Okay, I get wanting a puppy and not being able to pay the extravagant prices that for some unknown reason to me pure bred dogs bring, but stealing one will do you no good.  If you want a puppy for free or cheap, it isn't hard to find.  However it doesn't do you any good to have a pure bred dog and no proof of its pedigree.  $100-$200 is the breeding and care costs, the remaining amount is the cost of getting the papers.  I haven't bought a dog yet, but I am not paying pedigree paper prices.

/I am hoping this little clueless twit doesn't become one of those people that tire of the dog once it is grown

A good pet from a good breeder (that comes with a spay/neuter agreement) will run you about $300 in my experience (which is with pugs). Maybe $400.

$700 for a pet store puppy is just pet store bullshiat.

The dog was apparently returned (probably after the story broke) but they are still going to press charges.

I have heard of much higher prices depending on the breed and if the dog is descended from a show dog.  Which proves some people don't deserve their money.

Depending on the breed even $700 can be cheap, but the dog should come from PROVEN healthy breeding stock. You don't just pay for the dog, you also pay for the bloodline (good hips, elbows and eyes) not to mention at least the first set of shots, and worming. That's all for breeds that can have puppies naturally, one you throw in a c-section it can be in the thousands for some.

So stupid - a large percentage of pet store dogs are from puppy mills and are often sick to boot. At the place I used to work for, I spotted the incoming slip on the boss's desk, only to discover that they were all coming from two different places in PA, and two-thirds of them came in with kennel cough or worse. $700 is nothing, a cute little dust mop I enjoyed cuddling was over $2000. Moral of the story, get shelter dogs/mutts. Much cheaper, you're saving a critter from death, and they're much, MUCH healthier than purebreeds, who frequently suffer from a variety of genetic maladies caused by inbreeding.

On a brighter note, glad to see sweater kitten has already been covered.

Also, for today's fun factoid, a few breeds have high rates of c-sections: http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/peterwedderburn/9405067/why_do_over _ 80_per_cent_of_bulldog_births_happen_by_caesarian_section/   I was surprised to see Irish Wolfhounds among them.

They usually steal the puppy because they think they can sell it and make some cash. It never works that way, though. Once it's all over the news, people are going to be on the lookout for the dog.

The puppy is valued at $700

This is the crime.
There are so many dogs in the world we have to kill the extra ones, meanwhile pet stores make more and charge money for them.

2013-08-17 11:15:02 PM

Vector R: So stupid - a large percentage of pet store dogs are from puppy mills and are often sick to boot.

I adopted a puppy mill rescue a few years back--the rescue said that some breeds were not profitable, so the breeder just dumped off the "inventory" at the Humane Society.

That poor dog was the saddest thing ever. She didn't know what a bed was, didn't know what steak was, ran like a rabbit (probably from being stuffed in a too-small/short cage), and scared to death of anything outside of a crate.  She didn't even sleep soundly for the first few months because she spent the nights screaming, crying, and flailing around.

Anyone who thinks of buying a pet store dog should have a nice chat with the National Mill Rescue...then go to the shelter and get a pet from there. The puppy may be cute and adorable, but the parents are likely living in pure misery.
