So apt, DanZero!  Me too -- swore I'd never go there.

After reading the derptastic posts of my family, I usually come away with a sad, because I am related to these morans.

I just spent the last couple of days running wire at Facebook's NC server farm. While not a big fan of the service, holy crap everyone there was really nice and the food alone makes me want to work there.

If you ever get sad or envious because it seems like someone else has an awesome life due to their facebook posts, consider this:
That someone else is so emotionally needy and insecure that they have to, have to, have to brag about it to the entire world to make it worthwhile.

2013-08-16 05:30:24 PM
Turn it off, it's not mandatory.
I remember a time before the internet, we managed fine, people had friends and there were funny pictures.

I don't think so, but then again, I use Facebook to supplement my real social life.

2013-08-16 05:31:41 PM
They see the pictures of themselves they've posted, then look in the mirror and get depressed. Duh.

2013-08-16 05:34:02 PM
I can say I don't get envious on Facebook, because my friends on there are either ranting about or cooing over their Cznoflayke or ranting about or cooing over guns.

I do, however, get hella envious looking at Houzz.

I've been off facebook for 3 years now. I have thousands of photos to upload, thousands of status updates to catch up on, and billions of Zynga invites to throw out.

Instead of finding out what friends are doing on facebook, I call them. Instead of playing the inane games, I read a book. Most times, especially in the summer, I'm out and about all day and most the night.

2013-08-16 05:36:09 PM
Thankfully I don't have to worry about family or anything like that on Facebook. My feed is what I want it to be. Some politics, humor, sports, music, and sex. I had some real life friends go full derp during the last election and I just simply deleted them and told them why. Being upfront about controlling the content that you want to see helps avoid any awkward scenarios. I also let them know what to expect from the things that I post because I respect that it may not be what they want to see.  Last, it's just Facebook. If all else fails...

YoOjo: Turn it off, it's not mandatory.

I go on Facebook to be a total azzhole.

Makes me feel great.

2013-08-16 05:45:50 PM
I used to check it regularly but now?  Idiots complaining about crap, or ads.  Rarely do I see one single thing that interests me.  And I have 1500 people that I almost all know.

It's just.. hollow.  Picture quotes or idiot SomeEcards, or complaints.  All day long.

That's part of why I quit.

Anxiety over farking Facebook.
The last straw was when I logged in and my entire feed was ads.

2013-08-16 05:49:53 PM
Since i have to sit on the computer all day i have to find ways to entertain myself (hence, fark). Facebook is an efficient way to waste time. Think about it. You can either call up your psycho aunt and ask how her day was, and then hear her yap on for an hour --OR-- you can sit back with a bowl of popcorn and read her rants on facebook. Good job! You just saved yourself 57 minutes.

HST's Dead Carcass: Instead of finding out what friends are doing on facebook, I call them. Instead of playing the inane games, I read a book. Most times, especially in the summer, I'm out and about all day and most the night.

Because if you don't call your friends or read any books, it's Facebook's fault, not yours.

Also,

FACEBOOK → SETTINGS → APP SETTINGS → APPS → APPS YOU USE → OFF

I say this every Facebook thread.  You'll get no more Zynga invites or inane games or petitions.  At worst you'll se an ad for a game.  I think it also prevents you from logging onto other sites with your Facebook credentials.

I remember reading an article back in the day when they were trying to decide whether the term was "yuppies" or "yumpies". This woman complained that there was a time in her life when people at parties told jokes and laughed instead of talking about money and possessions.

I'm not sure whether her age group was just "growing up" at that time or whether it was an across the board change in America. I thought the Intratubes had managed to knock the homogeneity out of generations but maybe it knocked the generations out of homogeneity.

A new study finds that young adults feel less happy the more they log onto Facebook.

Parents should have them turn that shiat off and have them do yard work, housework, dishes, and laundry, etc. Kids have become lazy, self absorbed, whiny, candy asses

Same peoples boring shiat every damn day on facebook.

2013-08-16 05:58:01 PM
I realized recently that I'm a dick on Facebook. I only post when I'm traveling overseas or doing something incredibly interesting. The other 50 weeks per year I don't even log in.

Pretty thorough "study" texting people a few times a day.   I find Facebook has no effect on my mental well-being or happiness.

Regardless of the site, they're doing some cool stuff.  We work with them on the open compute project, developing open specs for more efficient hardware for cloud computing.

Meh. I spend about 20-30 minutes a day on FB just catching up with friends in distant places. I've never noticed that it made me feel sad or jealous. And my life is far from perfect.

If you're old enough, imagine 30 years ago. 1983. Better yet, 40 years ago.

An unknown man comes up to your door with a clip board. Dressed well, but dark shades. You can't really see him.

In a polite manner, he asks you if could ask you some personal questions.

You ask why?
He says, we're asking all of your neighbors these questions. "Everyone is doing it".

What's your REAL name (Absolutely required)
What's your address?
What's your phone number?
What's your email address?
Your birthday
Your sex
Where you live
Where you went to school
Where you work
Your hometown

Are you gay or straight?
Do you have children?

Tell me more about yourself
What are your hobbies?
What kind of music do you like?
What kind of books do you read?
What are your religious views?
What are your political views?

He gives you map to show him where you live.

He asks you for a current picture of yourself. Any pictures of yourself. He gives you a folder to put all of these pictures in. He's going to copy them, and return them.

Family pictures. Past and present. Give him all you have.

He gives you as many folders as you want to put all your pictures in. More the merrier.

Who are your friends? Who do you affiliate with? He wants pictures of them too.

Fun isn't it?

And it's free.

Before I go any further, why are you still talking to this man?

30-40 years ago, any responsible, cautious adult would have grabbed a baseball bat or golf club, and run this guy off his or her property and called the police.

There's a new man with a clip board now.

His name is Facebook.

Because everyone is doing it.

It's generally a good idea to permanently block all exes as soon as you create an account. And stalkers.

Facebook turned the computer into an exciting new way to keep up with the Joneses, with life experiences instead of TVs and washing machines.  People who don't care about that can use Facebook without feeling dejected, and people who do care about it would find a reason to get down without Facebook's assistance.

I use facebook for one thing only: for PM's to or from friends when I or they actually have something meaningful they want to say to me specifically.  Kind of like email in that respect, except that there are several friends of mine who I can contact on facebook but don't have their email.

Every time I open facebook, I immediately start punching myself in the face until it's closed. This way I can associate it with physical pain, instead of the emotional pain that facebook has caused me... seriously... every horrible thing that's happened to me, every major setback, every horrible relationship I've been in for the last 5 years or so, have all involved facebook.

needless to say, i don't go to facebook much anymore.

Most do. It's just that we're often driven by other priorities and eagerly overlook certain details. But the signs were there the whole time.

And that's assuming it's all true. I go out of my way to be self-deprecating in many Fark posts because when I actually do do something awesome, it's believable. No, I have not yet had that three-way with Gina Torres and Scarlett Johanssen, but I'm working on it.

I've never understood the idea of self-aggrandizing on the intertubes. Even if you actually do make 600k a year and are banging my mom, no one is going to believe you. So just keep yer trap shut and make some dick and fart jokes. Also, lolcats.
