Correlation is not causation.  This is the least scientific article I've read in a long time.

"Drinking more than 28 cups of coffee a week - about four per day"

Yes, there are 'about' seven days in a week.  Sometimes there are nine, but usually it's about seven.

Until I've had a nice piping hot coffee enema three times in a row every morning, I just feel out of sorts, and get the urge to force people into a slow-moving meat grinder, feet-first.

So I guess coffee's good for me.

To be fair, they said more than 28 cups is about four per day.

I call BS on this study. It is very weird that more than 4 cups of coffee per day is associated with a reduced life-span if you are under 55. but there is no effect if you are over 55. Did the authors do any sort of lifestyle control or calorie control? I can imagine that most people over 55 in the US started drinking coffee before Starbucks created coffees with the same calories as a meal. Did the authors of the study have any sort of controls? Correlation /= Causation.

Except for the part of the article that very clearly and explicitly says that this is a finding of correlation and that no one is saying that coffee is causing any of the deaths?

FTA:
Drinking more than 28 cups of coffee a week - about four per day - was linked to a 21% higher mortality rate in men and women of all ages, and a 50% higher mortality rate in people under 55 years old, according to a study of 40,000 people published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings.

To be fair, the mortality rate of other people would be much higher than 21% if I didn't have my morning coffee.

They could tell me, with unassailable proof, that coffee promotes hair loss, shrinks testicle size, lowers the IQ, and damages your credit rating and I'd still drink it.

You quit drinking and see what it does to your black coffee intake.

How the hell does anyone need four cups (or more!) per day?!?  I occasionally have a second cup with breakfast, but any more or any later in the day and I feel nasty.

/once drank about six cups to pull an all-nighter in undergrad - I can only assume the ensuing sensation was how being a crackhead feels like

The only advise I'll listen to is from my own doctor, who is familiar with my medical history and problems.

She sees no problem for me with a couple of cups of black coffee a day.

Besides, I would kill someone (probably one of the salesman at the company I've been working at) without that coffee... And no one wants that.

4 cups?!?
really?
there's usually a night or 2 per week i drink a friggin pot just in the hour or so before bed! i have a 16 oz tumbler i bring with me to work every morning, and a 10 oz mug here i usually fill up at least twice before lunchtime.
since i discovered a couple years ago that i actually like black coffee, i often substitute it for high-calorie drinks i may have previously enjoyed during those times. that, and i just generally have always loved coffee...got started at about 3 years old with what my grandmother calls "coffee milk"...at their house they'd be drinking coffee and i wanted it, so she'd mix a little coffee with my milk.

2013-08-16 07:57:40 AM
I daresay there is a strong correlation with heavy coffee drinkers and sedentary work requirements (i.e., people who go to an office and just sit there are prone to have a coffee I.V. more than people who are out and about).  Oh and look, over 55 would be getting close to going into retirement, which means they're no longer forced to be at a desk all morning every day.  And, desk jobs ARE proven to have a linkage to health issues of all types.

So, is it the coffee or sitting on your ass all day, fatty?

what about the runners who also drink coffee and smoke cigarettes? yes, there are plenty of those. i admire those folks, albeit my hatred of cigarettes prohibits me from fully emulating them, but i do "run" (i've had old ladies walk past me as i jog...not proud of that, but proud that even as a fatarse i do what i can) and i drink A LOOOOOOOOOTTTTT of coffee.

Never touch soda and I haven't had more than one coffee in the last six months, yet I've had a few migraines recently. Of course my mother gets migraines and they do say it is hereditary.

The disappointing thing is coffee doesn't give me any sort of a buzz/lift/energy boost the way it seems to for other folk. I could quite happily go straight to sleep after a cup of coffee. Hence why I don't bother drinking it much.

2013-08-16 08:22:24 AM
I prefer tea over coffee for the wake-up-in-the-morning feeling. Less caffeine -> less chance of the "midday crash" that will happen when you have too much caffeine in the morning.

I will still drink coffee in other times of the day if I brew it myself. Some places are worse offenders than others, but pretty much any cafe/doughnut store/deli/etc that sells coffee will sell you hot brownish watery crap. Yes, even Starbucks (though not as much of an extent as the worst offenders. Dunkin Donuts and McDonalds comes to mind).

Good thinking.  Now, just be a bit of an AW, and call a press conference.  You can claim coffee is harmless, and get next week's Fark story on coffee.  The combination of weak science and catastrophe-seeking journalism has done more to fark up the level of general knowledge and critical thinking in America than anything but the public school system.

I work with coffee drinkers, smokers, and runners.  The runners are the worst.  I dont give a shiat about your ultramarathons or how much time you spent running this weekend avoiding your family.

People who talk about the shiat they do too much are annoy whether it be coffee, smoking, or running.  Especially running.
