Probable low security federal prison camp where they send most non-violent white collar crooks?

Yeah, sure.  Whatever.

This! I remember in the 90s there was a local politician that got busted for corruption and he got time suspended and community service, but he got to keep his pension, medical and the use of a car from the county fleet.

eligible to receive $8,700 dollars per month in disability pay due to his bipolar condition

Seriously, where I do go to get a $8700 a month compensation for being diagnosed as bipolar?

Public Intoxication is a misdemeanor. The risks of one asshole cop ruining someone's whole life are too great, considering what we've seen cops do in some of these threads.

Also, until we come right out and admit that the criminal justice system is not for rehabilitation, we still have to give lip service to the idea of someone paying their debt to society.

Not that it happened in this case, but I can see where the lines get blurry. "I took some folks (read - friends) to dinner to discuss my policies, so that counts and I'll pay for it with my election fund credit card."

In what world would it ever seem remotely possible to buy a mink coat or an elk head?

He'll be using that to pay off the cost of locking him up, right?

"could" and "is eligible" are not the same as "will" and "is receiving".

I'll withhold my poutrage until I see he is actually getting $8700 a month for being bi-polar.

FTFA: "Ex-congressman Jackson is eligible to receive $8,700 dollars per month in disability pay due to his bipolar condition"

Wow. Bipolar citizens are eligible for about $700 per month. No wonder there are so many mentally ill people in the U.S. government, it's a smart survival tactic.

2013-08-15 02:04:41 PM

Holy crap. I make half that (before taxes).  I guess crime does pay. Those people know how to game the system.

Well, if the elk head was decoration for his office, and the mink coat was for his wife to wear to a searing in ceremony or rally in cold weather, they're arguably defensible.  But he's only barely in trouble for spending the money.  He's mostly in trouble for lying about it.

SSI keeps you at poverty.  SSD is what you get when you pay into the system and is based off your earnings.

Come on - he went and got "diagnosed" with this the minute he knew he was heading to prison so that he could collect disability.  Anyone who thinks otherwise is not paying attention.

I wish.  $883 a month, plus $41 in food stamps.   Extremely bad back; 5 surgeries to date, and several discs could blow at any time.

I'll likely never own another car, nor will I ever go on vacation (that is, just going somewhere else, not necessarily a 5-star hotel and lobster every night).  If a big-ticket item breaks, I'll have to save for several months to get another, and I'm using what assets I have right now just to pay medical bills.

Shame on the author of the article.  Federal Govt SSI and Disability are stopped after the first month in prison.  Jesse Jr will receive benefits until he physically is in prison. The pension is another matter.
SS website: "We generally do not pay Social Security and Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipients during confinement for a crime in jail, prison or certain other public institutions." More info:

Is there precedent for this?  I can see that the idea is to prevent the kids from being uprooted as little as possible.  That makes a sort of sense.  But is this kind of thing done for paupers as well?  I don't know how many husband/wife criminal convictions actually exist.
