The five million Americans currently with Alzheimer's are only a quarter of the 15 million projected to have the disease in 2050.

I'm going with, They'll get old one day, too, only they're such self-absorbed little shiats that their kids won't be there to take care of them.

But there's only a 50/50 chance of that.

2013-08-14 06:38:56 PM
That's true, but what they should really be afraid is Alzheimer's.

2013-08-14 07:57:28 PM
Oh God, my grandfather has Alzheimer's so how does that affect ME and MY generation? Oh shiat!

2013-08-14 07:58:25 PM
They don't know anything anyway

2013-08-14 08:16:30 PM
For some reason, my mom pronounces it 'al-heimers' and it drives me nuts.

I'm asking for a friend: What generation are you called if you were born in '74?

2013-08-14 08:39:55 PM
Nevermind, I googled it. I guess I'm generation X.

No, you're thinking of the Baby Boomers.

Now get back inside Grandpa, you'll catch cold.

Millennials suck at math.  We've been on a downward slope since the 1950's, but they are taking it to a whole other level.  I sat through a work presentation last year and a young woman was presenting a plan for a pilot program that would involve 6 groups of 6 people each, but each slide referenced 56 total people.  Midway through it our CIO told her she had a typo for the total number of people (but that she could correct it later), and for the rest of the presentation whenever the "56 total people" came up, she would pause and then say "46 total people" and wink at the CIO.

I've never felt so bad for someone at work in my life.  There were only a few people in the presentation, but they were all higher up the food chain, and this was a shot at impressing them.  It didn't help that her manager had to use her phone's calculator program to eventually slip her the correct number on a piece of paper.

For the life of me, I have no idea what voodoo math she was using to come up with the numbers.  It's not like she was missing on multiples of 6, she was just out of the ballpark.

Good think Alzheimer's doesn't run in my family.  We all die of heart attacks due to morbid obesity long before Alzheimer's will kick in.

Here's my thing about Alzheimhers, from someone with no experience with it at all - it seems like a disease that is far, far worse on everyone who ISN'T the patient. I mean, if you have Alzheimers, do you even notice it? You just aren't aware, right? It's your family that is devastated, since you basically become a pod person.

It's gotta be terrifying for the patient - at least at first when they realize things are slipping away.  At some point, though, yes, there comes a point when their grasp of what's happening slips away and it becomes worse for the caregivers than the person with the disease.

You sound like somebody who has never had a family member suffer from the disease.

We moved in with my folks abut a month ago. During one of my grandmother's stays, she had a seizure, and as a result moved in with my mom, stepdad, me and my fiance. It's. . . Interesting. There are moments of amazing laughter, and moments of sheer despair, and moments of desperation you aren't sure how you'll get by.

2013-08-14 11:28:42 PM
Millennials? If I were a thousand years old, I'd worry about it as well.

Alzheimers sufferers in the early stages suffer from knowing their minds are diminishing. In the later stages, its disorientation and fear.

I've never been impressed with the editorial standards at the Huffington Post, but this crap written by a 19-year-old who evidently likes writing because he failed math is a new low.

My grampa has Alzheimer's and has been in a VA facility that specializes in Alzheimers/dementia patients for the last several years. It's a terrible condition, but he's in the most comfortable position he can be while he awaits death. I'm thankful that I'm a veteran too, so that I also can get into the cushy nursing home. My father, however, who was a draft-dodging hippie and is just starting to get "forgetful," is out of luck.

Honestly, once I'm no longer the person I am, I think I'd want to kill myself, or be euthanized. I have no wish for my loved ones to spend years caring for a shell, or to be remembered as that once I am gone.

What the fark do you do for a living?  I would fire a framer for that.  Not for shooting black tar, but for what you just described.
