For me, it's "hello, insomnia!" Up at 4am and won't step away from the TV for at least the next 12 hours, all for football reasons (OK, the last 3 hours will be due to the other football, but it counts in my book).

Fark Fitba Prediction League.

This season sees the second annual Eff-Eff-Pee-'Ell mini-League within the main Talksport EPL predictions game. All welcome, no knowledge or experience required.

The logo is dead!

img.fark.net

Long live the new logo! [Thanks Mr_H]

 img.fark.net

I won't repeat much of the Talksport help/instruction pages here, but these comments and notes should get you started.

Go to: http://predictor.talksport.co.uk

Please join under your Fark name or close analogue.

Search for our private mini-league: FCB76-PVA

See the Talksports pages for help on making predictions. It is pretty simple. Predict scores for each match. There will be a variable number of matches in a round, but typically it will be 9-11 games. Occasionally, a team might appear twice [e.g. Saturday/Wednesday] or not at all.

After making your predictions, you may assign your Banker chip and your insurance chip. The Insurance protects you from negative points for that game, and the Banker chip multiplies the points from that game - whether positive or negative!

Click submit and you are good to go. You can adjust your predictions at any time up until kick-off at which point they are locked in, but games kicking off later/next day are still changeable.

We'll take scores from the 2nd round of games commencing 24th August. If you miss this deadline don't worry, you won't be far behind the leaders. If you enter predictions for round 1 - no problem, the mini-leagues differentiate between scores from global and mini-league performance so you will neither have an advantage nor be penalised.

Your scores for each round are automatically calculated sometime after each set of games - we've seen anything from 10 minutes to 8 hours. Those scores will be added [or subtracted] to your running total by the system and thereby used to calculate your global [everyone in the world] and mini-league rankings.

Be advised that when a round is in progress, you will have some access to the predictions of others in the mini-league and complete access to their performance after the round is over.

Banter occurs. You will encounter triumph and disaster and must treat those two imposters just the same. There will be a short report each week.

Tactical notes:

1.1.Make your predictions! This is the single most important thing. If you don't, the system may very well make automatic predictions for you. The system allows you to make predictions WAY ahead of schedule - so if you think you might miss a week, or it's a period when there are multiple rounds in a short space of time [e.g. Christmas, Easter] then you can enter scores weeks and even months in advance. If you think you will only be popping by occasionally, you could enter a few weeks at a time.

2.2.Always place your Insurance chip! It can't harm you points wise and may save a significant negative score.

3.3.Relative scores matter more than absolute scores! Some weeks you'll score 200 and be average, others you'll score 20 and beat everyone else. The scoring system makes low and negative scores very easy to achieve.

4.4.It is very possible to have runs of good and bad form. If the latter happens to you in the first couple of weeks and you are way behind, don't worry - this is a marathon and not a sprint. You'll learn and improve quickly.

5.5.Be careful with your Banker chip! It doubles or triples the points for that game, meaning you could score +90 [30x3] plus any Banker Bonus for a perfect prediction down to -30 [-10x3]. That is quite a swing. Opinions differ on optimum Banker chip strategy. A certain proportion of the cohort sometimes like to cover the same game with the Banker and Insurance chip simultaneously, meaning that the big penalty is avoided [min=0] and a potential big [eg a x3 rather than a x2] score can be selected with some security. I do not agree with this strategy. I have two reasons:

a.The bonus for consecutive accurate predictions [up to +20] is ALSO being risked when the Banker chip is in play, even if the Insurance is covering. The potential value of that cumulative bonus can be quite considerable. But more importantly;

b.A Gentleman doesn't play that way.

6.    6.If the above made your eyes glaze over, here is my strategy. Place your Banker only on a result you are the most sure of in a set or not at all.

Good luck!

Mignolet made one good save, I'll give him credit. But he's looked weaker than Reina did in the air and has flapped a lot of chances that he should, and had in the past, gotten a good fist to.

Lots of people in this summer for Norwich and Holt has gone. He's hopeing RvW is almost as good as RvP. Plus i put a sneeky £1 on Norwich topping the table after the first round of matches. Come on you yellows.

It's not Holt's goals we are going to miss, its his assists that were key last season. In 12/13 he only scored 8 goals but was instimental in most of the others scored when he played.

As a replacement its Ricky van Wolfswinkel that looks the best of the bunch but the key players will be the new midfielders. Without a good supply of balls even the best forwards can't score many goals. I think we won't go down this year as yet again i think there are much worse clubs than ours.

I'm glad we have Everton as a first game. It will take Martinez time to get his team playing his way so Everton won't be the solid unit they were under Moyes.

2013-08-17 09:01:38 AM

HaywoodJablonski: What are the odds Altidore scores 15-20 goals for Sunderland?

I think they would be pretty long.  I think a realistic goal would be for him to net 10.  15-20 would put him in the top 5-7 strikers in the league and I think that would be a bit unrealistic.

Ten players managed 15+ EPL goals last season, so I'd say the odds were long.

If he gets 10 or more, that would be really good. Can't see him getting more than a dozen to be honest.

http://worldsoccertalk.com/2013/08/15/where-to-find-premier-league-e xt ra-time-on-your-cable-or-satellite-system/

Now to watch Everton/Norwich in what should be a very exciting game, or to watch Jozy's first match as Sunderland go to Fulham.  Hmm...

Of course my cable company isn't listed.  ah well, I can just stream it and watch online

Suarez scored 35 goals the year before switching from a Dutch to English side, where he scored 11. Altidore scored 31 goals for a Dutch side last year. So the calls for 10 goals are reasonable

Jumping in, last year we had talked about a prize for whoever had the best record in the Predictions league, but for all the talk, there wasn't any follow-through. If you guys want, I'll act as the impartial intermediary to guarantee the prize and collect the money if everybody agrees. It'll be an honor system, still, but I'll put my name on the line to make sure it happens for you guys.

I woke up a little late and caught the replays; both keepers were making some DAMN lovely saves.

2013-08-17 09:55:41 AM
I had my annual pre-season wall of text written, but then I read it back and realised it was crap (and when even I think my own stuff is crap...). So I deleted most of it. Just wanted to say this:

One of the issues raised about Moyes is that he has a poor away record against the top teams. This misses the point on two counts. Firstly, Sir Alex didn't have a great record against the top teams (lost three of the last four against City since they became good, lost regularly at Anfield (and the occasional 1-4 at home), and had a horrendous record at Stamford Bridge since Abramovich became manager). Despite this, Sir still managed to be quite successful. And secondly, only United (5) and City (6) lost fewer games than Everton (7) last season, yet the Toffees finished 6th, 26 points behind the champions. An inability to consistently beat the likes of Southampton, Fulham and Aston Villa will cost United more than an inability to win away at City, Liverpool and Chelsea. It is that killer instinct that I think Moyes lacks. I'll be delighted if he proves me wrong.

It was fun while it lasted, but third is the new first.

Couple of other things:

Stoke offering free travel to away fans for the season is commendable. And undoubtedly frowned upon by lots of other PL clubs.

The Coventry situation is disgusting.

Sunderland are well on top of Fulham, but haven't found a way through yet.  Fulham have put both centerbacks on Jozy since he is up top alone and have taken him mostly out of the match.  I think if Sunderland go to 2 strikers it would open things up a bit more.  Sunderland's midfield looks pretty good though.

Were your predictions still there?  Basically until the match happens you can change your scores and hit submit.  The submit button never goes away until the last match is played.  Those that have started are finalized so that you can't change them, but the rest are left alone with the submit button is there.  As long as you load the page and scores are there, your scores are saved in the system.

You can always do scores in advance and actually put numbers in through week 38, but can change them all the way up until the match starts.

Greg Howard at Deadspin said it best:

A couple of months ago, I was in my apartment and had to take a shiat. So I did; it was wet. As soon as I started, though, I realized there was no toilet paper. I'd recently bought a huge pack, but I have two roommates, and one has a girlfriend who's over a lot, so we run through the paper pretty quickly. I looked in the closet, and of course there was no toilet paper there, either. That's because my other roommate is passive-aggressive, and doesn't like me that much, and so even though he's a neat freak, he fights through his borderline OCD to make life harder for me in the apartment. Washes only his dishes even though everyone washes his, doesn't take out the trash much even though he cooks every night, and so on. You know him, even if you don't know him. So I waddled down to the bodega on the corner, to buy some toilet paper. My ass was clenched, but I was still petrified. I've got a sensitive bum, so I bought the good toilet paper. Charmin. One roll, because now I'm feeling passive-aggressive. It was like three bucks.

I spent more money on that roll of toilet paper than Arsenal have in the transfer market all summer.

Arsenal fans could live with that if the team was great. But Arsenal aren't a great team. They finished fourth last year, after a historic unbeaten streak, to overtake their hated rivals Tottenham and qualify for the Champions League. This summer, manager Arsène Wenger and Arsenal's front office claimed to have over £70 million in the bank to spend on strengthening the squad. They've offloaded no less than 22 players, and so far, have only signed one, Yaya Sanogo. He was free. He wasn't even supposed to see much time this year, but he likely will.

Gunners have a dangerously thin, dangerously mediocre team. They have for years, but we think this year is finally the breaking point, when they'll be passed over for a Champions League spot and heads will roll. They've been linked with farking everyone, and haven't been able to sign a single great player yet. If they don't add real quality in the next two weeks, Arsenal are done. That said, look for winger Theo Walcott and Olivier Giroud to both score 15 or more goals this season. It still won't be enough.

As a Real fan who's goddamn tired of seeing them buy people who they bench (nope, I don't want Bale, if you're asking, we already have a midfield logjam) , it's quite bewildering to see the flip-side: a team who links itself to everyone yet buys no one.
They really need to have a guy to tell Wenger that it's fine to only link to a few people, but to try his damnedest to buy them, not link to everyone that passes by and end up empty.

The thing that gets me is:  They agree to personal terms with Higuain...but say nothing to Real.  No.  thing.  Then Real let Higuain go to Napoli for a price that's less than Arsenal are willing to pay for Suarez.

Ridiculous; Wenger has to go now.

Pretty much, Adubs86. Arsenal boasted of a large warchest at the beginning of the summer, then couldn't close any of the deals. Not one. Arsene seems to believe that Arsenal is still as respected today as they were 10 years ago, when they were a top, top team. That hasn't been the case for several years now. Arsenal will have to overspend on top players until they have recent silverware to point to. Because players don't consider Arsenal to be title contenders. And they're right.

Pretty much this. I think Wenger's still trying to ride the success they had with Henry to make players join, when he doesn't have a single recent trophy to point to.

Champions League football can only do so much to attract people when you aren't even sure you can come back next year and you're pretty sure you won't get far in the CL anyway.

Arsenal need another Dein. Somebody to handle transfers. Wenger may be smart, but he's apparently not smart enough to evolve with the game. IT.HAS.CHANGED. You can't expect to pilfer league one and come up with an Henry every 2 years. It's just not happening. If Arsenal piss about and let Ox, Wilshere, etc get fed up and leave, Wenger will have destroyed his legacy whilst wasting 10 years+ of Arsenal fan's time and money. Something has to give this year, and I hope it's Kroenke out, Stan in, Wenger out, a new hungry coach in.

Xlr8urfark: Arsenal need another Dein.

I don't dislike Wenger as a coach, but he sucks at transfers. I don't see Dein returning, so hopefully Arsenal finds a negotiator. Let Arsene give the guy a list of players he wants and set the negotiator loose with a checkbook.

I'd rather listen to Arlo White spend twenty minutes reading from a phone book than hear Gus Johnson excitedly mispronounce someone's name.

The wheelie bin may be out of action by then.  Load Arsene and the stale chips in and wheel him away from Arsenal.   Ideally as soon as can be done.

http://www.theguardian.com/football/2013/aug/17/arsene-wenger-arsena l- aston-villa

I said a similar thing upthread, but it comes down to a few factors:

1) Wenger misjudging Arsenal's much lowered standing in the footballing world and assuming that Arsenal is a top destination for ambitious players.

2) Wenger's unrealistic valuations of how much players are worth in relation to the current market. I think he's been expecting FFFP to force teams to sell high-priced players to meet those obligations, but it hasn't happened. And the prices have not gone down.

There are some other factors at play, too (Wenger's lack of concern about not having new players and overconfidence in the team's abilities, among others), but really, I'd chalk it up to the first two.

Nope, don't feel bad for him at all. It's one thing to leave a lower league or non-CL club for a CL club, it's another to take the money and run, and that's what he did. Tough shiat Radamel, you had it good at Atletico and you wasted it for the paycheck.

According to Marca, it's both.

Monaco's tax law changed AND because of that, the owner of Monaco hasn't dished out his wallet as hard. Once again, hard to feel sorry for him. He went full mercenary on that decision, time to stand by it.

Unlucky but good showing from Palace. They look a side that might steal a few from some top-half sides.
The support is massive, still singing even after the game in done at to voice. Pleasant to hear.

I have BA, Matta, and hazard with Matta as my captain and BA as my vice captain. I took three Chelsea players because they get 2 matches this game week so it's an easy way to double up on points...if your players play that is.

Left for a while, amazed to find it's still 2-0. This is why I hate Mourinho's teams, as soon as he's winning he just coasts to the end. The best game I saw Madrid play with him at the helm was when Casillas got ejected at the very start, since he never got to make the team slow down.

I have to say, I could get used to a constant firehose of soccer. Though I'd really like it if FIFA made their own channel, like MLB Network and NFL Network, and then they could air any random game from any random league they couldn't otherwise sell to an international audience. Stick a Russian league match on there one day, air a Nigerian game the next day, a Malaysian game the next, a Paraguayan game the next, you get the idea.

It's the wise thing to do, as Arsenal will fall apart just as you think they've finally figured it out.

I can say that I've watch some of every single match this weekend. Sure, I watched maybe 5 minutes West Brom-Southhampton; but it's still more than I would've been able to see of it in the past. It is awesome that we're getting this much of the EPL now.

Yes, NBC has had hiccups (which are to be expected on opening weekend). And yes, Arlo White may be trying a bit too hard at times. But generally speaking, the coverage has been superb. There's no criticism that I have that isn't fixable without sacking someone. It's not often that you can say that about US sports TV.

The rule of thumb last year was never bet against West Brom and never put your banker on Arsnal. Of all they "top" teams they blew it more times than an evening at G.A.Y.

We don't get that channel here, but I'm talking just a catch-all channel for all the smaller leagues no other network would buy. Nobody in their right mind is going to buy the rights to the Kenyan league, or the Albanian league, or the Aruban league, but you have a FIFA Network, once in a while they could slap something up from those leagues if for no other reason than novelty. As an outsider to the Arsenal issue the problem is not the results on the days, its that Arsenal has been left behind. Man Utd, Man City and Chelsea have pushed on and have got better and better leaving Arsenal behind to make up the best of the rest. Arsenal are now not competing against Man U/C and Chelsea for the title they are competing against Spurs and Liverpool for the last Champions League place. If Man Utd managed to push on without a billionaire sugar daddy then why can't Arsenal?

United had the benefit of one of the greatest managers the footballing world has ever seen on their side, plus an international brand bigger than some Fortune 500 companies. They didn't need a billionaire sugar daddy. My post was more towards the people calling for Wenger's head after one match. They were the same one's calling for it after the 8-2, and he still got them into CL. I'm not saying the man's perfect, he isn't, but this loss isn't the end of the world, nor is his lack of movement so far in the window cause for panic. Concern, yes, but not panic.

Man Utd offered £28 million to Everton for Marouane Fellaini and Leighton Baines but Everton rejected it as "derisory and insulting."

As a Liverpool fan, I can be neutral on this as I hate both clubs: Everton should hold on to them unless Utd offers almost double that number for those two combined. Drop those two and Everton will be fighting for a mid-table spot instead of a Europa League spot.

I have that living in Central Europe, but zero EPL without paying for Sky. 4-5 channels consistently with a match on. This weekend I caught the Ajax-Feyenoord derby and a smattering of Bundesliga. If this is really what you want, everything is on firstrow, all they way down to 2. Bundesliga and the Hungarian league.

But then again, I'll watch any derby.

I read that today about Arsenal, but I don't think Swansea will sell. They brought in Bony to compliment Michu and take the workload off his shoulders, why go back to a single (consistent) striker when you can have two that fit your style?

On paper at least Newcastle has an alright team. If they can stay relatively healthy unlike last year they shouldn't even flirt with relegation this time around.

Of course, I'm not sure if we even bother calling them Newcastle anymore. They're basically "French National Team 'B' squad" at this point.

And when he did MLS for NBC, the analyst was between the benches (stealing from NBC's NHL coverage and in both cases, it's stupid). But he's good. He just needs time to get comfortable.

Cabaye not in the squad today after the bud from arsenal. If we sell him and don't use the money for a striker or a winger it's going to be a long season. Realistically I wouldn't be too upset if he left because central mid is really the only position we have depth at the moment but that money has to go somewhere besides Ashley's pocket.

Martin Tyler commentating for NBC, awesome.  Dzeko almost gets my fantasy on the board after 4 minutes, but is denied by a great save from Krul.

You knew that was coming. City have been buzzing since the start.

Points for me as my vice captain in fantasy, david silva scores after 6 minutes.

There it is.
1-0 City
A David Silva header, there's a collector's item.
Toon, how on earth do you give the smallest guy on the pitch a free header?
