar as a way to seal off the Med would last just long enough for the first cruise missiles to arrive
//furthermore, who needs a fortress to destroy shipping in an inland sea anymore? missiles and bombers launched from land would accomplish the mission just fine

Uh, because you saw a toll road people refuse to use, an private airport that's bankrupt and houses build during a boom period?

Top Gear isn't a documentary about millitary forces.

And while there obviously won't be any war, there's nothing the UK could do to prevent Spain from just taking Gibraltar given its location.

So when is Spain planning on declaring independence for Granada?

Next target: The French.

Just to point out how much the papers are overblowing this - these same ships also docked in Rota (a Spanish port) on the way to the exercise.

Source for the first part, or are you just making it up?

Yeah, Spain is a bit hypocritical really. But perhaps in their head their enclaves are totally different.

You mean apart from the garrison thats sitting in one of the best forts in europe. One that unless Spain wants to carpet bomb the entire area and kill every civilian will hold out until the cruise missiles start hitting Spanish military bases.

Um, diamonds are near-worthless rocks. The diamond cartels have been artificially maintaining scarcity to keep prices high for over a century now.

The Brits outnumber the Spanish almost 2-1 in terms of ground units, aircraft and warships. The Spanish MIGHT be able to take Gibraltar but could never hold it. As was mentioned above: this won't turn into an armed conflict.
