Lemme see if I get this. In his last 5 months in office Bloomberg should independently declare pot legal in NYC and suddenly the tax revenue will flow. Brilliant.

He had his police force invade New Jersey, so I don't see the pot thing as much of a stretch.

If he dressed up in a tri corner with tea bags hanging from it it would totally work, because he could just nullify Federal law.

looks like pot has become the new gay marriage as the thing to be promoted. works for me, we will need the revenue as regular cigarettes are vilified and sales drop.

I still hope in my lifetime we can put this nonsense behind us - much like the gay marriage issue is slowly fading away. I've been an avid smoker for the past decade, but recently had to stop because I am hoping to get a job that unfortunately, randomly tests. I can piss with bottles full of whisky and oxycontin in me, but weed is the dealbreaker. What a country.

Well, now that the cops can't order brown people to commit a crime by emptying their pot into plain view, might as well start selling it and taking their money.

It's a pipe dream.  Once you legalize it, the price falls drastically, and the taxes brought in reduce greatly.  I support legalization, but the tax argument is a BS sales pitch

Is anyone really going to trust John Liu? The man who's dad was convicted of bank fraud? The man who tells a sob-story of how he had to work in a sweatshop with his mom as a child (a story even his mom denies)?

He was even denied matching campaing funds, because everything this guy does is shady.

He doesn't have to nullify federal law.  Obama said the feds wouldn't make going after marijuana a priority in states where it was legal.

Ha.

BAHAHAHAHahahAHAahahahahahbahaha

Oh, that felt good.

Yeah, just look at what happened when we legalized booze. We hardly get any taxes from that at all.

How do you reduce taxes that hadn't been implemented yet?

I got an idea! Let's just keep pot illegal and tax it.

Would absolutely adore for this to happen and frankly I already have several friends with whom I've discussed opening up a cafe or smoke shop upon legalization.  This will NEVER happen under Bloomberg's tenure, but if it does I will cordially and happily invite folks to attend the opening and hat eating ceremony.

Or cigarettes, it's not like cigarette taxes have helped balance numerous state budgets, find healthcare initiatives, education or anything like that...

I live in Philadelphia, and every time there's random, unexplained fireworks (which is often), my first question is: are we finally shelling New Jersey?

Yup. And marijuana isn't taxed AT ALL right now. So any tax collection at all, at any price, will be an increase in revenue. Given the many millions of people that smoke it, and presumably some number more held back by its current illegality, that's going to be some hefty tax revenue at any price.

NYC Comptroller discovers a way to generate 400 million in extra revenue?

Is Spitzer gonna legalize prostitution finally?

No, wait. That election isn't until September.

*clicks article*

Ohhhhhhh. Liu says to legalize and tax pot. Well, yeah, that would work too.
