How are the sponsors getting out of paying out? I don't see it in the article.

They're counting on the kid not being able to afford the other 7 semesters.

His foot was over the line in the video or he's black. Something the insurance company paying for this will look to try to get out of it.

If he'd missed, he would have gotten 2 semesters.

That's the only way someone should attend Ball State. Being paid to be there.

How many universities do you see being founded by rich people these days? Yeah, exactly. They want to take the money they've separated from the lower classes and leave the country with it.

Um...around here (in the SEC) Universities have been giving 8 semesters of free tuition *plus* room-and-board to kids who can hit shots from 1/2 court for at least 75 years now.

The kid probably already has his High School equivalency diploma.

I don't know. Making some kid make half court shots until he is 75 years old THEN sending off him to university seems cruel. By then, his dick will have fallen off so why bother being a freshman?

Just wait until he see's how much his books are going to cost.  He'll be dropping out at that point.

Our education system is more of a punchline  than an education system. Pretty much the entire rest of the civilized world says that when people want to get smarter and obtain higher paying jobs (and pay higher taxes), the government should help them get that education free of charge. Ours says you need to go to businesses and depend on their charity, or throw balls down a basketball court really well, or play football if you want to be a doctor, engineer, or chemist. Alternately, you can saddle yourself with more debt than a house costs, and hope for the best.

Tuition paid, but he's not out of debt yet:

- Books and 'required materials' - about $800 per semester
- University Technology Fee - $336 per year
- Recreation Center Fee - $174 per year
- Health Center Fee - $152 per year
- Room and Board - $7500 and up per year
- Residence Hall Technology Fee - $120.00 per year

Since he's an Indiana resident, the tuition for Ball State is only about $4200 per term, assuming 12-18 hours of instruction.

I got paid to be there. BSU State Scholar (paid tuition & fees), and later added Army VEAP and Pell. I actually made money going to school.

I can't brag too much - I still graduated from Ball U.

Ball U was founded by the brothers that built the Ball Canning Jar company - so we referred to it as "Fruit Jar U" among other things.

In the Administration building, there's a painting of the brothers, donated by the family. The plaque underneath reads:

"Hung by the Balls."

And Excise busted like 50 kids for underage drinking on the WEEKEND BEFORE school started!

I started at BSU and I transferred because the overriding concern on campus is always when the next party/drink will be.  I guess it is like that on most campuses (I transferred to a commuter campus and they are a lot different) but it just annoyed the hell out of me.  I was one of those few students that actually wanted to learn.

Decades ago when I was a little asshole in high school I made a full court shot in gym class.  I was dribbling a basketball when I  <can't remember, some little asshole thing> and the teacher kicked me out of class.  I threw the ball as hard as I could across the gym and damned if it did go in the basket.  It wasn't a clean drop so when it went in it bounced like crazy inside the hoop before it dropped.  B-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b-b.  Mind you, I am the least athletically gifted person I know and something about making a layup shot escapes me (seriously, I usually trip and fall).

The entire class, including the teacher, stared at me with their jaws hanging.

The rest of the civilized world does not say anything at all like that. What they say is basically socialism. It's not free of charge. It's paid for by everyone through taxes, the same as health care. I agree with socialized education and healthcare, for the record. I'm just pointing out that it is most definitely not free.

Interesting factoid: people in the US who enjoy much lower tax rates than most of those nations biatch about their taxes far more. Seriously, I pay 24% federal tax here in WA state. It's ridiculous IMHO how little I have to pay. And yet Americans will biatch about it all day long, while most people in the first world are easily paying 1.5x that with much higher taxes on stuff like gasoline as well.

Challenge accepted, cept I guess this doesn't count as "meeting me".

Muncie, Crawfordsville, Evansville, Valparaiso, West Lafayette etc - toured the minor league party IN schools to hone skills.  Mostly a waste of time.  But out of them <-  Muncie had the best Pizza.  (Valpo had the best Beer).

BSU/Muncie fun fact: Papa John got his start delivering for Greek's Pizza in Muncie. Doesn't make the pizza any better, though.
