Just wait until they hear about the literal pipe-dream that is the hyperloop.

*guffaws, +1s the thread*

Sounds like all they'd need to do is exchange text messages with the driver.

2013-08-19 11:51:50 AM
Why?  What's Europe doing?

2013-08-19 11:52:43 AM
The US government is perfectly able to 'target' US citizens, it does not need help from Al Qaeda anymore.

Ouch. Even more brutal than subby.

Does anybody else have their local government shilling a "streetcar" project? Maybe we could convince Al Qaeda to target those worthless pieces of crap that everyone swears up and down "will pay for itself without tax money" but never does.

Target AMTRAK and inadvertently put the train back on the track with an explosion.

2013-08-19 11:58:56 AM
Subby is technically right.  Al Qaeda would be saving lives by targeting Acela.   The Acela up here is seemingly only used by addicts for suicide.  You know if Acela goes down it will have been a government conspiracy to draw 24/7 viewers to Fox News and the internet.  Again.

It's really incredible hard to do harm to a train unless you actually do get a bomb on it..

Great point and great video, but I don't think 26 mph is high speed rail.

When targeting the new high speed rail that go at over 100 mph, the same physics probably does not apply.

Some are in the states and Europe.

I know a walking-speed rail right along my work commute that they could take out if their other plans fall through.

According to US media reports, intelligence services intercepted a conference call earlier this month between Al-Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri and more than 20 operatives from across the group's global network.

I wonder how those conference calls go?  Does someone forget to to turn on mute?? Who falls asleep?

Welcome to the Al Qeada Conference line please enter your Conference # followed by your 6 digit passcode
*Abdelkarim miss-dials the pass code and has to recall and try again...*

Abdelkarim: Welcome guys this should be a quick 30 minute call.  I just want to get everyone's status.
*sounds of goats or something in the background*
Abdelkarim: Ali, for the last time turn on mute.
Ali Saeb Bin: What?
Abdelkarim: On the keypad hit mute
Ali Saeb Bin: Oh, ok
*beep* Saif al-Adel has joined the conference line
Saif al-Adel: Sorry guys I forgot we had the meeting today
Abdelkarim: Abdullah - what is your status update
*a minute goes by*
Abdelkarim: Abdullah??
Abdullah: Sorry I forgot I was on mute
*sounds of snoring*
Abdelkarim: Sigh.... Ayman wake up!

GoodOmens: Does someone forget to to turn on mute??

More importantly, do they have an announcer speaking for 5 seconds when they toggle their mute, missing important parts of the discussion?

They could simply train (no pun intended) their shock troops to be train conductors and then have them speed through dangerous turns. It would likely be easier than building and transporting bombs that may or may not be effective.

Seems like this intel is a few weeks old considering all the derailments we were hearing about recently.

Yet another "plot" to wave at the public that will never materialize.

If they build the line from LA to Las Vegas, and can get you between the two cities in less than half an hour, that farker will pay itself off in a year.

Portland already has two of them. One is convenient to get around downtown, the other just opened and isn't really finished yet. I'd prefer they don't bomb either of them.

Al-Qaeda is plotting attacks on Europe's high-speed rail network, German mass circulation daily Bild reported on Monday, citing intelligence sources.

Bild is the National Enquirer of the German News circuit. I would not take anything they write too litterally.

I just hope they keep all their security bullshiat out of train travel.

Seconded.  I notice the Germans are a little more low-key about it... although probably equally effective:

"Authorities in Germany have responded to the threat with discrete measures such as deploying plain-clothed police officers at key stations and on main routes, according to the daily."

DC has streetcars rotting in a lot somewhere. Everytime I hear "It will pay for itself" they may as well say "Bend over and take it!"

How much money do we have to spend so we can feel safe again?

2013-08-19 01:52:19 PM
But you only find high speed rail in developed countries like Germany, Japan, or Canada.

NSA intercepted a conference call...

/sure they did. Because the most advanced turrorist organization on the planet is really stupid enough to discuss something like this on a Conference call.

So the NSA is also going to admit they are tapping every call in Saudi and Afghanistan?

"The most advanced" isn't necessarily very advanced.

We have to give it all to our already fabulously wealthy betters.

Technically, it is feasible (which is what the proof of concept document was about). Whether or not we have the political will and capital to do it is a different can of worms. I have my doubts, since the government can't even decide how to tie their own shoes. It is a paradigm shift in ground transit waiting to happen though.

When targeting the new high speed rail that go at over 100 mph, the same physics probably does not apply.

In fact, my hunch is that there is a logarithmic function at work.  Double the speed and it becomes far, far more likely that there will be a catastrophic derailment.  If one car jumps, the higher speed will mean kablooey.

2013-08-19 03:25:50 PM
They don't actually need to attack anymore. They just 'make plans' to attack, let the plans leak, and we'll do more economic damage over-reacting than from an actual attack.

Could be. Or, higher speed might just mean the train is even more likely to just jump right over any gaps in the track.

I'll see the California Zephyr pass by my window in the next 4-6 hours so blah blah blah

There's an easier way to cripple America than flying 747's into two buildings but I'm not going to tell you how to do it. No, not for you.

That's a bingo.

As I recall. it was OBL's master plan all along to destroy us economically, rather than physically. Just needed a little effort on their part and at this point, we're doing it all by ourselves.

That wasn't a proof of anything. That was just a rich guy masturbating in public.
