You're not getting a new stadium anywhere in CA with public money. That ship has sailed. Maybe try Vegas, I here they are used to getting screwed.

How about no.

2013-08-16 10:12:29 AM
Are you kidding?  I'll bet dollars to doughnuts that L.A. would Love to have the Raiders back.

Wait, what year is this?

Wow... sure are lots of "could"s and "if"s in TFA... for something that is "inevitable".

2013-08-16 10:21:03 AM
So, we should be expecting the Raiders to bounce back and forth between LA and Oakland every couple of decades?

2013-08-16 10:27:28 AM
They can move, but they shouldn't be allowed to move back to LA.

LA cannot support an NFL team. This issue and the NFL's push to expand into Europe just seem like they keep beating the same dead horses.

London Raiders... I like it.

In order to let them move, they must be required to pay for the re-renovation of the Coliseum. Step 1: removing Mount Davis so fans can see the Oakland Hills again.

Whenever a North American sport talks expansion to Europe, it has to be the dumbest idea ever.  There aren't enough days in a week or hours in a day to make it possible.

Since football plays once per week it's pretty doable.

Not a such big difference between a east coast team flying to Europe or flying to California.

There would be a couple of times per year a team would have to make a really long flight, and they could arrange the schedule for those times to occur before or after a bye week to give the traveling team more time to adjust.

They could allow the European team more games in a row at home/on the road so there's not so much back and forth.

Really it would be pretty damn easy to do.

There are lots of reasons an NFL team in Europe won't happen. The flight time isn't one of them.

The tax situation and player recruitment are two reasons alone why it would never get off the ground.

Only because of the Raiders and that atrocity Al Davis built in Mount Davis. Completely ruined the stadium. Prior to that, it was actually a fairly good ballpark. Sigh....

I am pretty sure the stadium in LA is just a 3d construct on a computer someone in the NFL offices in New York which they pull out and show to the backwater hicks and politicians of a town, to better extort a new stadium on the tax payers dime.

Would you like to be some god forsaken heck hole that lost its nfl team? Because you could be if the Tennessee Titans Miami Dolphins Atlanta Falcons Oakland Raiders don't get a new stadium built.

As a regular person traveling, I think long flights suck. I can't imagine having to sit through one after playing a game then looking forward to a week of practice before you do it all over again.  Plus English food sucks...then again, maybe that's just me.

skinink: LA cannot support an NFL team.

They were supporting the Raiders.   They averaged 52k per game their last season there.     Al Davis had a weird personal fixation on getting out of LA Memorial Coloseum because it was a thousand years old, crumbling, provided no luxory box revenue and made even 50k crowds look sparse because it held 75k people.  He couldn't get anyone to fund a new stadium in LA for him.    Which were all valid reasons to move the team I suppose, had he not moved back into to a worse situation in Oakland and cut off his nose to spite his face.   But he was driven to go back to Oakland out of sentimentality and nostalgia, and there weren't many other options.

Yep, especially in London,  The UK taxes any non resident athlete's salary AND endorsement income.   It could work in a league with a billionaire owner who doesn't give a fark about having to outspend market rate to attract every player, but it would never working in the NFL with the hardest, most punitive salary cap in professional sports.

I know this has zero bearing on the thread, but I had to comment on this. I have the Jags/Dolphins game on in the background, and the Jags have, bar none, the worst offense I think I've seen. I watched every snap of the 2011 Colts season too. I know it's preseason, but I'm embarrassed for the players and fans pre-emptively for this season, even more than I normally am for the Jags.

I grew up rooting for the Los Angeles Raiders. You know, the last team that won a Super Bowl. Even though I don't live in LA anymore and have enjoyed myself a few games at the Oakland Coloseum I'm OK with them moving back to LA. It makes sense with the fan base that is still there.

The problem is still where do they put a stadium that won't be a total PITA to get to in LA? I love the Memorial Coloseum but it isn't a good fit in today's luxury stadium atmosphere and traffic is a nightmare. If you put it way out in San Bernardino County it isn't really LA anymore and it's too damn far for most people to want to make that drive. Is there room in Chavez Ravine next to Dodger Stadium?

Come on, now....it's not all Al Davis' fault here. Lew Wolfe deserves a huge chunk of the blame if the Raiders move. There would have been a new set of stadiums for the Raiders and the A's finished by now along the waterfront if Wolfe weren't the second biggest douche in the MLB next to Bud Selig.

If they restructured that giant parking lot into a series of garages, yes. However, I think the Dodgers own that whole plot of land, and I'd doubt they'd sell any part of it for cheap.

The Coliseum held 85,000 for football in those days.

I'm tired of this "El Lay can't support an NFL team" bullshiat. I give you the two owners who tried to extort stadiums out of the taxpayers here:

First off, the Mobbed-Up Prostitute Lounge Singer:

cdn.ph.upi.com

Tried to extort a new stadium out of the City of Los Angeles > moved to Anaheim, ruining a great baseball stadium by turning it in to horrible baseball AND football stadium > drove away their star RB, Eric Dickerson > St. Louis!

Then there's this homunculus:

themadchuck.files.wordpress.com

Tried to extort stadiums out of Los Angeles, Inglewood (at Hollywood Park) and actually got the bumpkins out in Irwindale to hand him $10 milllion before he buggered off back to that shiathole in the East Bay.

AEG tried to extort a stadium out of the city in the early 2000's but Joel Wachs said "not a penny for billionaires" > the project was dead within days. I did some temp work for AEG, I saw the stadium model in a conference room, just thrown in to a corner with files and boxes, that's how much they cared.

No taxpayer money for billionaires. Period.

And the new stadium down the road from the Raiders offered them a share in the venue.  The 9ers and Raiders in the same stadium like the Giants and Jets.  But the Raiders and their fans said "No thanks."  So go, who needs you.

2013-08-16 06:35:00 PM
A few things...

Well if they won't leave it just won't be the same. The Steelers are my team and my Dad would tell me stories on how this was the biggest rivalry of the 1970s. The rivalry really wasn't there when the Raiders were in Los Angeles.

Never been to California but my Dad went on a business trip to San Francisco 20 years ago and told me SF was nice and glamorous and Oakland was a impoverished ghetto. Perhaps Oakland really does not have any money to keep the Raiders if it is still a poor area.

The only thing I will miss about the Raiders is the Black Hole. The fans amuse me with how they dress.
