...like you've never seen before

Egads, those are horrid.  I'd prefer to think of my irises (irii?) as solid glassy structures, not as weird folds of skin that look like weird alien anal-vaginas, thank you very much.

2013-08-17 01:20:27 AM
That was interesting.  There is clearly varying construction of the iris.  I wonder how that translates to function?

2013-08-17 01:26:11 AM
Okay, for once I can say those were the coolest photos of anything I've seen all day.

Don't get me wrong. They're cool pics. Just pointed out that headline said like you've never seen before. It's kind of hard to confidently make that claim when they're a year old.

When will people realize we're just organically built robots? But built for what purpose...

It's like staring into the anus ... OF HELL....

how could something so beautiful and complex just "evolve"? i mean really!

Just more evidence of an infalliable God's grand design.

Now where *did* i put my reading glasses

I don't think these are real. If the iris had such complex macro-structures we'd be able to see them with...well, the naked eye. These are not especially large images. Plus, the iris isn't displaying any of its usual shimmer or irridescence. The lighting is impossibly flat.

And then there's this:

twistedsifter.files.wordpress.com

Why does the inside of the eye, filled with liquid, look conveniently like dry vinyl complete with specular shine?

Maybe you have superhuman eyes that stay perfectly focused at millimeter ranges, but for most ordinary humans that's not the case. The average eye starts to lose focus around one or two centimeters from the subject. It would be impossible to see this level of detail without a mechanical aid.

As for the textured pupil, yeah that was a bit odd. I'm having a difficult time believing that wasn't doctored, and if it was, what about the rest of them?

2013-08-17 09:05:54 AM
Sauron?

2013-08-17 09:08:21 AM
Okay, that's actually very awesome. I loved how the blue eyes variated in color. My daughter has blue eyes, but the center of them are quite green. It's been worrying here that she has different colored eyes that the rest of us. She's 4, though.

I'd love to see an extreme close up video of the iris as the pupil dilates and constricts.

Because that's the lens of the eye, the liquid goo is behind that.

That's what I'm saying. I don't think these are 100% fake, but there's evidence that some of the details are at least being exaggerated, if not outright manufactured. I think the thickness of the iris is being over-represented to show structural detail that you'd otherwise need to dissect the eye and blow the slices up to huge size to see.

Mine, click for big. Thats as close as i could get, the macro mode on my camera is awesome, but no ring flash.

Strange to think that we only see what light enters those tiny black pupils.

2013-08-17 09:50:34 AM
They look this way because the photographer is using oblique lighting to highlight the texture. Shine a bright light at it from the side, and your eye can look just like this.

Also, making optical systems out of meat is really, really gross.

No matter how many times I see this (I Farking Love Science likes to post it every so often), it never gets any less awesome. Sincerely inspiring awe.

Thanks, subs for the happy reminder that we are weird, gross, and kind of pretty.

I agree; absolutely the worst.  I just read a story about a guy who killed his own mother and wore her intestines like a feather boa.  That was amateur hour compared to what phlegmmo just did.

The only thing worse than a man who would kill his mother and wear her intestines is someone on the internet who tries to teach perspective in a completely unrelated way to someone who was making a simple and not unreasonable complaint.

/see what I did there?

I didn't look at them all, I'm an optometrist and see this stuff daily through the slit lamp. None of them look doctored n the least to me. Its amazing how different the eye looks when you alter the light path. That's why the light on the slit lamp swings, since some details are only visible under certain light conditions.

I wish you would have stated your point rather than ask me a question.  I can't be sure if I'm addressing your concern but I'll try to work with what you've given me:

No, I wouldn't answer with a non-sequitar.  But if someone expresses their displease in food prices with a hyperbole, maybe something like, "Increasing food prices are the worst thing in the world", I might put together a nice little hyperbole of my own.  I might say, "Well, not as bad as the genocide of hundreds of kids in Africa."  Because.....well.....it isn't. It's one of many examples, in fact.  Or, I might choose to couch that sentiment in sarcasm.  Maybe something like, "You're right.  I would prefer genocide over a five-dollar banana."

I honestly don't know of phleggmo has a reputation of being a troll or not but if the headline says "You have never seen X"  It's pretty reasonable to point at that X has been floating around for at least a year.  Odds are, at least someone has seen it.

P.S.  I can't believe that I'm internet swashbuckling foes on multiple fronts on a Saturday morning.  What am I doing with my life?  Ah well, carry on.  I've got about an hour before I have to do anything productive so I'll entertain all comers until then.

You're right.  the example I gave in the post you just quoted is essentially what I did in my Boobies.  I think we're on the same page now.  Shall we head over to Bed Bath and Beyond and pick out sheets?

Of course an internet cop isn't worse that a murderer...no one needs that pointed out.

I'm generally a smart ass and occasionally pedantic, but, no, not a troll.  Never saw the appeal in that.
