Weirdness. I'll take my Dolly high and fast, thanks.

that shows just how good she really is. The slowing down should have magnified any problems with her performance, instead it was just as good either way. It sounds like some sort of gay fellow pining for his bi lover.

This is really spot on. She makes fun of her voice all the time but she is actually an amazing singer.

Well, she does tend to sing with a very sibilant 's' on her words.

Had a friend who liked to get baked and listen to 45s at 33. The Dust Brothers Fight Club soundtrack was surprisingly good that way.

Proof that Dolly enunciates very very well. My wife walked in while I was playing it, commented that she really liked the "new" version and wanted to know who was signing it.

It's so easy to forget how good a musician she was in her early years, because of all the extreme boobage that eclipsed the rest of her career. But young Dolly could still blow must modern country singers out of the water.

I'm skeptical. Is it really simply Dolly Parton slowed down? She sang it with vibrato

Great song, regardless.

Lo those many years ago, circa 1988, my college roommate and I would tell each other to "be Dolly Parton!"

Meaning buck up, be positive, when life sucks you still have a duty to be fun and friendly like Dolly Parton for your friends.

It's a pretty good bet that most things are tuned these days. They're just good at it now.

But, no matter how good of an engineer is editing, you can't fake some of this stuff. She's definitely a good singer, but they most definitely spot tuned a note here or there. No real evidence of artifacts, just making an educated guess.

This is a really good vocal track except that it's a bit over-compressed. Pretty surprised when I heard it.

She's too far ahead of the beat. One of the genius things Parton does is hang a millisecond behind when she sings. She makes you wait for her.

This IS a pretty great version. I got a lot of love for Dolly, and have since I was a kid.

While we're throwing around versions of Jolene though, let me add Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies...

Autotune only does so much. I just listened to the other songs on Youtube from her Backyard Sessions and my opinion of her has changed dramatically. I guess that pop crap she puts out pays the bills, but damn she can sing when she wants to.

There was a song I enjoyed almost a decade ago that I used to listen to on The System on XM Radio. It was Xanadu by Kaos Karl K & Jae Kennedy. On XM radio, the song sounded like a very dark breakbeat/detroit techno style song. Whenever I found it elsewhere it was clearly drum&bass and not even an exceptional D&B song at that. One evening a few years back I thought, I wonder if someone played the record at the wrong speed. Sure enough, playing the original, which was a 45 RPM LP, at 33 1/3 RPM gives you the exact version heard on XM radio.

Having listened to the Backyard Sessions myself just now, I'm gonna go so far as to say that autotune actually makes her sound worse.  I always thought, based on her pop songs, that she was a crappy singer.  Those were something else entirely.  Here's hoping she gets to record an album of the music she actually likes someday.

I've never liked "Jolene" that much - given how many other great songs Dolly has written/recorded over the years, and her all-around awesomeness, I've never understood why that particular song is so popular.

Nina_Hartley's_Ass: Just a reminder, where she got her start.

Robbie Fulks did a killer cover some time ago, and it ranks up there with Don Henry's Where Have You Been, which he co-wrote with Kathy Mattea's husband some years ago, for simply being a song that you can't really listen to very often, because it just rips you up in side. I won't link it, because I have no need to kick up that much dust. Don Henry did some solo work, and his Wild in the Backyard highlights his songwriting--often sung by other artists, like Mattea. Robbie is no slouch in the songwriting department either, and he swings from sentimental to loud and crude, and then back into funny and bittersweet, and then on into classic country and honkeytonk. Robbie is one of my favorites of the "alt country" crowd, and I always find it somewhat funny that he is labeled as such, since he does such classic stuff, and very much in the spirit of the greats, and does his own spin.

There is Sofa King much great Country out there, but damned if it ain't hard to find it on the dial nowadays, unless you are tuned into the scene, and just listen to the Pop Country charts...

Who said she got sucky? She just got more famous for the tits and the theme park than her actual talent.
