Went to one once. Was slightly bemused at first, but after my third stein of beer (glass was as big as my head) I was having a damn good time! Almost seems worth a trip back.

Used to live in Milwaukee. The South Side is old school, one of those immigrant neighborhoods from the halcyon days when a blue collar job guaranteed a comfortable life for you and your family. They take their polka and beer very seriously on the South Side.

Any polka bar or German biergarten in the US is like this.  First 10 minutes you are saying to yourself "I can't believe I came here".  30 minutes later you are dancing a polka or singing in German with a Fraulein or panienka on your lap having the time or your life.

Seek out Brave Combo, farkers. They really are the best little bar band in Texas, that still plays in bars.

/ I recommend Polkas for a Gloomy World

2013-08-17 12:09:34 PM
Yep.  Polka is still huge.  Until very recently there was at least two 24-hour polka radio stations in Wisconsin.  I know of radio stations in Chicago and upstate New York that air polka shows.

/ Subby's got to turn off the iPod every once in a while and expand his horizons.

Goddamn right!
I still remember learning to Polka in grade school when they were teaching basic dance stuff in gym class. You'll often hear Polka somewhere at most county fairs in Wisconsin, and also in some town/city founding celebrations every year. Hell even some weddings for older folks you'll hear a Polka band or the DJ will bust out "Roll out the barrel".

We like our beer, our guns and our Polka.

Oh_Enough_Already: Was he "profiling" the robbers just because they were black teens wearing hoodies? He should have stayed in his bar!

I'm willing to bet that the two that got away weren't Laverne and Shirley.

2013-08-17 12:23:32 PM
Heck, it isn't just the bars. Both the Milwaukee Brewers and the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers (class A team) both play the "Beer Barrel Polka" during the 7th inning stretch.

Never been there, but Kochanski's is a pretty well-known place with lots of different kinds of live music. It's kind of a hipstery place these days, I think.

I'm sure one of the other Milwaukee Farkers has first hand experience with this place. (Cyno01?)

I grew up mainly on the west side of Cleveland. Down the street from my mother's house there was a guy who lived on the corner lot. He had a huge fence and a ton of kitsch all over his yard (the fence kept it in). Everyday, especially on weekends, he would blare polka. Probably getting drunk because he lived in Cleveland, but then again, there is a huge Polish, Czech, and Italian population there. Who knows...

Kumbia is the new polka.

Went to college in Pittsburg, KS. North of the town there were several bars that featured Polka bands and liquor by the drink (not legal in Kansas at the time). Some of my fondest memories were at the Club 69 (hwy 69). The locals loved us and our parents money. Damn, those Italian girls were beautiful. But you look into the kitchen and see their mothers, ugh.

/Love those memories.

It's a hipster bar in Milwaukee, besides we left old Style for dead to be consumed piss warm and over-priced for the Cubs fans a while ago.

No it's not.
It cumbia, first of all, not kumbia, and cumbia and polka have 2 totally different rhythms.

I was just back in Milwaukee a couple of weeks ago, and the polka radio station rules.

Props to Andy Kochanski for keeping his bar and his patrons safe.
That robbery could have had a much worse ending.

/protip: Kochanski's Concertina Beer Hall has a facebook page. :)

Yeah, I haven't been there myself but my sister-in-law's boyfriend is getting a blues-rock band going and he played a couple of dualing-band gigs there. Not just polkas all the time.

As someone who lives there now, it is a dirty shiathole that I cannot wait to be able to afford to move away from.  If my wife wasn't so close to her family, we would be out of WI completely.

There's a coffee table book about the place, published a couple years ago, that's full of photos of rockabilly bands. Dunno if that genre's still a big thing at the place or not.

Not possible. Fark-tards have assured us that the moment a gunowner tries to challenge an armed robber (let alone three) he will:

A) be gunned down
or
B) will send rounds into every puppy and kindergartener within 12 miles.

Guess the left lied to us.
